Abstract

This study aims at identifying and describing the mastery of reseptive vocabulary of the totally blind person. It examines the mastery of word clasess, vocabulary quantity and non-linguistic factors that affect of vocabulaty mastery using tactual sensory. The study applies descriptive qualitative and simple quantitative approach. The data are obtained from the comprehension of questions and the speech of a totally blind person using tactual sensory to the concrete objects. The data are collected employing participant observational method, supported by interviewing, recording, and note taking techniques. Then,the data are analyzed by using referential identity method (Sudaryanto, 1993). The result of study shows that the average of totally blind student vocabulary mastery is 88,6% of the tested words.The vocabulary mastery based on the word classes are nominal, verbal, adjectiva and adverbial. The quantity of vocabulary mastery is 89 words, consits of 46 nouns, 25 verbs, 14 adjectives and 4 adverbs. The non-linguistic factors affect the vocabulary mastery are; (1) intelective psychology, (2) psychis and (3) age. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan penguasaan kosakata murid tunanetra totally blind  dengan menggunakan indera peraba ditinjau dari penguasaan kosata reseptif, kelas kata, kuantitas kosakata dan faktor–faktor yang mempengaruhi  penguasaan kosakata reseptif  penyandang tunanetra tersebut. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dan kuantitatif sederhana. Data diperoleh dari pemahaman pertanyaan yang diberikan dan tuturan  penyandang tunanetra menggunakan indera peraba pada benda-benda konkret. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan metode simak, didukung oleh teknik wawancara, rekam, dan catat. Selanjutnya data tersebut dianalisis dengan menggunakan metode padan referensial. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa; (1) penyandang tunanetra totally blind menguasai 88,6% kosakata reseptif dengan kategori baik, sementara kuantitas kosakata berdasarkan kelas kata, total 89 kosakata yang terdiri dari 46 kata benda, 25 kata kerja, 14 kata sifat dan 4 kata keterangan, (2)beberapa faktor mempengaruhi penguasaan kosakata reseptif kedua penyandang tunanetra; (a) faktor internal yaitu psikologi intelektif dan psikis, (b) faktor eksternal yaitu umur.

Abstract

Abstract— The objective of this study aimed at knowing the perspective of Malay’s teenagers towards their own language in Batam. Malay language is a unique language where mostly Bahasa Indonesia is taken from it. This study is important to be conducted since the preservation issue of local culture, including its language, arrises as the main concern. The study used qualitative method where to collect the data some informants were needed to provide the information about their own perspective toward their language. Those informants are the teenagers of Malay who are living in Batam, Riau Islands Province. The researcher collected the data by using interview and record it by using video camera or voice note. Some questions were asked during the session to some Malay’s teenagers. There were four questions answered by the informants and they showed a good point of view from Malay’s teenagers towards their own language and culture. The study revealed that the teenagers were proud of their local identity including language and culture. Keywords— Malay language, teenagers’ perspective, Batam’s Malay.  Abstrak— Tujuan dari penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perspektif remaja Melayu terhadap bahasa mereka sendiri di Batam. Bahasa Melayu adalah bahasa yang unik di mana sebagian besar orang Indonesia diambil darinya. Studi ini penting dilakukan karena masalah pelestarian budaya lokal, termasuk bahasanya, muncul sebagai perhatian utama. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif di mana untuk mengumpulkan data beberapa informasi diperlukan untuk memberikan informasi tentang perspektif mereka sendiri terhadap bahasa mereka. Informan tersebut adalah remaja Melayu yang tinggal di Batam, Provinsi Kepulauan Riau. Peneliti mengumpulkan data dengan menggunakan wawancara dan merekamnya dengan menggunakan kamera video atau catatan suara. Beberapa pertanyaan diajukan selama sesi kepada beberapa remaja Melayu. Ada empat pertanyaan yang dijawab oleh informan dan mereka menunjukkan sudut pandang yang baik dari remaja Melayu terhadap bahasa dan budaya mereka sendiri. Studi ini mengungkapkan bahwa para remaja bangga dengan identitas lokal mereka, termasuk bahasa dan budaya.. Kata Kunci— Bahasa Melayu, perspektif remaja, Bahasa Melayu Batam.

Abstract

Abstract This article discusses about some strategies  of  teaching speaking to the  low vision students. The suggested teaching strategies conform to the principles of  teaching and learning  to the students. The three principles that  must be understood by the teachers especially the English teacher are concrete experiences, unification concepts and  learning by doing. These teaching strategies  aim  to obtain the content instruction, language development and to encourage active envolvement in learning process. It is expected that by using these strategies can achieve the graduate competency standard of  speaking skill as stated in the role of education and culture Minister No 23/2006 and 2006 curriculum.   Key words :    Low vision, strategy, competency standard.

Abstract

English Skill is the most important nowadays so that this skill must be learned starting from the young age. Unfortunately, the 2013 curriculum has shown that English subject is only the internal component which is only the optional subject in an elementary school. In fact, seeing the era development, English has become the obligatory need for every level of education included Elementary school. As Li stated that the language acquisition is more effective before puberty because the human brain is is still flexible to learn many languages (Li, 2014). It means that the elementary students must have been introduced to English language. The government of Batam is aware of the importance of learning English for the elementary school students because Batam as one of the big trading cities in Indonesia must prepare the human resources which are able to speak English. However, there are many English teachers are still lack of English pedagogical competencies and for recruiting some new ones need extra budgets that can not be realized sooner. The best solution for this situation is to train the incompetent English teachers so that they are able to teach English to the elementary school competently (Post,2017). This idea has inspired the team of community service to train the elementary school teachers in Sagulung region to be the pedagogical competency of English teachers.The train has been responded by the the teachers positively and expected to be continued regularly in the future.

