Abstract

The aims of this research are to what extent the implementation of fun English learning in enhancing students’ vocabulary and to find out students’ interest toward the implementation of Fun English Learning to the students at remote school at Limbong. The students are thought in indoor class and outdoor class by applying fun English learning. The researcher used experimental research design, which applies pretest and post-test. The researcher will use two instruments namely vocabulary test and interview. The population of this research is the students at SMP 1 Limbong. There are 98 students was taken from three classes that are class 7, 8, and 9. The researcher will choose the eighth grade students, which consists of 20 students as sample. The results of this research are; 1) the used of fun English learning in teaching vocabulary improved the students’ achievement, 2) the students are interest in learning English by applying fun English learning, Most of them gave positive responses.

Abstract

Register in Sociolinguistics is a form of language used for a special situation in a particular social setting, it also known as variety of language. In hotel industry, there are many kinds of English terms used by the staff both written and spoken. This study was designed to find out the English terms, the lexical meaning and the contextual meaning of the English special terms used by the staff of Front Office department in the Grand Clarion Hotel Makassar. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this study is the staff of Front Office department. The data were obtained through participant observation, semi-structured interview and review of the documents. The result of the study showed that the majority of terms used in Front Office department were in English. The researcher found that there were many kinds of the English terms used by the Front Office department in the Grand Clarion Hotel Makassar. In Front Office department, 85 (eighty five) English terms were found and 36 (thirty six) of them classified as the English special terms. English special terms have different meanings both lexical and contextual. These English terms in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is called register.

Abstract

This research is about the correlation of Parenting and Socioeconomic Status (SES) towards English Learning Readiness (ELR) of children. This study was aimed to find out the correlation of parenting quality and socioeconomic status towards English learning readiness of children. This research applied quantitative research, the case conducts in correlational research which describes an existing condition. The population of this research was students from all elementary school in Kecamatan Tamalate Makassar where English is tought at second grade. The representation of the population in this research is the 2nd year students of six elementary schools in Kecamatan Tamalate academic year of 2012/2013 who have collected the two questionnaires which is distributed to them and filled out by their parents. Total number of the sample is 105 students chosen from the questionnaires which is collected and has filled properly by parents. The data were obtained by using two kinds of instruments, those are questionnaires of parenting and socioeconomic status which have tested the validity in a number of students and data of the ELR of children got from student’s English achievement in school. Those data were analyzed by using path analysis of Amos 20.0. The researcher concludes that (1) the correlation of parenting with ELR indicates the higher quality of parenting they have the higher children gain ELR, on the contrary the less quality of parenting they have the less children gain ELR, (2) SES has almost none indication to have correlation with ELR, (3) The higher SES the better parenting do and the lower SES the worst parenting do.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the students’ language learning strategies used in mastering speaking skill by the students in mastering speaking skill. The researcher applied mixed method research, Qual-quan model. The Population of this research was the fourth semester students of English and Literature Department of UIN Alauddin Makassar. The Sample was the fourth semester students of English and Literature department, which consist of 15 students choosed randomly. This research used simple random sampling technique. This research applied think aloud and questionnaire as the instrument. The result of this study showed that students’ language learning strategies used in mastering speaking skill were (1) memorizing vocabularies and using picture categorized as memory strategies (2) listening to the music, watching English video, watching English movie, watching English TV program, listing difficult vocabularies, using dictionary, practicing, reading English text, speaking alone, repeating, guessing, doing conversation, repeating were categorized as cognitive strategies (3) Joining the club meeting and getting course, were categorized as metacognitive strategies (4) using similar word was categorized as compensation strategies. (5) Speaking with their friend and speaking alone or herself were categorized as social strategies and (6) discussing problem was categorized as affective strategies.

