Abstract

This study focused to analyze the effects of the Great Depression on the main character in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, especially on how he tried to survive, whether he succeeded or not, and the effects on his life and family. In analyzing the study, the writers used sociological and historical points of view. The writers also used the qualitative method in analyzing this study. Data were collected by doing library research. The main data were derived from the work, while the supporting data were derived from sources such as English literature journals, e-books, and other sources. The collected data were classified and analyzed before they were presented in an article. The writers used sociological and historical approaches to see the social and historical background of the play. From this study, the writers found out that Willy Loman was affected badly by the Great Depression in which he experienced difficulties both in his career as a salesman and in his life. The Great Depression had been his obstacle in gaining his dream of being a successful salesman; and having a happier, fuller, and richer family. His failure brought a serious effect that he liked to withdraw himself from the real world and lived in his illusion. The worst effect was that he could not face reality and committed suicide.

Abstract

This study examines and describes the relationship between TOEFL preparation Program and Students; language performance. The study also examines the program's effect on students' TOEFL scores improvement. Using spss v.22 in analyzing the data, the researcher employed three groups of students consisting of 15 students, namely the control group, treatment 1 group, and the treatment two groups. Thus, descriptive statistics present verifiable data in numerical form, which uses statistical procedures to tabulate, describe, reflect, and summarize data properties. The two variables data examined, TOEFL paper-based testing score and FCE Cambridge speaking test score, are the focus of the research, free from context generalization of the phenomenon. The result is presented statistically using quantitative methodology. The control group was not exposed to any treatment, while 1 group was given basic general English lessons, and the treatment 2 group was trained using the specially designed TOEFL preparation course. The study result shows significant effects on the improvement of TOEFL score on the treatment 1 group's pre-test mean, the standard of deviation, and the standard error mean were 350.07, 22.745, and 5.873, respectively. The treatment 2 group's mean, the standard of deviation, and the standard error mean were 355.40, 20.117, and 5.194, respectively, and the treatment 1 group' post-test mean, the standard of deviation, and the standard error mean were 387.27, 35.204, and 9.090, respectively. The treatment 2 group's mean, standard of deviation, and standard error mean were 436.87, 44.912, and 6.925, respectively. However, the study result shows that the correlation p-value = .083 indicates no significant correlation between TOEFL Preparation students' language performance.

Abstract

In learning English, we must apply appropriate technique to mastery it. One of the technique used is memorizing vocabulary. The more vocabulary we memorize, the easier it will be for us to use the language in communicating. But not only memorization technique can improve our language learning but there are still many methods that we can use depending on how the learning or learning model is suitable for those learners. But in fact, based on the observations of researchers at SMP Negeri 2 Parepare, researchers found several problems in students' vocabulary mastery. One of the problems is the students still do not know various kinds of vocabulary such as adjectives, nouns, verbs and adverb, and how to arrange them in a sentence. In this study, the researchers applied a mixed method with a one group class pretest and posttest design. The researchers took one class as a sample where the number of students was thirty students. The results of data analysis showed that the memorization technique provided positive impacts on students’ English vocabulary. This is evidenced by the N-Gain test that aimed to see the effect of the treatment given, showing that there are four students in the high category, there are nineteen students in the currently/medium category, and there are seventeen students in the low category. In addition, the most of students responded memorization technique positively. It can be said that through the memorization technique, it can improve the vocabulary mastery of students at SMP Negeri 2 Parepare.

Abstract

Listening has been widely recognized, viewed and explored as a theoretical foundation in the realm of language research. Considerable amount of papers found listening self-efficacy in EFL classroom is still a challenging issue. This paper attempted to explore listening self-efficacy of 42 EFL students who enrolled in listening class. The data were collected through 18 self-rated items questionnaire using 5-point Likert-type scale and than measured and analyzed individually before presented them differently in percentage The finding revealed that student’s self-efficacy toward listening skill in direct listening was 39 out of 42 students (92%) were categorized as high self-efficacy while 3 out of 42 students (7%) students were categorized as moderate self-efficacy and students’ self-efficacy in their abilities in complex listening was 75% while self-efficacy on their abilities in dialects listening was 70%. Students with higher self-efficacy posessed higher capabilities in orginizing their materials in a way better performance, more well-prepared before the class started and likely more actively engaged in various classroom activities. In the other hand, one’s with moderate or lower self-efficacy was reflected through less less contribution, encountering difficulties using emotional reactions, approaching difficult tasks as threats to be avoided and being discouraged. Verbal persuasions, observing role model performances, and positive experiences of task accomplishments were a few of most common of student’s source of self-efficcy. Abstract

