Abstract

The Tabalong River is a raw water source for PT Air Minum Tabalong Bersinar and experiences substantial fluctuations in quality, especially during the rainy season. This study evaluated the technical effectiveness and cost-efficiency of polyaluminium chloride (PAC), alum, and their combinations during the coagulation–flocculation stage. A laboratory experiment was conducted using the jar test method in two stages. In the first stage, optimal operational doses of PAC and alum were determined by varying doses from 0–25 mg/L and setting a turbidity target of ≤5 NTU. In the second stage, five PAC:alum formulations, namely 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100, were tested. PAC and alum stock solutions were prepared at 2% w/v (20 mg/mL) and dosed into 1-L raw-water samples. Based on optimum doses of 10 mg/L PAC and 15 mg/L alum, the 75:25 formulation contained 7.50 mg/L PAC and 3.75 mg/L alum, corresponding to 0.375 mL/L PAC stock and 0.188 mL/L alum stock. The 75:25 formulation produced the best performance, reducing turbidity by 98.2%, colour by 100%, TSS by 90.3%, Fe by 90.8%, Mn by 88.9%, and E. coli by at least 97.8%, while maintaining pH at 7.18. Its final values were 2.27 NTU, 0 TCU, 15.40 mg/L TSS, 0.06 mg/L Fe, 0.06 mg/L Mn, and 22 MPN/100 mL E. coli. The coagulant cost was IDR 144/m³. This formulation provided the best balance between technical performance and coagulant cost; however, the treated water still required sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection to meet final drinking-water requirements under the tested conditions.

Abstract

Reclamation of ex-coal mining land with oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) is widely practiced in South Kalimantan, but the resulting lead (Pb) status of the soil is rarely quantified. This study analyzed Pb concentrations in reclaimed ex-mining soil planted with oil palm at PT. Amanah Batu Alam Persada, Banjar Regency, Indonesia, and assessed them against environmental quality standards. Composite topsoil (0–30 cm) was sampled under a bare control and oil palm stands following a completely randomized design (four treatments, five replicates, n = 20). Pb was determined by ICP-OES, with soil pH (H2O) and electrical conductivity (EC) as supporting parameters governing Pb mobility. Soil Pb ranged from 2.870 to 5.918 mg/kg, with the bare control showing the highest concentration (5.918 mg/kg). All values were far below the 300 mg/kg hazardous-waste threshold (category TK-C) of Government Regulation No. 22/2021, indicating the reclaimed soil is not classified as B3-contaminated and is safe for revegetation. The presence of oil palm was associated with lower soil Pb and with modified rhizosphere chemistry — pH declined from 6.456 to 4.462 and EC from 0.306 to 0.044 mS/cm — conditions that enhance Pb solubility and bioavailability and support phytoremediation. These findings confirm that oil palm reclamation keeps soil Pb within safe limits while actively reshaping the chemical environment that controls Pb behavior.

Abstract

Introduction: Quartz sand is a strategic non-metallic mineral commodity with high economic value, the management of which requires fair and competitive benchmark price policies. Current regulation under the South Kalimantan Governor Regulation (Pergub) Number 084 of 2023 has not established a definitive reference figure for the selling price, which potentially triggers business uncertainty and price manipulation. This study determines direct and indirect cost components, develops a sustainable environment-based selling price prediction model, and establishes the selling price per ton based on the percentage quality of SiO2 content.Method: This study utilizes an action research method with a descriptive qualitative and quantitative approach. The research analyzes the estimated total resources and reserves of quartz sand, laboratory results of quartz sand quality grades, planned production cost calculations, environmental costs (reclamation, post-mining, post-operation), mining safety costs, and community development and empowerment (PPM) costs, as well as measuring the hauling road distance from the mine to the port at PT Murah Rezeki Putra Putri Suryanata. Results: The research indicates that the direct production cost is Rp17,000 and the indirect cost is Rp5,000, yielding a Reference Production Price value of Rp22,000. Laboratory test results confirm that the quartz sand quality is exceptionally high, with silica (SiO2) content reaching 99.7% and a correction factor value of 14%. By applying the quality-based calculation model, the ideal and sustainable predicted selling price for quartz sand was found to be Rp307,076 per ton.

