Abstract

Language is an essential mean of communication in teaching and learning activities. Specifically, in the English Language Education Study Program (ELESP) that employs English as the main instructional language for teaching and learning activities. Considering that English was not students’ first language, some lecturers employed code switching to help third-semester students in learning English. With regard to this phenomenon, this study addressed two research questions. First, what the types of code switching ELESP lecturers employ in their instructional languages are and second, what the reasons for ELESP lecturers to employ code switching in their instructional languages are. This study belonged to a basic interpretative study. It employed interview guidelines to understand the experiences of the lecturers who employed code switching. The results of this study showed that the lecturers employed both situational and metaphorical code switching. In addition, the writer found that the participants of the study code-switched for the reasons which can be classified into topic, addressee, emphasis, persuasion, solidarity, affection, nature of the subject and strategy. The results of the study also revealed that the use of code switching in lecturers’ instructional languages was mainly for the students’ understanding. DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/llt.2016.190105

Abstract

Teachers’ identity formation and tension in their working place have been the concern of many researchers and experts. However, the concern focuses only on the novice teachers who teach in the same subject as they are assigned to be. There is no sufficient research on identity tension which is faced specifically. This paper aims to find out the identity tension experienced by English language graduates teaching BIPA (Indonesian as a Foreign Language). This study employed a case study in order to generate a new understanding of this phenomena more deeply. Interview guideline with a semi-structured type of interview became the main instrument in this study. The participants of this study were five active Indonesian as foreign language teachers of Lembaga Bahasa Universitas Sanata Dharma. The study found out that teachers’ situatedness* became the main issue that influences teachers’ identity, compared to teachers’ multifaceted nature and their college. This study shows that, although the participants have been teaching for more than two years, or more, they mostly considered themselves still as English teachers.DOI: 10.24071/ijiet.2020.040105

Abstract

English oral communication proficiency is one of the absolute needs of adult learners in entering the digital industrialization era 4.0, where opportunities and competitions are more massive. Several limitations that are implemented as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic have made it difficult for most adult learners to practice their English communication skill intensively. This community service program aims to provide adult learners with the opportunities to practice English speaking skill through an interactive webinar and online group discussions. The Society Speaking Club was conducted in four meetings with the topics of mental health, diversity, environment, and entrepreneurship. The topics were selected so as to allow participants to relate the discussions to their life more easily, as well as to be more aware about the recent issues. This community service program has benefited the participants in a way that they became more confident and fluent in communicating their ideas effectively. In addition, the participants admitted that they got new insights on the issues being discussed, and they were called into actions for maintaining mental health, promoting and respecting diversity, preserving the environment, and developing entrepreneurial skills.

Abstract

Abstract

This pandemic has forced Book Report classes which are based on Extensive Reading Principles to be conducted online. This condition makes lecturers and students unable to conduct activities that are designed predominantly for offline classes. Therefore, the writer had to make some adjustments to the online learning environment. This practice is not yet studied extensively, hence, this paper aims to find out students’ perceptions related to extensive reading practices and how the implementation helps them learn English by analyzing data from Google Form, interview results, and lecturer’s notes and observation. The participants of this study are twenty-six students from Book Report D. The results of this study show students’ positive perception towards all activities in the class (ranging from 40.7% to 66.7% for each activity) and 96.3% of students considered they have positive progress from the beginning until the end of the class. These results show, that despite the challenges, educators should still apply extensive reading practices in their classes considering the benefits students could get from doing so.
