Abstract

Needlestick injury is a percutaneous occupational injury caused by penetration of the skin by a needle contaminated with blood, tissue, or patient bodily fluids and may result in exposure to infectious diseases. The incidence of needlestick injuries at UPTD RSUD Depati Hamzah, Pangkalpinang City, increased from 3 cases in 2024 to 7 cases in 2025. This study aimed to analyze risk factors associated with needlestick injuries among healthcare workers at UPTD RSUD Depati Hamzah, Pangkalpinang City. This was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design. The study population consisted of 210 healthcare workers, with a sample of 152 respondents selected using quota sampling with proportional allocation by professional group. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews and analyzed using univariate analysis, bivariate analysis with the Chi-square test at α=0.05, and multivariate analysis using logistic regression. The results showed that 17 respondents (11.2%) experienced needlestick injuries. Bivariate analysis showed significant associations between age (p=0.000), safe injection training (p=0.000), and SOP implementation (p=0.003) and needlestick injuries, whereas length of employment (p=0.225) and safe injection practices (p=0.764) were not significantly associated. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that age (POR=12.222; 95% CI: 3.228–46.269; p=0.000), safe injection training (POR=20.857; 95% CI: 2.478–175.531; p=0.005), and SOP implementation (POR=4.219; 95% CI: 1.075–16.551; p=0.039) were significantly associated with needlestick injuries. Safe injection training was the most dominant factor because it had the highest POR, at 20.857. Preventive measures should include regular safe injection training, education on the risk of infectious diseases, provision of procedure carts in each unit, and strengthened monitoring by the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) team and supervision of SOP compliance.
