MANUSKRIPTA is a scholarly journal published by the Indonesian Association for Nusantara manuscripts or Masyarakat Pernaskahan Nusantara (MANASSA) in collaboration with National Library of Indonesia. It focuses to publish research-based articles on the study of Indonesian and Southeast Asian (Nusantara) manuscripts. MANUSKRIPTA aims to preserve and explore the diversity of Nusantara manuscripts, and communicate their localities to the global academic discourse. The journal spirit is to provide students, researchers, scholars, librarians, collectors, and everyone who is interested in Nusantara manuscripts, information of current research on Nusantara manuscripts. We welcome contributions both in Bahasa and English relating to manuscript preservation or philological, codicological, and paleographical studies. All papers will be peer-reviewed to meet a highest standard of scholarship.

Abstract

The Kutika Manuscripts in the Bugis language found in the Kalimantan Islands are a track record of the knowledge and existence of the Buginese in the area. This text can be associated with the culture of massompe' or migrating among the people of South Sulawesi. This study opens a space for discussion about the concept of maritime culture of the Bugis tribe based on the Kutika script. This article uses philological studies for textual analysis on the manuscript of Kutika Ugi 'Sakke Rupa (KUSR) which comes from the collection of the Mulawarman Museum in East Kalimantan. This study analyzes how the environmental awareness of the Bugis community is based on a small aspect in the process before sailing which is called misengi élo'na lopié as the etiquette of communicating with boats. The results of this study reveal that the boat is associated with a soul and will. This finding is related to the Merleau-Ponty concept of body ontology regarding body intentionality. Overall, this research contributes to the scientific realm by not only introducing local knowledge found in ancient texts, but also elaborating philosophical values related to the way Bugis people read nature and the sea. --- Naskah Kutika berbahasa Bugis yang terdapat di Kepulauan Kalimantan merupakan rekam jejak pengetahuan dan keberadaan orang Bugis di daerah tersebut. Naskah ini dapat dikaitkan dengan budaya massompe’ atau merantau di kalangan masyarakat Sulawesi Selatan. Kajian ini membuka ruang diskusi tentang konsep budaya bahari suku Bugis berdasarkan naskah Kutika. Artikel ini menggunakan kajian filologi untuk analisis tekstual pada naskah Kutika Ugi 'Sakke Rupa (KUSR) yang berasal dari koleksi Museum Mulawarman di Kalimantan Timur. Penelitian ini menganalisis bagaimana kesadaran lingkungan masyarakat Bugis berdasarkan satu aspek kecil dalam proses sebelum berlayar yang disebut misengi élo'na lopié sebagai etika berkomunikasi dengan perahu. Hasil dari penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa perahu diasosiasikan memiliki jiwa dan kehendak. Temuan ini dikaitkan dengan konsep ontologi tubuh Merleau-Ponty mengenai intensionalitas tubuh. Secara keseluruhan, penelitian ini berkontribusi dalam ranah ilmiah yang tidak sekadar memperkenalkan pengetahuan lokal yang terdapat di dalam naskah kuno, melainkan juga menguraikan nilai-nilai filosofis yang berhubungan dengan cara manusia Bugis membaca alam dan laut.

Abstract

This article discusses the problems of internalizing moral values ​​in the Malay literary work entitled Hikayat Nakhoda Asyik. As an old literary work, the text written in the Jawi script using the Betawi Malay language and became a guide for the development of character in the past, became the uniqueness and novelty of this literary work. The aim of this research is to portray the internalization of cultural values ​​and moral values in Hikayat Nakhoda Asyik. This study employed a perspective-based philological discourse analysis approach to obtaining a complete description of the texts written in Jawi script using Betawi Malay. The findings show that Hikayat Nakhoda Asyik contains moral values ​which are categorized into three parts, namely characters towards God who is the creator of the universe; second, manners to human beings; and third, manners to the environment. Hence, the duty of human being as a khalīfah fī al-ard (leader on earth) becomes harmonious and mercy to the universe. -- Artikel ini membahas masalah internalisasi nilai-nilai budi pekerti dalam karya sastra melayu Hikayat Nakhoda Asyik. Sebagai karya sastra lama, teks manuskrip ini yang ditulis dengan aksara jawi dengan pemakaian bahasa Melayu Betawi ini menjadi pedoman pengembangan budi pekerti di masa lampau, ini kemudian yang menjadi keunikan tersendiri terhadap karya sastra ini. Adapun tujuan penelitian ini yaitu, mendeskripsikan internalisasi nilai budaya dalam Hikayat Nakhoda Asyik dan mendeskripsikan internalisasi nilai-nilai budi pekerti dalam teks. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan analisis teks menggunakan perspektif filologi untuk mendapatkan gambaran secara utuh terhadap isi teks yang ditulis dengan aksara jawi dengan pemakaian bahasa Melayu Betawi. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwasanya Hikayat Nakhoda Asyik mengandung nilai-nilai budi pekerti yang dikelompokkan menjadi tiga bagian yaitu budi pekerti kepada Tuhan yang maha pencipta sekalian alam; kedua, budi pekerti kepada sesama manusia; dan ketiga, budi pekerti kepada alam sekitar. Dengan demikian trias panca kehidupan manusia sebagai khalīfah fī al-ard (pemipin di muka bumi) menjadi harmonis dan menjadi rahmat bagi semesta.

