Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate the online task-based language teaching (TBLT) and face-to-face learning affects EFL learners' writing performance and attitude. The study focused on the application TBLT in teaching writing using two methods: online learning with SIKOLA platform and face-to-face learning which had only recently been developed. This research used mixed-methods. This study included one class of twenty-four undergraduate students (aged 19-21). Students were asked to complete the tasks online and face-to-face using the LMS SIKOLA, which has been used throughout the semesters at the university. The study discovered that students had positive attitudes toward the use of online task-based language teaching in terms of providing better drafts and revision. The study also discovered that there was a strong understanding of the procedures for carrying out the task-based assessments. In other words, they found out themselves that these methods can improve their performance in writing such as writing better drafts and revisions. The findings will help EFL students understand the procedures of online TBLT and face-to-face TBLT strategies in writing classes. Learners are encouraged to actively participate in both online and face-to-face learning discussions.

Abstract

Socio-pragmatic competency is related to the ability of people to use language in accordance with certain social contexts or certain social conditions. The various use of honorific forms and the variation of “self” and “other” reference forms become a very important instrument in maintaining politeness as an aspect of socio-pragmatic. Those variations show the socio-pragmatic aspect of the participants involved. This paper aims to examine the use of various pronouns among the member of one neighborhood community in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan. The methodology of this study is descriptive, corpus-based study by collecting data from WhatsApp group conversations and conducting analysis using AntConc tools. The focus of the paper is to examine the pronoun variations of “self” and “other” references including the choice of pronoun code-switching. Although in Balikpapan, colloquial Indonesian is used in daily conversation, for politeness and intimacy, the code-switching of pronouns is observed. Thus, other than Indonesian common pronouns, the other pronoun used is the Javanese pronoun first person singular (kulo) “I/me/my” and Banjarese “ulun”. Furthermore, the honorific address of Pak Haji (given to a person who has conducted a Hajj pilgrimage from Mecca) is found and is used as second-person and third-person singular pronouns. Then, there is also “Pak RT” (The chief of the community association) that is addressed using the term to refer to him, both as a second-person and third-person pronoun. These extensive variations and code-switching of pronouns observed in a small neighborhood show that pronoun variations and pronouns code-switching is an important tool in everyday conversation to maintain intimacy and politeness to achieve a harmonious living in a heterogeneous society.

Abstract

This paper finds the students’ perception students English learning strategies in dealing with Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) curriculum in Indonesia with the research questions: (1) How do students perceive English learning strategies in the current MBKM curriculum change? and (2) What are the supporting factors faced by students in learning English in the current MBKM curriculum change? This study was conducted among all students of the English Education Study Program, Universitas Negeri Makassar, Indonesia in the second, fourth and sixth semesters. From the number of even semester students for the 2021/2022 academic year, which amounted to approximately 500 students, 122 students sent back the results of questions given online. The data obtained from the questionnaire about the student’s perception of the implementation of English learning strategies in the current curriculum change were scored by using the Likert scale. The scoring system was done positively and negatively. The data was analyzed by using percentages. It aimed to measure the respondents’ opinions. Then, to interpret the students’ interest responses, the researchers used the interval estimate. The interval estimation was used to measure the parameter of population based on the score of rates interval sample data and ranged to 5 categories level. The result found that students had a positive perception of English learning strategies in the current curriculum change. This is evidenced by the average student perception score of 68.48 which means it is in a positive category according to the range of perception scores. Therefore, students have a positive attitude to deal with curriculum changes in every era. There were no students who stated very negative statements about the use of learning strategies in the era of curriculum change, there was only 1 student (0.82%) who was very positive. 23 students were hesitant to get a score in the 50-64 interval, and 98 students (80.33%) were in the positive category in the 65-80 interval. Many factors influence students' English learning strategies before and during the Covid-19 Pandemic era. The factors come from students, lecturers, school, environment, learning process and materials conditions.

The purpose of this study is to describe the characteristics of the main character, to describe the form of fulfillment of needs as the main character's self-actualization process, and to describe the self-actualization characteristics contained in the main character. This study uses Abraham Maslow's theory of humanistic psychology. The research method used is descriptive qualitative method. The data were obtained from the text in the novel Sesuk by Tere Liye, data from literature studies using heuristic reading techniques. Data analysis was performed by using hermeneutic reading techniques. The fulfillment of the need for security is shown by other characters who look after the girl so that she feels safe. The need for love and belonging is demonstrated by the girl character getting love from the people around her. The need for self-esteem and appreciation is shown by those who try to maintain their self-esteem and parents and people around them who give awards in the form of appreciation to them. The need for actualization is shown through the return of the girl's family to become a complete and harmonious family.

Abstract

The notion of colour has been an interesting yet controversial topic especially in the field of linguistics. Some scholars (Berlin and Kay, 1969) argued that every human being should have an insight of the basic colour terms as the universal inventory since the beginning. While other scholar (Wierzbicka, 1996) argued that rather than the colour concept as an inherent nature, it should be a dependant nature in which its terms was emerged because of what have been seen before. This long debate over the colour concept ties to a phenomenon that occurs in one of the indigenous languages in the Eastern part of Indonesia, namely Pelauw. This language apparently does not have any colour terms in its vocabulary as all the words for colour found in this language are borrowed from Bahasa Indonesia. To investigate this strange phenomenon, therefore, this paper will aim to examine the absence of colour concept in Pelauw language, and to use Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) approach (Goddard and Wierzbicka, 2014) for analyzing the terms ‘manggahina’ and ‘mete’ which are somehow used to address white and black colours, respectively. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods to explain the phenomenon under study using NSM, which in this case, the absence of colour concept in Pelauw language. The results show that colour concept is not something which universally exists to begin with, instead, it is just a result of what have been seen through the vision that visualised and emerged as the colour terms. It is attested through the analysis of terms ‘manggahina’ and ‘mete’ using NSM which concludes that these terms are rather a visual descriptor than a colour concept.
