Abstract

This paper endeavours to bring fresh insight into the role of African indigenous languages in the global campaign against environmental degradation. It examines how linguistic practises impact the natural environment. In this respect, the paper reports on the findings of an investigation that focused on the Econaming system in Kabarasi and Bukusu societies that sought to ascertain the role of Econames in mitigating ecological destruction. The rationale for this position is that such practices have the potential to mitigate the disruption of the ecosystem. Furthermore, the linguistic systems of the Bukusu and Kabarasi indigenous societies cherished different plants and animals by naming new-borns after them. By doing so the ecosystem earned a special place and was therefore venerated. The paper also aimed at comparing the meanings and representations associated with the Econaming systems in both Kabarasi and Bukusu naming systems. A combined method of data elicitation from Lubukusu-Lukabarasi and the native speaker’s intuition was used to collect data. Animal and plant Econames that relate to the environment were inferred for analysis. The indigenous Lubukusu and Lukabaras names were correlated with the associated ecosystems among native speakers of these languages. The analysis revealed that the meanings associated with the Econaming system among the Kabarasi and Bukusu is one of the strategies that can be employed to ensure more sustainable and acceptable environmental preservation measures.  The collected data revealed that indigenous language practices are found to be more appropriate and applicable in ecological preservation among the rural communities. The paper, therefore, recommends that the government and other policy-stakeholders should pay more attention to the Econaming practises so that local people's conservation practises are recognised to enhance global environmental conservation measures.

Abstract

The role of broadcasted advertisements is undeniably important for thecompanies to market their products. To convince the audience, advertisers have toconvey the persuasive message through the use of linguistic features. Those linguisticfeatures will influence the persuasion techniques used in advertisements and thepower relation which is built between the companies and the consumers.This study attempted to s olve two research problems related to the languagestyle of the utterances in Magnum advertisements. They were (1) What are thelinguistic features of Magnum advertisements? (2) What kind of power relation doesMagnum have upon consumers through the advertisements As an endeavor to solve those two problems, document analysis was employed in analyzing the transcript of the utterances in ten (10) Magnum advertisements. The first research problem was solved by categorizing the words or the sentencesinto some linguistic features of advertising language proposed by Grey (2008). Thesecond research problem was solved by interpreting the power relation in Magnumadvertisements based on Frenchs and Ravens theory (1959).From the obtained data, it was found that there were only a few linguisticfeatures which appeared in Magnum advertisements. The power relation betweenthe companies and the consumers could be defined easily because the utteranceswere clear enough. Furthermore, the simplicity of Magnum advertisements presentedMagnums special characteristics albeit the advertisers did not vary the languagestyle.

Abstract

This book provides a theoretically framed and empirically supported approach to support explicit learning (learning with awareness) in L2 development with a link to learning in the classroom setting. It approaches explicit L2 learning from five perspectives: theory, methodology, empirical work, model building, and pedagogy. It is theoretically based on mentalist or psycholinguistics SLA which posit that L2 development is more cognitive in nature. It also reviews studies which were motivated by cognitive accounts of SLA, more specifically studies on explicit L2 learning. It provides teachers with a model of L2 learning process in instructed SLA, and researchers with reviews on data elicitation procedures (online and offline) in SLA research. This book is written with novice teachers and researchers in mind, therefore it is both theoretical and practical in nature.

Abstract

The article is concerned with the concept of perspective in Cognitive Grammar and Communicative Dynamism. To the former, perspective is understood in the realm of cognitive concepts such as space, motion, locationality, directionality, importance, and focus ascribable to a particular sentence segment. To the latter, perspectiving is a matter of valuating, viz. assigning informational value to a sentence segment as a part of a distributional field of communicative dynamism. The two streams of thought evidently hold different constructs per-taining to the term perspective: conceptual-categorial on the one hand, and functional-informational on the other. However, the two seem to agree when perspectiving is concerned with the notion of importance and focus or rhematization.

Abstract

This study investigates how Sentence Master downloaded from Android can be used as a self-study media for students to promote Autonomous Learning to develop students comprehension on English sentence structure which is grammatically correct. Students can measure, by themselves, whether the material given during the teaching and learning process has been successfully learned. The result of this study is also intended to be used by the teachers and lecturers to indicate the successfulness of teaching and learning that have been conducted. This is an action research which 10 students of English Education Program of the University of PGRI Yogyakarta were employed as the objects of the research. They are tested to run the game of Sentence Master and the score will be recorded that benefits teacher to consider whether the learning process that has been conducted is successful. This study also investigates students difficulty on making English sentence. This study emerges results that Sentence Master helps students to understand English grammar better by employing the smart phone to promote Autonomous Learning. This media is used by the students as the indication whether they have the abilities to make good English sentences.