Abstract

Text editions of traditional medicinal texts resulting from research by philologists have not been widely used as an alternative to body care products, particularly natural bath soap. Two of them are manuscripts of traditional medicine from the collection of the National Library of Indonesia entitled Usada (code KBG 357) and Tetamba Jampi (code BR 55). The two of text editions contained in the book Seri Obat-Obatan Tradisional dalam Naskah Kuno: Koleksi Perpustakaan Nasional RI will be the object of study. The purpose of this research is to present an environmental-friendly natural soap based on ancient manuscripts. In this regard, this research focuses on the benefits and decomposition of traditional spices in manuscripts that can be used as ingredients for making natural bath soap. The results of this study can be seen that medicine texts can be used as an alternative material for making natural, environmentally friendly bath soap. traditional medicine manuscripts do not only stop at the level of knowledge but produce appropriate products that are beneficial to society. In addition to having cultural and profit values, namely as an alternative to creative industry products based on local wisdom, making environmental-friendly soap also has cultural values, namely preserving the contents of ancient manuscripts. --- Edisi teks naskah pengobatan tradisional hasil riset para pakar filologi belum banyak dimanfaatkan sebagai alternatif produk perawatan tubuh, khususnya sabun mandi natural. Dua diantaranya yaitu naskah pengobatan tradisional koleksi Perpustakaan Nasional Republik Indonesia berjudul Usada (berkode KBG 357) dan Tetamba Jampi (berkode BR 55). Edisi teks keduanya yang terdapat pada buku Seri Obat-Obatan Tradisional dalam Naskah Kuno: Koleksi Perpustakaan Nasional RI akan menjadi objek kajian. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menghadirkan sabun natural ramah lingkungan berbasis naskah kuno. Berkenaan dengan itu, penelitian ini berfokus pada penguraian rempah tradisional dalam naskah yang dapat digunakan sebagai bahan pembuatan sabun mandi natural beserta manfaatnya. Hasil dari penelitian ini dapat diketahui bahwa teks naskah pengobatan tradisional dapat digunakan sebagai alternatif bahan pembuatan sabun mandi natural ramah lingkungan. Naskah pengobatan tradisional tidak hanya terhenti pada tataran pengetahuan namun menghasilkan produk tepat guna yang bermanfaat bagi masyarakat. Selain bernilai budaya dan profit yaitu sebagai alternatif produk industri kreatif berbasis kearifan lokal, pembuatan sabun mandi ramah lingkungan juga bernilai budaya yaitu melestarikan kandungan naskah kuno.

Abstract

The dynamics of the development of Javanese literature show a spirit of tolerance and welcoming towards outside elements without neglecting the original ones. This is contradictory when juxtaposed with the fact that there are currently widespread phenomena of radicalism and intolerance. Responding to these social issues, this writing at a larger level will show that cultural heritage surprisingly take off differences that trigger religion-based conflicts and shows the existence of the essence of unity in diversity through the uncovering of the meaning of literary works. At a more specific level, this paper aims to reveal the universality of the Javanese view of the eschatological crisis that ends in the Judgment Day event through a close reading of a comparison of the apocalyptic narrative mode in the text of Old Javanese Mosalaparwa and Cariyos Dajal. After examining the two narrative texts in the realm of Javanese literature, there are narrative sections that form the structure of the text and reflect apocalyptic characteristics so that these local religious texts can be placed in the category of literary texts with apocalyptic narrative mode. When looking at the end of the story, referring to the classification of the apocalyptic genre according to Collins (2014), the Mosalaparwa text belongs to the historical apocalypses sub-type and the Cariyos Dajal text pertains to the apocalypses with heavenly journeys. --- Dinamika perkembangan sastra Jawa memperlihatkan adanya jiwa toleran dan welcoming terhadap unsur dari luar tanpa abai terhadap unsur asli. Hal ini bertolak belakang apabila disandingkan dengan fakta adanya fenomena radikalisme dan intoleransi yang marak saat ini. Merespon isu sosial tersebut, tulisan ini pada tataran yang lebih besar akan menunjukkan bahwa warisan budaya justru menanggalkan perbedaan yang menjadi pemicu konflik berbasis agama dan menunjukkan adanya esensi kebhinnekatunggalikaan melalui pengungkapan makna karya sastra. Pada tataran yang lebih khusus tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap universalitas pandangan masyarakat Jawa terhadap krisis eskatologis yang berujung pada peristiwa kiamat melalui close reading terhadap perbandingan mode naratif apokaliptik dalam teks Mosalaparwa Jawa Kuna dan Cariyos Dajal. Setelah kedua teks kisah hari akhir dalam ranah sastra Jawa tersebut dicermati, terdapat bagian-bagian naratif yang membentuk struktur teks dan mencerminkan karakteristik apokaliptik sehingga teks-teks religius lokal itu dapat ditempatkan dalam kategori teks sastra bermode naratif apokaliptik. Apabila melihat akhir ceritanya, maka merujuk pada klasifikasi genre apokaliptik menurut Collins (2014), teks Mosalaparwa termasuk ke dalam sub-tipe historical apocalypses dan teks Cariyos Dajal ke dalam apocalypses with heavenly journeys.

