Abstract

This study investigates how feedback is responded by learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) having distinctive individual differences, and how these two relate to their achievement in their Speaking ability as productive skill. A group of English Department students at Hasanuddin University comprising high achievers and low achievers is observed in an attempt to collect as much information as possible to get clearer picture of the role of feedback as the second source of input after the teaching materials presented earlier in class. Using descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data, the study reveals that teachers’ feedback as source of input plays important roles in helping learners gain better performance in speaking skills. However, in some cases, negative effect of feedback is suffered by certain students which lead to the conclusion that individual differences and teachers’ feedback are detrimental in the achievement of EFL learners speaking performance

Abstract

English Environment Programs is one of method In Improving Speaking Ability At Polytechnic of National Informatics. This research aims at finding out wheather or not the use of English environment Programs improve the speaking ability. This research used Quasy experimental method with two group pre-test and post-test design. The result of the data analysis showed that the degree of freedom (df) was 43 (n1 + n2 – 2) where n1 = 30 and n2 = 15 so 30 + 15 – 2 = 43), the level of significant (α) = 0.05, the t-test value of students’ speaking ability= 3.765, and the t-table value = 2.021. The t-test value is greater than the t-table value (3.765 > 2.021), this showed that there is a significant difference of improvement between the Control group and Experimental Group. It means that the Alternative Hypothesis (H1) is accepted while the Null Hypothesis (H0) rejected. Based on the result above, the researcher concluded that the using of English Environment Programs can improve the speaking ability of the second year students of Polytechnic of National Informatics

Abstract

This study explores the interplay of adult EFL learners’ reading ability and the universality of schema theory. The conceptual relationship between the two aspects are discussed in an attempt to provide better understanding of why this study is essential for Second Language Acquisition (SLA) audience, both the practitioners and the researchers. Content-based Instruction (CBI) and Traditional Instruction (TI) materials are applied to six groups of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) adult learners comprising Agriculture, Engineering and Economic classes which accommodate 25-27 students each. Utilizing classroom observation, the study reveals detail interactions which occur during the teaching and learning processes. The activation of schemata or background knowledge during the process of learning, specifically, reading skills is clearly shown in the CBI classes while such cognitive process does not seem to occur in the implementation of Traditional Instruction (TI) material. This leaves a substantial recommendation for future researchers and practitioners of SLA to incorporate schema theory in whatever design they are pursuing in relation to developing teaching instructions for Reading skills.

Abstract

Intelligence is one of psychological factors which affect the speaking proficiency. Therefore, this study aims at finding out whether or not there is a significant correlation between students’ intelligence and their speaking skills. With regard to the methodology applied in this study, a correlation research was used to determine whether, and to what degree, a relationship exists between two or more quantifiable variables in form of quantitative method. Purposive sampling was used in the correlational research due to the assumption that the selected students were able to give information or data in relation to the research problems based on the research design. Thus, 40 students were chosen as the samples. The study was conducted at the first-year students of SMA Negeri 2 Makassar. Moreover, the quantifiable data were obtained from speaking test based on the Heaton assessment and intelligence test based on the Barret assessment which were distributed to the students. The data were then analyzed by Pearson product moment. The findings showed that there was a significant correlation between students’ intelligence and their speaking skills in degree of high correlation. In other words, the assumption views that the higher intelligence belongs to students the better ability they speak.

Abstract

This research aims at finding out the use of Digital Language Learning better than the Traditional Language Learning to enrich the Adult EFL learners' schema in developing their speaking ability. This research also aimed at scrutinizing how the finding of Digital Learning Learning (DLL) challenges the theory of schema for adult EFL learners and exploring the learner's attitude. This research used a quasi-experimental research design. The samples of this research were the third-semester students of Universitas Sulawesi Barat which belonged to two groups; the experimental group and the control group. The research data were collected using two kinds of instruments; the speaking test and the questionnaire given to both groups. The research results indicated that: (1) the Digital Language Learning can significantly improve the learners' schema in developing the speaking ability than Traditional Language Learning. (2) This research disclosed some Digital Language Learning features namely knowledge sharing, active and collaborative learning, learner-centered, activity, and networking. Those features are the digital language learning better than Traditional Language Learning to enrich adult EFL learners in developing their speaking ability. (3)  Most of them agreed that the Digital Language Learning better than the Traditional Language Learning enriches the learners' schema in developing speaking ability. Of most significant importance, this research's novelty contributes to the schema theory that digital language learning better than traditional language learning, particularly interactivity and networking.

Abstract

This study aims to know the effect of motivation and anxiety on students’ speaking performance: a study at Dayanu Ikhsanuddin University. The study was designed in the form of quantitative and qualitative descriptive studies (mixed methods). Subjects in this study were the 5th semester students of the teaching and education study program in Dayanu Ikhsanuddin University who took the speaking class as part of their courses. The data were collected by using the methods of observation, interviews, and questionairre. Data were analyzed through triangulation data. The results showed that language anxiety felt by students during their speaking presentation in English might result in their inability to deliver ideas clearly and this would have a negative impact on their performance. In contrast, langauge  motivation  during  speaking presentation would help students to feel less anxious and be more concentrated on the task and would result in a better speaking performance.

Abstract

In this research, the researchers convince the readers about factors that affecting the effectiveness of Inter-dialectical accommodation among sellers-buyers. In this research, they prove how the theory of Giles cannot cover the discourse among sellers and buyers in terms of accommodation,   which is done in Central Lombok Nusa Tenggara Barat Province. The researchers describe the phenomenon of the inter-dialectical accommodation in the dialect of Meno-mene versus Meriak-meriku. The object of this research is the activities of sellers-buyers in doing the transaction in the market. The data in this research is taken through observation, recording, interview and note taking of the accommodation among sellers and buyers discourse in some markets in Praya Barat, Praya and Jonggat Sub-district. The researchers use the interpretative qualitative method with some data to reflect the condition of sellers versus buyers discourse in the market. The researchers find the preliminary data shows that the Giles Convergence Theory is un-effective or not applicable in the market where sellers and buyers of Meno-mene versus Meriak-meriku assemble and do a transaction. However, the research result shows the un-effectiveness or there is no effect of converging in bargaining. This research reveals that the convergence theory by Giles cannot be generalized into all part of the discourse, especially in the dialect of Meno-mene versus Meriak-meriku.