Abstract

This study reports types of imagined identities that pre-service foreign language teachers construct during their preparation of becoming teachers in a pre-service course named Micro Teaching. This course specifically facilitates pre-service teachers to implement some theories of teaching in the previous semesters into practice. Revealing what kinds of teachers they imagine in the future is believed to have greater impact on the pre-service teachers professional development (Chong Low, 2009). The researcher analyzed 19 pre-service teachers reflective journals to find out their imagined professional identities. The identities were then coded using the framework of imagined professional identity by Xu (2013) that fell into three categories: language expert, learning facilitator, and spiritual guide. The result showed that the three categories appeared in their reflective journals. However, the dominant imagined identity constructed throughout the semester was teachers as learning facilitators. It indicates that the pre-service teachers concept of teaching is shifted from the traditional concept which emphasizes teacher control into recognition of self-initiated learning.

Abstract

Recently, the use of ICT in todays English language teaching is quite massive. However, EFL instructors beliefs about the use of smart boards in language teaching practices are scarcely explored. This study aimed to investigate EFL instructors beliefs about the implementation of the smart board as ICT-based learning media. Three EFL instructors across English learning centers were voluntarily involved in this study. Observation and semi-structured interviews were employed as the data collection technique. The data were described and interpreted based on the research questions. The results of this study showed that EFL instructors had positive responses towards the implementation of the smartboard. They stated that the smartboard made the explanation clearer and it was not difficult to be operated. Besides, students enjoyed using the smartboard during the lesson. Finally, the EFL instructors agreed that the smartboard could be implemented in classrooms with high control or supervision by the teachers.

Abstract

The News Production Management Study Program (NPMSP) in STMM MMTC Yogyakarta is a study program that has an English subject in the third semester. Due to the lack of time and materials for the students, English, which they will use a lot in journalism, becomes their barrier in learning. Therefore, this research attempted to develop a set of English instructional materials using task-based learning for the third semester students of the NPMSP STMM MMTC Yogyakarta. This research aimed to answer how the materials are developed and what the materials look like. To gather the information, the researcher adopted Borg Galls (1986) Research and Development (RD) method which was combined with Kemps instructional design model (1977) covering eight flexible steps. Due to time and financial constraints, only five steps of RD were conducted in designing the materials. To gather the information, the researcher conducted some interviews. After designing the materials, the interview was conducted. The interview results showed that the designed materials were good, appropriate, and applicable. Nine suggestions were obtained to revise the materials which covered the level of difficulty of the text, the content of the exercises, the overview of the learning materials, teaching media, lesson plans, instructions, layout, and material implementation. The materials consist of six units. Each unit contains five sessions, namely Whats Up?, Entering the Newsroom, Journalists Project, Entering the News Editor Room, and Lesson Learned.

Abstract

Cognitive Grammar (CG) is a relatively new approach to linguistics that is becoming more mainstream in recent years due to its comprehensive description and meaningful elaboration of grammar. CG proponents have been proposing this approach to L2 grammar instruction instead of a more traditional approach that relies heavily on rules. Our main interest is to investigate whether such approach is indeed beneficial to learners, particularly in the learning of English past tenses. Our goal in the current study is therefore to examine the relative effect of CG instruction on Indonesian EFL learners mastery of two past tenses, simple past and past perfect. These tenses were selected as our instructional targets since most common traditional explanation does not help learners differentiate and use them contextually (Jones Lock, 2011). Twenty-seven EFL learners studying at a senior high school in Jakarta participated in this quasi-experimental study. They were assigned to one experimental group receiving a two-week pedagogical treatment with pre-test and immediate post-test design. Statistical analyses indicate that the group significantly performed better after the treatment, notably in discourse-related test sections. The results confirm the efficacy of CG which can lend support to its applications in L2 instruction.

Abstract

One of the important factors that influence the language learning, especially learning the basic rule of a language, is motivation. Many studies have tried to find out the correlation between motivation and self-regulation with the students' academic performance and they find out that both motivation and learning language are correlated so much. Thus, this paper specifically tried to find out the role of students motivational self-regulation with the students learning strategy. This research employed quantitative approach by employing survey method using observation sheet, questionnaire, and interview on some participants. The results of this study showed that the students motivation was high but they cannot self-regulate themselves.
