Abstract

This study investigates the influence of oral and written feedback on writing apprehension among introvert and extrovert EFL students using a 2 x 2 factorial design. A total of 108 university students, 47 introverts and 61 extroverts identified using the Eysenck Personality Inventory, participated in the study. Writing apprehension was measured using a validated questionnaire after students received both oral and written feedback during writing instruction. Paired samples t-tests revealed that introvert students experienced significantly higher writing apprehension when receiving oral feedback (t = 6.82, p < .001), while extrovert students reported significantly higher apprehension with written feedback (t = 4.23, p < .001). Two-way ANOVA results revealed significant main effects of personality type (F = 10.321, p = .002) and feedback mode (F = 5.921, p = .027). Importantly, a significant interaction effect was also found between personality type and feedback mode (F = 10.567, p = .002), indicating that students’ responses to feedback varied depending on their personality. Specifically, introvert students reported greater writing apprehension with oral feedback, whereas extrovert students experienced more apprehension with written feedback. These findings underscore the importance of adapting feedback strategies to individual learner characteristics. Tailoring feedback to align with students’ personality traits can help reduce writing apprehension and enhance instructional effectiveness in EFL writing classrooms.

Abstract

This study aims to  investigates the preferences of junior high school students concerning printed versus digital English learning resources at MTsN Makassar. The research included 120 students from Grade IX who completed a structured questionnaire, along with 10 individuals in semi-structured interviews. In the process of data analysis, we employed descriptive and inferential statistical techniques for quantitative data, while qualitative responses underwent thematic evaluation. The research shows that scholars have a distinct liking for electronic learning content (M = 4.04, SD = 0.7) as opposed to their printed resources (M = 3.19, SD = 0.8). Students noted that characteristics like accessibility, interactivity, and engagement serve as important advantages of digital resources, while printed materials were credited with enhancing concentration and readability. Independent samples t-tests revealed no significant differences based on gender (p > .05); however, students with access to digital devices at home exhibited a significantly higher preference for digital formats (p = .040). The thematic analysis revealed three primary themes: (1) the engagement with digital media and the enjoyment it provides, (2) the motivation derived from easy access and constructive feedback, and (3) the essential task of aligning resource allocation with emerging challenges. Studies suggest that applying mixed learning techniques, combining internet-based and physical resources, can facilitate inclusiveness, amplify student interest, and improve the thoroughness of educational experiences in English Language Teaching (ELT).

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of Structured Visual Mapping as a prewriting strategy to enhance the narrative writing quality of senior high school EFL learners in Indonesia. Many students face challenges in developing ideas, organizing narrative elements, and applying appropriate vocabulary and grammar when composing narrative texts. Using a quasi-experimental design, 60 eleventh-grade students from SMA Negeri 1 Marioriwawo were divided into an experimental group taught using Structured Visual Mapping and a control group taught through conventional instruction. Pretests and posttests were administered, and students’ writing performance was assessed using the ESL Composition Profile. The results show that the experimental group achieved significantly higher improvement across all five writing components, with a mean gain of 9.3 compared to 1.9 in the control group. The posttest t-test value (t = 2.024 > 2.000) confirmed that the intervention had a significant effect on students’ writing performance. These findings indicate that Structured Visual Mapping effectively supports students in generating ideas, sequencing narrative structure, and improving lexical and grammatical accuracy. This study recommends integrating Structured Visual Mapping into narrative writing instruction and suggests further exploration of its application in other writing genres or digital learning contexts.

Abstract

This study explores how Yemeni undergraduate students translate Hadhrami dialectal expressions into English and examines the extent to which their translations preserve the original cultural meaning. A qualitative descriptive design supported by quantitative analysis was employed to identify students’ translation strategies and the challenges they encountered. Forty-four translation students from several Yemeni universities completed a validated test containing twenty Hadhrami expressions. The findings revealed that students primarily relied on literal translation and dynamic equivalence, while cultural substitution and paraphrasing were used less frequently. Many translations did not fully convey the intended cultural and figurative meanings of the source expressions. The study also found that linguistic, cultural, and strategic factors interacted to hinder accurate and contextually appropriate translation. These results highlight the importance of integrating cultural competence, dialect awareness, and strategy-based instruction in translation pedagogy to help students manage culturally bound dialectical expressions more effectively.