Abstract

The present article deals with Malay letters and documents from the archives of the Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie – VOC), dating to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The documents belong to the collection of the Russian scholar and collectioner N.P. Likhachev (1862-1936) and have been kept in the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts in St. Petersburg since 1938. The collection of VOC diplomatic letters that was in a possession of to Governor-General Johan van Hoorn (1653-1711), travelled from old Batavia, to Amsterdam and then to St. Petersburg. Fifty-six letters were written in different languages: Malay in Arabic and Javanese scripts, Dutch, Persian, Arabic, Spanish and Chinese. Mostly addressed to Johan van Hoorn the Dutch Governor-General in 1704-1709, they are not only exemplary of the fine art of Malay letter-writing, but also original diplomatic documents and historical sources on Dutch early colonial policy in Malay Archipelago.

Abstract

The names of wayang puppet makers or penatah (in Javanese) are well known among puppetry aficionados in Indonesia, but little tends to be known about their biographies. It is as if their personalities are overwhelmed by the greatness of their art work. In Yogyakarta’s wayang tradition, a number of names such Resapenatas, Maraguna, Kertiwanda, Prawirasucitra, Prayitnawiguna and Bundhu are very well known. All are considered great wayang makers or artists, with distinct aesthetic styles, but almost all details of their lives are unknown. The only substantial written text to concern penatah is a manuscript titled Sujarah Panatah (A History of Wayang Carvers)written in the early 20th century in Yogyakarta. Tales about carverstake the form of wayang plays. In one play, Ki Mangunwiguna teaches his son how to make a wayang based on prior exemplars. The author of the text tries to connect factual stories and myths about the gods. As in babad stories about kings of yore, wayang makers are presented as if they are also not just ordinary people. This is a means to establish their legitimacy. They are chosen, because they are able to communicate with gods. Alongside the text are wayang-style illustrations, supplementing the creativity of the narrative. This paper will consider the factual basis and validity of stories collected in the Sujarah Penatah, the way the text understands the origins of creativity and its mode for legitimising wayang makers and the continuity of their craft.

Abstract

Aksara Bali sering disebut sebagai the orthographic mysticism of Bali. Aksara Modre [suci] telah diyakini oleh masyarakat Bali, karena keutamaan [kottaman] aksaranya yang bertalian dengan bidang usadha [pengobatan tradisional Bali]. Sejumlah peneliti merasakan langsung kasiatnya, seperti para dukun [Bali: balian] hingga peneliti atau penekun lontar usadha asal luar negeri. Kottaman [keutamaan] aksara Modre menjadi sarana penting dalam prosesi pengobatan atau penyembuhan penyakit karena diyakini memiliki keutamaan gaib atau mistik. Ada sejumlah lontar yang berkaitan dengan kottaman aksara Bali, seperti: Aji Saraswati, usadha Tantri, Tutur Swara Wyanjana, dan yang lainnya. Kottaman aksara Bali sebagai sarana usadha Bali dapat digunakan sebagai penyelamat jiwa [pangraksaning jiwa], karena kekuatan energi yang ada dalam usadhi pranawa dapat menstanakan aksara bijaksara atau modre sebagai yantra lalu di-SAS [inisiasi obat] dengan kekuatan mantra dan yoga sang balian. Hal ini didukung oleh sejumlah lontar, seperti: Ruměksa ing Wěngi, Punggung Tiwas, Wisik Warah, dan yang lainnya. Konsep penyatuan antara pikiran suci sang balian dengan aksara Bali mahottama itu, sangat penting dilakukan ketika mengobati dengan usadhi pranawa. Hal ini identik dengan prosesi sabda tan mětu ketika menyatukan pikiran dengan sastra aji [aksara suci].