Abstract

There are some methods used in teaching English. One of them is TPR (Total Physical Response). This method was used for mothers and children in Villa Muka Kuning because it doesn’t only concern on language skill but it will make participants actively engange in learning process. In this community services, TPR method was applied by using flash cards, songs and games. After conducting the community services, it showed that both mothers and childres were very excited learning English. Moreover, the ability of mothers in teaching English to their children ran more effectively. It is hoped that mothers can optimize their ability in learning English. Therefore, they can teach their children learning English

Abstract

Euphemism is a more polite expression to substitute the rude expression which assume as the harsh or offensive words. This expression is often used in communication both spoken or written such as, the word ‘die’ is changed into ‘pass away’. The euphemistic expressions are also found on both printed or online media as newspaper. A newspaper has the power of influencing the reader’s mind in delivering many kinds of news or events in daily life. In this developing communication era, the preference and the use of the proper words in a newspaper is a must. The journalist is demanded to be able to deliver the news by using the polite and formal words instead of the offensive words. This research aimed to describe the use of euphemistic expressions on the online newspaper namely Express which was about the marriage life of the Late Princes lady Diana and The Prince Charles from United Kingdom. This was a descriptive research and Warren’s theory as cited in (Beizaee & Mirza, 2016) was used to analyze the use of euphemistic expressions based on semantic innovation and formal innovation found in some articles on Expressonline newspaper. The data is in the form of words and phrases and in analyzing the data, the researcher used the pragmatic referential method which interpret the meaning of euphemistic expressions based on the context. The results of this research are the types of semantic innovation used included particularization, implication and metaphor, meanwhile for the formal innovation included foreign words, derivation. The most dominant for semantic and formal innovation are implication and derivation. The researcher conclude that from the results, it can be said that the express online newspaper has done the good effort to deliver the news about the phenomenal marriage life of the late Princess Lady Diana and The Prince Charles by using euphemistic expressions so far.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the form and function of phatic words in Malay language of Kepulauan Riau. Phatic word is the word that does not have any information or ideas in it. This study was a qualitative study. To collect the data, it used some informants. The informants were the Malay teenagers who lived in Batam. Then, informants were interviewed and recorded during the interview session. From the data, it was found some phatic categories such as phatic particles (lah, kan, pun, sih, nah, kah), phatic words (halo, ayok, ya, yak, iye, yeh, ye, tu, tuh, cam, macam, gitu, oi, wei, eh, weh), phatic phrases (assalamualaikum, insyaallah), and phatic integration (cam tu lah, gitu lah, cam.. sih, nah gitu). It was also found the phatic function such as the way to break, to prove, to confirm, to affirm, to convince, to start and end the conversation.

Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia is known as the country "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" that means unity in diversity also symbolizes the unity of the NKRI which is strong and sturdy even though it consists of different backgrounds. Ethnic language is one type of diversity that Indonesian have. In heterogeneous societal structures, language clashes are an unavoidable phenomenon especially in big cities. Language attitudes are tested especially in groups of teenagers. If the speech community does not have a strong language attitude, it will certainly have an impact on language retention. One of the ethnic groups that experienced in this phenomenon was the Batak Toba ethnic group as the urban people in Batam. The aim of this study is to describe the occurrence of the understanding of the Batak Toba adolescents in Batam City in terms of lexicon mastery related to body parts. To get the data on the level of understanding of respondents, as many as 45 lexicon data were tested through a questionnaire to respondents aged 12-18 years who numbered 50 people, and the results were further described. The results showed that there was a decrease in understanding in the group of adolescents towards the body language lexicon of the Batak Toba language. The majority of respondents only heard of the lexicons but did not know the references. This is evidence of the gap in ethnic language understanding between parents and adolescents. This understanding gap is a result of the lack of learning or use of ethnic language in the family. If this condition is then left alone, it is certain that the lexicon will become extinct because it will disappear from the entity's understanding of the speaker.

Abstract

Arus globalisasi tidak dipungkiri memberikan dampak yang kurang baik terhadap penggunaan bahasa. Kemampuan berbahasa santun sebagai wujud nilai-nilai kearifan lokal sudah sangat jarang ditemukan. Oleh karena itu, tim pengabdi berusaha memberikan solusi bagi ibu-ibu majelis taklim perumahan Villa Muka Kuning dalam melestarikan nilai-nilai kearifan lokal khususnya kemampuan menggunakan bahasa santun pada komunikasi ibu dan anak. Metode yang digunakan yaitu wawancara, ceramah dan simulasi percakapan bahasa santun. Pelatihan percakapan santun dilakukan dengan memberikan contoh-contoh bahasa santun antara ibu dan anak. Di samping itu, tim pengabdi juga memberi kesempatan kepada para partisipan untuk mempraktikkannya dalam kelompok (in-pair group). Dari praktik komunikasi yang dilaksanakan selama kegiatan pengabdian menunjukkan bahwa ibu-ibu majelis taklim mampu meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa santun.  Ibu-ibu majelis taklim mampu memberikan respon yang baik dalam menggunakan bahasa santun. Setelah melaksanakan kegiatan ini, ibu-ibu majelis taklim diharapkan dapat menggunakan bahasa santun dalam komunikasi dengan anak di lingkungan keluarga masing-masing. Pembiasaan penggunaan bahasa santun diharapkan dapat menjadi salah satu upaya dalam melestarikan nilai-nilai kearifan lokal yang hampir ditinggalkan seiring dengan berkembangnya teknologi informasi.
