Abstract

This research demonstrates the relationship of fantasy fiction, archetypes, romanticism and nationalism in one of fantasy fiction, namely Tolkien’s The Silmarillion. Since fantasy fiction, with the stereotype of escapism, is less appreciated this article is written in attempt to give more appreciation to fantasy fiction. Analysis to show the relationship of fantasy fiction, archetype, romanticism and nationalism is carried out by applying archetypal approach and Frye’s concept of mythos. This analysis is aimed at determining the position of the story in Frye’s mythos taxonomy and its values. The values, then, are compared with values found in English nationalistic discourse. The result of this analysis indicates that the story of The Silmarillion can be classified as tragic mythos. However, tragedy in the Silmarillion is elaborated differently from the characteristics of the mythos suggested by Frye. Tragedy of The Silmarillion is collective in its nature. The uniqueness of tragedy in The Silmarillion, then, is read as representation of fellowship spirit value in English nationalistic discourse. The Silmarillion also shows wisdom and historical continuity values parallel with values found English nationalistic discourse. From these values The Silmarillion shows that pastoral life with its collectivity, wisdom and tranquility as an ideal life for English people. Further, the revealed values also shows that in establishing England national identity, Tolkien, like his national identity builders predecessor, refers to old wisdoms. He refers to values that are perceived as part of values in previous past gloriuos era. By doing so it can be concluded that in establishing the national identity Tolkien uses the same method with his predecessor; refering back to the previous golden era—a kind of romanticism.

Abstract

Hall in Lauring (2011, p. 233) states that ‘culture is communication and communication is culture’. People from different cultural background have different way of maintaining the relationship between speakers and hearers. Brown and Levinson (1987) believe that culture and politeness have significant effect toward the success of communication. They add that people need to show their awareness of other people’s face want, public self-image. The hearers from some cultures are often imposed by the speakers from another culture since each culture has its own standard and value in categories the politeness. However, people come from two area which are geographically close often get no problem with politeness strategies when they have communication. Their geographic closeness make them easy to adopt and understand the culture, and then each of them know how to communicate in order not to threaten the hearers’ face. Therefore, this essay intends to discuss about the comparison between politeness strategies in two cultures which are geographically close, Chinese and Japanese. It is assumed that those cultures can be closely related one to another because of the geographical position. In addition, the essay also discuses about the politeness strategy differences between two cultures which are geographically not close. In this term, the writer compares Chinese/Japanese and western cultures, especially English speaking countries. Moreover, the discussion also includes the explanation on how FTAs can occur in intercultural communication between Chinese, Japanese, and English speakers.

Abstract

The phenomenon of critical thinking, as one aspect of learning experiences, is challenging. Yet, it reflects students’ ideas and understanding of particular matters, especially in academic writing among the English education institutions. Thus, this study was aimed to investigate how undergraduate students fashioned their understanding of being self-driven in writing research proposal relating to reading skills. The research questions drop into two big areas: 1) How is critical thinking reflected in research proposal writing, 2) What are evidences of being critical in addressing research proposal? Having three sessions of in-depth interview, fifty seven students of English department of a private university in West Java, Indonesia were involved in the reflection of their writing and reading experiences during the study. The data were collected through interview and document observation. The findings suggest that first, the critical writing is reflected by such citation and elaborative sentences as the distinctive writing features of academic writing. Second, the extended description and elaboration are made due to reading constraint. Books are mainly the sources, whereas research journal articles are still less appreciated. Thus, reading is defines as the evidence of being critical. The results of the study play significant contribution in building critical thinking, critical reading, and critical writing as self-awareness manifesto among the students of English education.