Abstract

Groups (Kelompok Wanita Tani/KWT) in household waste management in North Banjarmasin District. This study aimed to analyze the level of KWT participation and the factors influencing it. An explanatory quantitative approach was employed involving a population of 267 KWT members, with 43 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and questionnaires and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, multiple linear regression, and hypothesis testing with SPSS. The results indicated that the participation of KWT in household waste management remained in the poor category. Simultaneously, knowledge, motivation, environmental awareness, facilities and infrastructure, group leadership, and government support significantly affected KWT participation. Partially, only knowledge did not have a significant effect, while government support was identified as the most dominant factor (Beta = 1.154). These findings suggested that strengthening government support, continuous assistance, and community empowerment was essential to improve KWT participation in sustainable household waste management.

Abstract

The transportation subsystem is a crucial component of solid waste management in Indonesia, absorbing the largest budget allocation, which ranges from 60% to 80% of the total operational costs. The selection and accuracy of the transport pattern serve as the primary determining factors in maintaining transport efficiency, trip turnaround times, and the sustainability of urban sanitation services. This study aims to identify the waste transportation patterns implemented in Banjarmasin City. The research method employed is descriptive-analytical, with data collection based on direct field observations and structured interviews. The results indicate that the waste transportation pattern in Banjarmasin City adheres to a Hauled Container System (HCS) and a mixed Stationary Container System (SCS). Based on technical planning, the total fleet of 62 units includes 33 units of dump trucks and 3 units of compactor trucks to serve the mixed SCS pattern, while the HCS pattern is allocated using 26 units of armroll trucks. However, field findings reveal a mismatch between the actual function of the fleet and the transport patterns established by local regulations. Several fleets operate outside their functional capacities, which directly decreases operational effectiveness, increases fuel costs, and causes transport delays that trigger waste accumulation at several Temporary Disposal Sites (TPS).

Abstract

Kencur (Kaempferia galanga L.) is a bio-pharmaceutical plant with significant economic, cultural, and health value for communities in Banjar Regency, South Kalimantan. The Banjar Local Variety of kencur has been cultivated traditionally for generations; however, scientific information regarding its spatial distribution, rhizome morphological characteristics, and consumer preferences remains limited. This study aims to identify the spatial distribution pattern of the Banjar Local Variety of kencur, analyze the morphological characteristics of its rhizomes, and examine consumer preferences and behavior as a basis for developing this local bio-pharmaceutical commodity. The results indicate that the Banjar Local Variety of kencur shows a clustered spatial distribution pattern in certain villages, reflecting the sustainability of cultivation based on local wisdom. Morphologically, the rhizomes are characterized by a compact and rounded shape, light brown to yellowish color, strong aroma, and distinctive spicy taste. Consumer preferences fall into good to very good categories, particularly for aroma and taste attributes, with high levels of satisfaction and purchase intention. The integration of spatial analysis and consumer preferences reveals a relationship between production center areas and market acceptance levels. Therefore, the Banjar Local Variety of kencur has strong potential to be developed as a leading bio-pharmaceutical commodity based on local genetic resources in Banjar Regency.

Abstract

Climate change is one of the global environmental issues that has gained increasing attention in recent decades. The rising concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has led to alterations in the Earth’s climate system, characterized by an increase in global air temperatures, changes in rainfall patterns, and a higher frequency of extreme weather events. This study aims to analyze trends in rainfall and extreme air temperature as indicators for detecting climate change in Banjarbaru City. The data used consist of long-term climatological records from 1995 to 2024 obtained from the BMKG Meteorological Station Syamsudin Noor Banjarmasin. The results indicate an increasing trend in both rainfall and air temperature in Banjarbaru City during the observation period, suggesting the occurrence of climate change. The Oldeman agroclimatic classification shows that Banjarbaru City has consistently exhibited a C2 climate type over the past 30 years. However, there has been an increase in the number of wet months, from 5 months in the first decade to 6 months in both the second and third decades.