Abstract This paper addresses the issue of municipal disposal, management, and its effect on Nigerians, and proposes municipal as a theme to Nollywood. The issue of improper solid waste (municipal) disposal and management and its effect on humans and the environment has been a subject of scholarly discussion for a very long time and in world the cinema. In Nigeria, the electronic media especially news bulletins present issues of improper waste disposal and its impact on community dwellers. However, there is yet a full-length feature film in Nigeria that deals primarily with the issue of municipals. Nollywood has over the years treated themes of varied identities such as prostitution, banditry, politics, and communal insecurity. However, it is pertinent to note that the most prominent studies on Nollywood films are on national identity and culture(s). There are nonetheless few studies on the culture of environmentalism or ecocriticism and health and illnesses in Nigerian films. The need for Filmmakers (practitioners) and scholars to do further studies into the field of solid waste identity (municipal) is indeed necessary. Therefore, in this paper, I reviewed materials on municipals, and films that treated issues revolving around municipals (garbage, rubbish, discards, junk) and their implications on humans and the environment in some films.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research discusses the relationship between code-mixing written in the selected news headlines and headings; and the identities of the reporter at the Twitter account @catchmeupid. This paper attempts to examine 1) the types and motives of the @catchmeupid reporter in implementing code-mixing and 2) what kinds of identities he wants to portray. The code-mixing is collected with the documentation technique from news about a murder case committed by Ferdy Sambo. The research found 46 instances of 38 headings and 8 headlines from the news. The data were in the form of words, phrases, and sentences. The code-mixing is analyzed by the framework of Muysken for the types, Ritchie and Bhatia’s for the motives, and Fairclough’s text analysis for the identities. The results revealed that the salient processes of code-mixing types are insertion (29 instances) and alternation (17 instances), with no data for congruent lexicalization. The motives for code-mixing are the reporter’s awareness of their target audience, the willingness of the reporter to set an informal interaction with the target audience, the reporter’s emphasis on message-intrinsic considerations by using reiterations, interjections, and an idiom; and the reporter’s positive attitude in using the combination of Indonesian and English language. As for the identities, there are two identities demonstrated by @catchmeupid. Firstly, it is an identity as a news reader. @catchmeupid wants to be identified as the millennial/Z Generation who is familiar with English and as an ordinary citizen who is critical and interested in the settlement of the Ferdy Sambo case. Secondly, the identity as a news reporter who was knowledgeable and persuasive; and had an equal position to the other parties referred to in the news texts. Overall results indicated that the use of code-mixing by @catchmeupid’s reporter was related to the identities they wanted to portray.

Abstract

This research note has two objectives. One is to concisely explain a theoretical discourse which the Japanese philosopher Hitoshi Imamura propounds in the first part of his article titled “Studying Economy: Make the Drive for Meaning our Primum Mobile”. The other is, by expanding Imamura’s ideas, to derive insights beneficial to the contemporary era. To achieve them, the discussion employs explicative reading as its method and develops as follows. After an introduction mentioning a previous study on Imamura’s thought, the first section dissects Imamura’s line of reasoning and demonstrates that Imamura essentially advances the following thesis: A human is a being that is unable to be content with the world as it is and inevitably and constantly looks for a (concealed) meaning. The second section explicates Imamura’s observations which relate to the proposition and whose potentialities Imamura does not fully exploit. Thereupon, it concludes that, by acknowledging that each individual lives in a unique network of meanings but that the meanings are correctable, we can amend the present world some have qualified as “post-truth”
