Abstract

Glass Fibre Reinforcement Polymer (GFRP) reinforcements are currently used as internal reinforcements for all flexural members due to their resistance to corrosion, high strength to weight ratios, the ability to handle easily and better fatigue performance under repeated loading conditions. Further, these GFRP reinforcements prove to be the better alternative to conventional reinforcements. The design methodology for flexural components has already come in the form of codal specifications. But the design code has not been specified for beam-column joints reinforced internally with GFRP reinforcements. The present study is aimed to assess the behaviour of exterior beam-column joint reinforced internally with GFRP reinforcements numerically using the ABAQUS software for different properties of materials, loading and support conditions. The mechanical properties of these reinforcements are well documented and are utilized for modelling analysis. Although plenty of literature is available for predicting the joint shear strength of beam-column joints reinforced with conventional reinforcements numerically, but no such study is carried for GFRP reinforced beam-columns joints. As an attempt, modelling of beam-column joint with steel and with GFRP rebars is carried out using ABAQUS software. The behaviour of joints under monotonically increasing static and cyclic load conditions. Interpretation of all analytical findings with results obtained from experiments. The analysis and design of beam-column joints reinforced with GFRP reinforcements are carried out by strut and tie model. Strut and Tie models are based on the models for the steel reinforced beam-column joints.  The resulting strut and tie model developed for the GFRP reinforced beam-column joints predicts joint shear strength. Joint shear strength values obtained from the experiments are compared with the analytical results for both the beam-column joints reinforced with steel and GFRP reinforcements. The joint shear strength predicted by the analytical tool ABAQUS is also validated with experimental results.

Abstract

Asphalt mixture that is used for the construction of flexible pavements is mainly composed of two constituents i.e. bitumen and aggregate. Sturdy adhesion among bitumen and aggregate is the sign of durability of asphalt pavements. Adhesion is considered as one of the most important factors for sustainable asphalt pavement. This is the motive why its miles utmost important to deeply understand the phenomenon of adhesion considering the effect of alternate in temperature, moisture conditions. In this study softer binder 80/100 was selected that has less adhesion compared to hard pen grades. Limestone aggregates which is commonly used for the construction of asphalt pavements has also been selected. Two types of modifiers (Zeolite and Paraffin Wax) were selected because of the extensive use in asphalt foaming and the polymer modified asphalt mixtures as temperature reducing agent. To investigate the strength of adhesive bond, Bitumen Bond Strength (BBS) was performed at different temperatures, in dry, and wet conditions. To quantify the effect of modifiers on penetration grade and softening point conventional testing is performed. For performance grading, the PG test was performed using Dynamic Shear Rheometer. The comparisons were developed among pull of tensile strength at dry and after 72hrs water conditioning while preserving the temperature at 25 .To check the effect of temperature BBS is performed at 15 . The results illustrate that 2% zeolite shows best results in terms of adhesion and performance grade while Paraffin wax has less adhesion and poor performance grade.

Abstract

Stilling basins can be defined as energy dissipaters constructed of the irrigation systems. This study aims at investigating the performance of the new seven baffle blocks design in terms of reducing the dimensions of stilling basins in irrigation systems. In order to assess the hydraulic efficiency of a new model for baffle block used in stilling basins, a Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has conducted. The results of this study demonstrate that the performance of the new baffle block, in term of hydraulic jump length reduction and hydraulic energy dissipation, it's better than standard blocks. However, the ratios of the drag resistance attributed to the new baffles block (FB / F2) have been larger than that applied on the normal block. It was found that the new block dissipates the energy by 9.31% more than the concrete block, and decreases the length of the hydraulic jump by 38.6% in comparison with the standard blocks. However, the new block maximizes the drag force ratio by 98.6% in comparison with the standard baffle blocks. The findings indicated that in terms of energy reduction and dissipation in the length of the hydraulic jump, the new block is superior to the other kinds.

Abstract

The article discusses fiber-optic sensors (FOS) based on the Bragg gratings for measuring systems for diagnostics of stress-strain state. Currently, such diagnostic systems are widely used in construction, industry and civil engineering. The physical principle of deformation diagnostics using FOS. The issues of mounting the sensor on the measured area (detail) are separately discussed. The principle of processing the hardware and software of sensors based on Bragg gratings is described. Research method - bench experiments that were carried out on an equal-deformation beam in order to evaluate the change in the width of the reflected FOS peak at different lengths recorded by the Bragg gratings in order to determine the optimal one. The change in the spectrum of the reflected peak under various deforming influences was monitored. Based on the results obtained, recommendations are made on the use of gratings of various lengths in the diagnostic systems for the stress-strain state of parts and assemblies for civil engineering tasks.

Abstract

This research is carried out to investigate pre-existing repair cracks in cement mortar using the microbiologically induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) technology. In the study, 20-cylinder mortar samples (45 mm in diameter and 40 mm in length) were split to have cracked width of various sizes. Out of twenty cracked samples, sixteen samples of average crack width ranging from 0.12 to 1.3 mm were repaired using the MICP method, while four cracked samples, with an average crack width ranging from 0.16 to 1.55 mm were soaked under distilled water. The water permeability and split tensile strength (STS) of these repaired mortars were tested. The amount of CaCO3 precipitated on the cracked mortar surfaces was evaluated. The results indicated that the MICP repair technique clearly reduced the water permeability of the cracked samples within the range of 73 to 84 %; while water-treated samples were too weak to undergo test. MICP-repaired samples had STS ranging from 29 to 380 kPa after 24 rounds of treatment. A relationship between the STS and percentage amount of CaCO3 precipitated was observed for samples with an average crack width between 0.29 and 1.1 mm, which indicated that STS increased with percentage increase in CaCO3 precipitated on the crack surfaces.

