Abstract

Kadipiro is a village in District Banjarsari, Surakarta. Along Solo-Purwodadi road ispart of Kadipiro, along the road, there are more than fifty SMEs (Small and MediumEnterprises) that cultivate raw material of teak. Every day, a lot of wasted wood isgenerated from their production process. So far the wasted wood is just dumped intofirewood for individuals or SMEs that need firewood such as tofu SMEs, crackersSMEs, etc. It is of course very unfortunate, moreover teak is a kind of wood with a verygood quality. By looking at the environment and its resources, actually the wasted woodcan become a commodity that has high competitiveness with people creativity andinnovation. Jati Lawas Alto Solo SME is a creative SMEs that produce sills, doors, furniture, gazebo and wooden house with reclaimed wood of former house, formertimber of ships as their raw materials. In terms of raw materials, this SME isenvironmentally friendly SME. Karang Taruna (Youth organization), MMIB, see selfemploymentopportunities of those much wasted wood. Those wasted woods are usedas raw material for their production. However, the limitations of the equipment andmanagement make the uptake of raw material from wasted wood that is utilized as acreative product is still low. Abstract

The aim of this development research study is for making a prototype of Advance OSteaching model on Maths for primary school students. It is based on Gall, Gall, & BorgResearch and Development method which is developed from Dick & Carey’s theory. Thesteps are now simplified into 3 steps: previous study, model development, and modelmeasurement. On the first step--previous study--, the reseachers applied descriptivequalitativeapproarch by doing library reasearch, field research of the product, and getting thepreliminary research finding. On the second step--model development--, teaching model wasdeveloped by appliying Dick & Carey’s model. This step was a compiling step of planning, developing draft of product, preliminary test, first revision, and widely test of product. Thelast step--model measurement--is the step for measuring the effect of the product. It was doneby conducting “true experimental design” using “posttest–only control design”. The researchfinding of this study is Advance OS teaching model on mathematics for primary schoolstudents. It has four big steps on appliying the model: presenting advance organizer, eksploring scientific approach, presenting organizer, and open-ended step includingempowering cognitive structure by giving open-ended questions to the students. Keywords: advance OS, research and development, primary school

Abstract

The writer of this paper believes that innovative strategy for education in digital era isreally needed , especially in teaching English. This paper focuses in how to use the internetfor teaching speaking and listening. The reason is people all around the world now use theinternet everyday for their various needs, Some use the internet for entertainment, businessor education.Talking about teaching speaking, a teacher or a lecturer can use the internet fordownloading splendid short educational videos with various topics as the teaching material. We can play the videos with various topics of conversation. Students are asked to watch thevideos by paying attention to how the native speakers pronounce the English wordsproperly. The teacher or the lecturer can deliver spontaneous questions about the videos.Without them realizing, students will have an exercise how to speak Englishnaturally.Another way is students can be asked to imitate for example, pronouncing newvocabularies or difficult words. The native speaksers in the video are playing roles asmodels for students to learn. By using short educational videos taken from the internet, ateaching and learning process will be more fun and interesting. Besides video, we can usethe internet to download films or songs. Because speaking skill relates to listening skill, wecan also train students’ ability in speaking by giving them a lot of practices in listening. After watching a film for instance, students are taught to retell certain dialogues from thefilm. We are also possibly to have a small discussion about the theme of the film. We candivide students in groups to discuss together. By doing so, students will practice bothspeaking and listening skill.About songs, students can be asked to write the lyric of thesongs that had been heard. We play the songs for several times and students will “guess”the lyric. From the lyric of a song, students can learn many vocabularies. New vocabulariesare essential in speaking. We see here that the internet can maximize a teaching andlearning process. We can use language laboratory to play the short videos and givequestions to all students. They will learn about different accent of spoken English toobecause sometimes the “player” in the videos come from various background. Some areAmerican, European or Afro-American. Internet has become “a friend” for everybody. Itcan be accessed from a cellphone instead of a laptop. It is easier for us to get many kinds ofinformation quickly. But in school or campus, the use of internet in a language laboratorywill be more effective. Keywords : innovative teaching strategy; the internet; video; song; teaching speaking and listening

Abstract

Fennel leaves are composed of various components that are beneficial to health andprovide a distinctive flavor. The effort to increase fennel leaf consumption isthrough the processing of fennel leaf flour as an intermediate product which can besubstituted in noodle product. The purpose of the study was to evaluate theelongation, cooking loss and acceptance of wet noodles substituted fennel leafflour. The study used a complete randomized design, with 4 fennel leaf floursubstitution treatments, were 0%, 2.5%, 5% and 7.5%. Wet noodles were analyzedfor elongation, cooking loss and acceptance. The elongation and the cooking lossdata were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA at a level of 0.05, while theacceptance data were analyzed using non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis followed byDuncan test. The results indicated that there was the influence of fennel leavesflour substitution on tensile strength, strain, cooking loss and acceptance of wetnoodles. The highest tensile strength was shown by wet noodle substituted 2.5%fennel leaf flour, was 0.18N. The biggest strain was revealed by wet noodlesubstituted with 0% fennel leaf flour, was 58.65%. The lowest cooking loss of wetnoodle was given by the substitution of 2.5%, was 0.66%. The lowest cooking lossof wet noodle was given by the substitution of 2.5%, was 0.66%.
