Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the forms of hybridity as a result of the existence of postcolonial cultural contact with the construction of a colonial form. Researchers revealed the hybridity represented by the characters Parvez and Ali in My Son the Fanatic Short Story by Hanief Kureshi. This study used the Postcolonialism approach in the hybridity concept of Homi K Bhabha. According to. Bhabha (1994) Hybridity is a cross between two different cultures in a tangent interaction. In this case, hybridity is not only seen as a fusion of culture but also cultural products placed in social and historical space under postcolonialism which are part of the imposition of colonial power relations. The qualitative descriptive method was used in this study because of its essence in descriptive text analysis in predetermined literary works. The results of this study indicated that there are two forms of hybridity representation in this study. First, the character of mimicry in the sense of ambiguity and contradictory character as a discourse of cultural devotion due to the colonial construction that was formed. Mimicry is represented by the character Parvez in the story. Second, the ambivalence represented by his son named Ali. Ali was aware of the colonial discriminatory against culture so he resisted the construction but on the other hand, he did not know what identity he should hold.

Abstract

Ecolinguistics is an interdisciplinary study that looks at the link between ecology and linguistics. This study involves other studies, including sociology, anthropology, psychology, and political science. Socio-ecological aspects also greatly affect the maintenance, balance, and environmental inheritance of future generations. These local ecological wisdoms need to be included in a healthy and green environmental discourse (green speak). Knowledge about natural entities for millennial generation has begun to decrease due to the influence of digital technology which is very large. This can also lead to environmental damage and can also damage language by not understanding the cultural functions of the ecolexicon. The amount of Eco lexicon shifting ‘water’ causes millennial generation to no longer know the use of these words in Toba Batak culture. Changes in the lifestyle of the Toba Batak millennial generation have changed considerably and pay less attention to the natural cultural functions. The method used in this study is observation, interviews and qualitative descriptive. This study describes the fact that many natural ecolexics are not recognized anymore and even almost extinct in the Batak Toba community (rootlessness), some of which are mabakbak (flowing tears), bibis (flowing from a container fullness, lungkis (flowing smoothly) and then elaborated in the discussion.

Abstract

Indonesia is known as the country "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" that means unity in diversity also symbolizes the unity of the NKRI which is strong and sturdy even though it consists of different backgrounds. Ethnic language is one type of diversity that Indonesian have. In heterogeneous societal structures, language clashes are an unavoidable phenomenon especially in big cities. Language attitudes are tested especially in groups of teenagers. If the speech community does not have a strong language attitude, it will certainly have an impact on language retention. One of the ethnic groups that experienced in this phenomenon was the Batak Toba ethnic group as the urban people in Batam. The aim of this study is to describe the occurrence of the understanding of the Batak Toba adolescents in Batam City in terms of lexicon mastery related to body parts. To get the data on the level of understanding of respondents, as many as 45 lexicon data were tested through a questionnaire to respondents aged 12-18 years who numbered 50 people, and the results were further described. The results showed that there was a decrease in understanding in the group of adolescents towards the body language lexicon of the Batak Toba language. The majority of respondents only heard of the lexicons but did not know the references. This is evidence of the gap in ethnic language understanding between parents and adolescents. This understanding gap is a result of the lack of learning or use of ethnic language in the family. If this condition is then left alone, it is certain that the lexicon will become extinct because it will disappear from the entity's understanding of the speaker.