Abstract

Desulphurization of Ferronickel in the converters with oxygen is the most complex part of the technological process in the Drenas foundry. Sulphur in the ferronickel melting is mostly in the form of FeS, with a melting temperature of 1195oC, and it has tendency to dissolve indefinitely in liquid iron. Our objective is to determine the sulphur removal coefficient, as a key indicator of the desulphurization efficiency in the converter, by measuring the activity and concentration of sulphur and other elements in liquid Fe and melting. Determination of this coefficient is done according to the analytical method, while comparing the current process parameters with those of the new desulfurization methods, other indicators of the refining process are determined. The refining process and the effective conduct of the study depend on the XRD analysis database of metal and slag, and as well of the technological refining process analysis data. Research has shown that desulfurization efficiency is a function of the sulphur removal coefficient, respectively; metal composition, slag, oxygen activity, CaO/SiO2 ratio, sulphide capacity, fluidity, surface pressure, etc.). In addition to this coefficient, other indicators of refining process optimization are defined.

Abstract

Historical structures are important in terms of both original construction techniques and cultural heritage. Therefore, material properties, construction techniques and dynamic behaviors of these structures must be identified in order to preserve them in the future by restoration studies.  This study is aimed to serve as an example for similar buildings in the region whose walls were constructed using filled brick with lime mortar and constructed using both timber and reinforced concrete slabs. In this study, the plan layout, construction techniques and the material usage of the building were investigated in detail. The mechanical and dynamic properties such as compressive stress, elastic moduli, shear stress, natural frequencies and mode shapes of the building were determined in-situ by flat-jack, shear and vibration tests. The finite element model of the structure was prepared, and the modal analysis of the structure was performed. The calibration of the model was ensured according to the vibration test results. The results obtained from this study show us that in-situ tests are extremely important for the accuracy of finite element models. It has been determined that the mechanical test data can be used with over 80% success in finite element models.

Abstract

This paper presents a study to investigate the behavior of post-tensioned segmental concrete beams that exposed to high-temperature. The experimental program included fabricating and testing twelve simply supported beams that divided into three groups depending on the number of precasting concrete segments. All specimens were prepared with an identical length of 3150 mm and differed in the number of the incorporated segments of the beam (9, 7, or 5 segments). To simulate the genuine fire disasters, nine out of twelve beams were exposed to a high-temperature flame for one hour. Based on the standard fire curve (ASTM ? E119), the temperatures of 300?C (572?F), 500?C (932?F), and 700?C (1292?F) were adopted. Consequently, the beams that exposed to be cool gradually under the ambient laboratory condition, after that, the beams were loaded till failure to investigate the influence of the heating temperature on the performance during the serviceability and the failure stage. It was observed that, as the temperature increased in the internal layers of concrete, the camber of tested beams increased significantly and attained its peak value at the end of the time interval of the stabilization of the heating temperature. This can be attributed to the extra time that was consumed for the heat energy to migrate across the cross-section and to travel along the span of the beam and deteriorate the texture of the concrete causing microcracking with a larger surface area. Experimental findings showed that the load-carrying capacity of the test specimen, with the same number of incorporated concrete segments, was significantly decreased as the heating temperature increased during the fire event.

Abstract

In this paper we present a new solution for the highway interchange, which represents the best compromise between the traffic capacity, the land area used and construction cost. The difference between the known and the new design solution is in the implementation of the opposite directional ramps which are widely separated in the area of the interchange. In the middle, between the directional ramps, some space is created for the left directional ramps. Interchange should be used for four-way highway interchanges or other heavy traffic roads junction in order to increase the capacity and traffic safety at the crossing point. It has no conflict points. ITL Interchange left directional ramps is much shorter than all other known solutions for interchanges. The interchange is built in two levels. These two facts significantly lower the cost of construction. The study compares different types of interchanges. We made a geometric comparison and performance measures. In geometric comparison, the greatest advantages of the ITL interchange are the shortest overall roadway length and the shortest overpasses length. Therefore, such an interchange is advantageous in terms of construction and maintenance costs. When measuring performance, ITL Interchange achieves the best results regardless of the number of vehicles.

Abstract

The dry–wet cycle and high temperature exposure are important factors affecting the normal use and durability of concrete structures. The objective of this work is to investigate the mechanical properties of cement mortar specimens after combinations of dry–wet cycles and high temperature exposures, uniaxial compressive tests on cement mortar specimens were carried out under the following two sets of conditions: (1) high temperature treatment followed by a dry–wet cycle and (2) a dry–wet cycle followed by high temperature treatment. The results show that the compressive strength of specimens increases with the number of dry–wet cycles. After a dry–wet cycle and then a high temperature treatment procedure, the compressive strength of a specimen will first decrease and then increase with the number of dry–wet cycles. The strain at the peak stress of cement mortar decreases as the number of dry–wet cycles increases. At present, there are few research results about the mechanical properties of concrete first after combinations of dry–wet cycles and high temperature exposures. The work in this paper can enrich the results in this area.
