Abstract

Abstract: Dysmenorrhea is pain that occurs during menstruation and is most common in adolescent women, resulting in many visits to gynecology clinics. Menstrual discomfort can sometimes make women unable to perform activities and is accompanied by emotional instability. In reducing pain, this study explains the effectiveness of carrot juice in reducing primary menstrual pain. This study used a true experimental method with a randomized pre-test-post-test design. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Data analysis was based on the severity grade of the Verbal Multidimensional Scoring System. Data normality was tested. A paired t-test was used to determine the normal distribution of data. If the distribution was not normal, a Wilcoxon test was used. The mean score before carrot juice administration was 1.48, categorized as moderate pain, while after carrot juice administration it was 0.43, categorized as mild pain. The mean dysmenorrhea pain before and after carrot juice administration was 1.05 (95% CI: 2.50-3.20) with a mean SD of 1.00. Based on the results of the t-test, α = 0.05 indicates a P-value of 0.000, meaning the paired test results are 0.05. Carrot juice is effective in reducing menstrual pain experienced by students of the UMSU Faculty of Medicine.

Abstract

Abstract: Balanced nutrition, growth and development monitoring, and complete immunization are essential factors in supporting child health. Mothers’ lack of knowledge regarding these aspects may increase the risk of growth disorders, infectious diseases, and developmental delays in children. This community service activity aimed to assess mothers’ level of knowledge regarding balanced nutrition, child growth and development, and complete immunization at Posyandu (Pusat Layanan Terpadu/Integrated Service Center) Nuri ILP, UPT(Unit Pelayanan Terpadu/Integrated Service Unit) Puskesmas Kenangan Medan. Method: The activity was conducted through health education and questionnaire distribution to mothers with toddlers. The program was carried out using interactive and educational approaches, including lectures, discussions, and evaluation of participants’ understanding. The results showed an improvement in mothers’ knowledge after the educational intervention, particularly regarding the importance of providing balanced nutrition, routine monitoring of child growth, and completion of basic immunization. Conclusion: Health education at posyandu can be an effective approach to improve mothers’ knowledge and awareness of child health.

Abstract

Abstract: Preeclampsia is one of the complications of pregnancy that can disrupt blood flow to the placenta so that the intake of nutrients to the fetus is disrupted and at risk of causing low birth weight (LBW). This study aims to determine the relationship between preeclampsia and the incidence of LBW at Drs. H. Amri Tambunan Hospital. Observational analytical research type with a case-control design. The sample totalled 176 postpartum patients for the period July 2021-August 2024, which were taken using consecutive sampling. Data analysis used the Chi-Square test with SPSS. The results of this study were 88 cases of preeclampsia and 88 cases of non-preeclampsia. In the preeclampsia group, 72 infants (81.8%) had LBW and 16 infants (18.2%) did not have LBW. In the non-preeclampsia group, 11 infants (12.5%) experienced LBW, and 77 infants (87.5%) did not have LBW. The results of the chi-square test showed a value of p=0.000 (p0.05). There is a significant relationship between preeclampsia and the incidence of LBW at Drs. H. Amri Tambunan Hospital.

Abstract

Abstract: Preeclampsia is a complication of pregnancy with various risk factors that also affect perinatal outcomes, especially the incidence of low birth weight (LBW). This study aims to analyze the relationship between risk factors for maternal age, gestational age, and parity on the incidence of LBW in mothers with preeclampsia. Observational analytical research with a case-control design was carried out at Drs. H. Amri Tambunan Hospital for the period August–October 2024. A sample of 176 people (88 preeclampsia, 88 non-preeclampsia) was taken using a consecutive sampling technique. Data analysis using Chi-Square test with SPSS. There was a significant relationship between maternal age (p=0.000), gestational age (p=0.000), and parity (p=0.001) with preeclampsia. The age group 35 years (40.9%), preterm pregnancy (39.8%), and primigravida (35.2%) dominated the preeclampsia cases. The risk factors of maternal age, gestational age, and parity were significantly related to the incidence of LBW in preeclamptic mothers at Drs. H. Amri Tambunan Hospital.

Abstract

Abstract: Cataract is one of the leading causes of visual impairment that can be effectively managed through surgery. Assessment of visual acuity on the first postoperative day is crucial for evaluating early visual outcomes and detecting potential early postoperative complications. Age is hypothesized to influence visual outcomes due to the higher prevalence of ocular anatomical changes. This study aims to assess whether age influences the early visual outcome following cataract surgery. This study employed an observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach, involving 654 patients who underwent cataract surgery. Subjects were divided into two age-based groups: 60 years and ≥60 years. Visual acuity was assessed preoperatively and on the first postoperative day (POD-1) using the LogMAR units. The 60 years age group demonstrated an improvement in visual acuity from 1.61±0.50 LogMAR to 0.42±0.37 LogMAR on the first postoperative day. The ≥60 years age group showed an improvement from 1.57±0.52 LogMAR to 0.50±0.41 LogMAR. A statistically significant difference was observed between the two age groups (p=0.022). Age influences early visual outcomes on the first postoperative day following cataract surgery. Patients aged 60 years exhibited slightly superior visual results compared to those aged ≥60 years.