Abstract

This study is aimed to improve the reading comprehension of eleventh grade students at MAN 2 Model Makassar by using CIRC Method. CIRC Method is chosen to practice the communication in the target language. The research problems are: (1). Does the use of CIRC method improve reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of MAN 2 Model Makassar? (2). Are the students interested in teaching Narrative text through CIRC method of the eleventh grade students of MAN 2 Model Makassar? The objectives of the research were (1) to find out whether or not the use of CIRC method can improve reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of MAN 2 Model Makassar. (2) to find out the students’ interest toward teaching Narrative text through CIRC method. The research applied Quasi-experimental Design. The population of the research was the Eleventh Grade students of MAN 2 Model Makassar in academic year 2013/2014. The sample was IPS 2 as Experimental Group consisting of 33 students and IPA 2 as Control Group consisting of 37 students, with the total sample 70 students. The researcher used Cluster Random Sampling, two classes of the eleventh grade of MAN 2 Model Makassar were took as the experimental class and the control class. The experimental class taught by using CIRC Method while the control class taught by conventional learning method. The data were collected through reading tests namely Pre test and Post test, that were analyzed by using SPSS 20.0 version. The result of the data showed that there was significant difference between the students’ score who were taught CIRC method and non CIRC method. It proven by the mean score of the experimental group that was higher than control group in the post test. The result of the test indicated that using CIRC method significantly improved the students’ reading comprehension. Then, the questionnaires were analyzed by using Likert Scale that showed the students were interested in learning English through CIRC Method. The findings of this study indicated that the implementation of CIRC Method has improved the students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out: (1) the types of code switching used by the English teacher (2) the dominant types of code switching used by the teacher and (3) the teacher’s perceptions toward the use of teachers’ code switching in English classroom at SMA I Malili. This research took one of the English teachers as the subject of the research and the data were gathered through observation, interview, and recorded by using video recorder and field notes. The data were then analyzed using discourse analysis. The result of analysis showed that (1) the teacher used three types of code switching, namely: intrasentential code switching, inter-sentential code switching, and tag switching; (2) the dominant types of code switching used was intrasentential code switching followed by inter sentential code switching and tag switching (3) the interviewed teacher responded positively toward the use of code switching by the English teacher in English classroom.

Abstract

Speaking is an important skill learned by English student although English covers four skills namely speaking, listening, speaking and writing. Speaking is the main bridge for the students to master English. Unfortunately the fact has shown that the students were quite difficult to improve their speaking skill because they were accustomed to use their native language language in their daily life than using English. The above facts signify that the lecturer should apply the techniques that can motivate students to speak and engage students in encouraging activities. One of the techniques that encourage students to speak is role play. Role play is the choice implemented by the researcher in improving the speaking skill of the first year students at ABA Balikpapan since using role play, the students can express their idea, opinion, and feeling well in their performance without being worried to make mistake. Based on the result of the study, it can be concluded that the result of this research was satisfying. This research claims that it was successful in the effort in improving students’ English speaking skill through Role-Play. Role-Play activity could increase the students’ motivation in joining the teaching and learning activity. Their motivation is reflected in their efforts in preparing the Role-Play.

Abstract

This research is Effective in teaching narrative writing to the students of the sixth semester of English students of English Study Program of Cokroaminoto Palopo University. This research aims to find out whether the use of POW + W = 2, H = 2 strategy efficacious to improve the students’ ability in writing of the sixth semester English department students of Cokroaminoto Palopo University. This research used a pre-experimental design. The population of this research was the sixth semester students of English department of Cokroaminoto University Palopo. The sample of this research was the sixth semester students where the total sample is 30 students. This research used cluster random sampling technique. The research data were collected by using instruments namely narrative text. Data on the students’ writing skill were analyzed by using descriptive and SPSS v.20 to find and analyzed the mean score, standar deviation and T-test. The results of the research that there is difference between pre-test and post-test, where the mean score of the pretest (74) is lower than the mean score of the post-test (86.58), It means that there is a significant improvement after treatment by using POW + WWW, W = 2, H = 2 as strategy in teaching short story writing. Therefore, The T-Test of the students’ writing in post-test was smaller than α (0.01 < 0.05), it can be concluded that using POW + WWW, W = 2, H = 2 is significance improving
The Implementation of ‘Comic Life’ Through Directed Reading Activities to Increase Students’ Reading Comprehension Suardi Suardi

Abstract

The research was conducted to know the effectiveness of the use of Comic Life through Directed Reading Activities to increase students’ reading comprehension. It covered students’ literal comprehension, interpretive comprehension and applied comprehension. And to find out the students’ interest in teaching reading comprehension toward the application of Comic Life through Directed Reading Activities to increase students’ reading comprehension. The research method employed was quasi experimental. This research was designed into two groups, namely experimental group and control group. Each group consisted of 32 students. The sample was chosen by applying cluster sampling technique. The researcher used multiple choice of reading test both in experimental and control groups. The data obtained through the test were analyzed by using inferential statistic through SPSS 16.0 program. The research findings showed that Comic Life through Directed Reading Activities gave higher contribution to the students’ reading comprehension. The mean score of pre- test of the experimental and control group was not significantly different. The mean score of post- test of the experimental group was higher than the control group (75.62 > 56.87). Besides, all the three level of comprehension improved after the treatment, the literal level got the highest improvement with 9.69 point. It was followed by interpretive level which got 21.25 point and applied level which got 42.19 point improvement. This led to the conclusion that the application of Comic Life through Directed Reading Activities increased the students’ reading comprehension. It means that the use of Comic Life through Directed Reading Activities in teaching reading is very effective to increase the students’ reading comprehension.
