Abstract

This study is a novel attempt to examine the theme of nature in the poetry of John Keats and Abu Al-Qasim Al-Shabbi since nature is of great importance in Romantic poetry whether Arabic or English. The objective of the present study is to investigate the concept of nature in some selected poems by Keats and Al-Shabbi. The study has proposed that there is a relationship between nature in Arabic poetry and English poetry since Al-Shabbi was influenced by English romantics like Wordsworth, Shelley and Keats through some translations of their poetry. Keats and Al-Shabbi are celebrated poets in English and Arabic Romantic literature. Although they died young at 25 and had only a few years of experience with poetry, they wrote the most beautiful poems that revealed their poetic abilities which were sufficient to rank them among the greatest poets. The study has adopted the qualitative, analytical and comparative approach. The study concluded that there is a similarity between Al-Shabbi and Keats because they belong to the same poetic trend. For Keats, the natural world represents an ideal environment and a source of beauty and truth. For Al-Shabbi, nature represents the spiritual unity between man and nature and a refuge from the cruelty of the city and the anxieties of life. Both Keats and Al-Shabbi found a solace in nature due to their identical suffering; Keats of physical illness of TB and Al-Shabbi of heart disease. Accordingly, they escaped to nature to forget their worries.

Abstract

Within the vast landscape of Nigerian literature, evolving into three principal literary genres, the critical study of poetry has been somewhat neglected, especially when contrasted with the substantial analysis devoted to drama and novels. This is partially attributed to the language used in poetry, its nature which is steep in semantic indirection and its method of pedagogy which often problematizes its appreciation. This study contributes to the study of poetry by exploring Nigerian poetry within the tenets of M.A.K. Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistic, and qualitative and descriptive design. The analysis focuses on a selected corpus of written Nigerian poetry in the English language, by Wole Soyinka, Christopher Okigbo, Tanure Ojaide, Odia Ofeimun, Psalms Chinaka, and Obari Gomba, which spans the oeuvres of three distinct generations and serve as exemplars of their respective generations. The study provides valuable insights into the significance of language, the evolution of Nigerian poetry, and its styles and functions. It is supported by tangible examples that showcase various elements, such as cohesion, deviation, and code-mixing. It offers a crucial understanding that the use of English in Nigerian poetry is not just a colonial legacy. It is a choice shaped by postcolonial reality. Its deployment is not incidental but a deliberate act of appropriation, protest, and a call for change. This is by the amplification of the voices of marginalized groups within Nigerian society such that language as a socio-semiotic system is deployed to tackle multifaceted issues that plague Nigerian society. The study submits that there is a nuanced tapestry of ideological and stylistic dialogue that connects and differentiates the first, second, and third generations of Nigerian poets. This intergenerational dialogue highlights a continuum of thematic and aesthetic concerns, with notable shifts reflecting the evolving socio-political landscape of Nigeria.

Abstract

In an era marked by rapid technological advancements intersecting with educational practices, the current inquiry focuses on the transformative potential of machine learning models, specifically ChatGPT, within higher education learning environments. Central to the discourse is the question: To what extent can ChatGPT function as a transformative tool in these educational spaces? While existing literature ventures into the capabilities of ChatGPT for simplistic tasks such as text generation, a comprehensive argumentative review that scrutinises its pedagogical applications remains conspicuously absent. This lacuna in academic scholarship necessitates the present study, which employs a multidisciplinary framework incorporating active learning theories, blended pedagogical models, and critical pedagogy. Through a meticulous dissection of empirical evidence, the investigation reveals ChatGPT's potential to enhance student engagement, enriching the curriculum and posing new ethical considerations. Significance emanates from the nuanced understanding and critical appraisal of ChatGPT's role, limitations, and ethical dilemmas in higher education, thereby contributing to a burgeoning field at the intersection of machine learning and pedagogy.

Abstract

Studying errors in English as a foreign language is crucial for both teachers and learners. This study aims to identify and analyze the types of errors in writing descriptive texts produced by students at SMA N 8 Manado, with a focus on determining the most prevalent types. This qualitative study employs the classification error theory based on Dulay et al. (1982), namely, the surface strategy taxonomy, omission, misordering, addition, and misformation. The students in SMA N 8 Manado, as the sample of this study, were asked to write a paragraph about their goals. The results of this study showed the percentage of errors made by students in writing descriptive text, which are, omission error (25,23%), error of misordering (7,47%), error of addition (10,28%), and error of misformation (57,94). This study also found other errors that are produced by some students that are not included in the classification of errors by Dulay et al (1982), they are errors in punctuation and capitalization.

Abstract

The Total Physical Response (TPR) method is a teaching strategy that helps children learn the names of body parts through movement and rhythm. The purpose of this study is to find out the students’ perceptions of the Total Physical Response (TPR) method of teaching vocabulary at British English School Makassar. The sample for the study included 28 junior students from British English School Makassar. A quantitative study design was employed to collect data relating to the perceptions of the pupils. The questionnaire functioned as the research instrument to help achieve the study’s objectives. The questionnaire was created using the questionnaire that Lin, Chan, and Hasio (2011) used to assess how EFL students felt about learning vocabulary in a computer-supported collaborative environment. A descriptive statistic was employed to analyze the data obtained from the surveys. There were two steps to the data analysis technique. First, the researcher assessed the students’ perceptions using a Likert scale. Second, converted the perception data from the students into a percentage analysis. Subsequently, the researcher employed the students’ statement category to interpret the students’ perspectives. The results verify that 23 or 82.14% of students gave very positive responses, and 5 or 17.86% of students gave positive responses. It revealed that using the Total Physical Response (TPR) method has helped pupils learn language more effectively because the positive environment in the classroom allowed students to enjoy the learning process.