Abstract

This study analyzed the supervisory function of the Environmental Agency of Makassar City in controlling environmental pollution caused by single-use plastic waste. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research explored four key dimensions of supervision based on Terry’s control theory: standard setting, monitoring and evaluation, result comparison, and corrective actions. The findings showed that although the agency had a clear legal foundation through Mayor Regulation No. 21 of 2023 on the prohibition of plastic bags, operational standards and measurable performance indicators were not fully developed. Monitoring and evaluation were conducted only once a year, which limited the agency’s ability to capture variations in business compliance. The study also revealed that several business entities continued to violate the regulation, as evidenced by the issuance of warning letters. This indicated that the targets of plastic reduction had not been optimally achieved. Corrective actions remained limited to administrative warnings without structured follow-up mechanisms or tiered sanctions, which reduced their deterrent effect. Overall, the supervision function had been initiated but was not yet effective in ensuring consistent compliance and reducing single-use plastic waste. Strengthening operational standards, increasing monitoring frequency, improving data-based evaluation, and enforcing tiered sanctions were required to enhance environmental protection efforts in Makassar City.

Abstract

This study employed a Convergent Parallel Mixed-Methods design to investigate the effectiveness of Digital Project-Based Learning (DPBL) in enhancing Business English Communication (BEC) outcomes for 15 E-Tourism students (N=15) following a 12-week intervention. Quantitative results showed high agreement on Authenticity (=4.60) and Digital Proficiency (=4.53), alongside significant perceived gains in oral (=4.13) and written (=3.93) communication skills. Qualitative data confirmed DPBL acted as a rapid "hack" for skill acquisition, specifically boosting Confidence in Presentation and Professional Email Tone through constant, situated digital communication. The convergence of findings confirms that DPBL, by integrating authentic digital tools into project tasks, is a highly effective and potent pedagogical model for accelerating the development of critical BEC skills required in the E-Tourism sector for students at a Private Collage in South - Sulawesi

Abstract

Language acquisition inherently requires intercultural competence, yet understanding implicit foreign cultural nuances remains a challenge for learners. This study aims to describe the application of international product advertisements as intercultural learning media and to analyze students' understanding and responses regarding their utilization. The research employed a quantitative descriptive method with a pre-experimental One-Shot Case Study design. The participants were 31 fourth-semester students of the French Language Education Study Program. The treatment involved analyzing Toyota advertisements adapted for Indonesia and France to examine cultural contrasts within the 'savoirs' framework. Data were collected using knowledge tests and response questionnaires. The results demonstrated that the application of international product advertisements was highly effective. Cognitively, students achieved a satisfactory mean score of 80.26, attaining 100% classical mastery based on standard criteria. Students successfully identified that the Indonesian advertisement reflected broad social realities and collectivism, while the French advertisement emphasized national identity and individualism. Affectively, the media received a positive reception, with 80.6% of students responding "Strongly Agree" regarding its effectiveness. The study concludes that international advertisements are powerful, authentic tools that visualize abstract cultural concepts into concrete learning experiences, thereby significantly enhancing students' intercultural competence.

Abstract

This study examines multicultural communication politeness strategies in online interactions of WhatsApp Group boarding female students in Tamanan, Yogyakarta. This research uses the theory of politeness from Brown & Levinson and intercultural pragmatics from Kecskes. The method used in this research is qualitative. The object of this research is the chat in the WhatsApp Group in 2024-2025. The results show that, first, the dominant politeness strategy is negative politeness with a percentage of 42.86%, positive politeness with a percentage of 31.43%, off record with a percentage of 14.29%, and bald-on record with a percentage of 11.43%. The findings show that speakers always package reprimands, requests, and orders with politeness substrategies such as apologies, the use of the word please, solidarity markers, indirectness, giving reasons, and innuendo. Second, the power factor lies with the boarding owner, so the boarders must be more polite. The distance between the owner and boarders is close, while the distance between boarders is quite close; it is influenced by direct interaction, social status, and gender. Ranking of imposition is always played with greetings, apologies/help, core speech, and reasons. Third, CCG is diverse but still prioritises politeness, thus creating an ECG that regulates new habits. Different egocentrism, but the same style of polite speech, so that it can be accepted together (cooperation). Then, hybrid norms that are inclusive strengthen solidarity and cooperation. Despite coming from different cultural backgrounds, the speakers still prioritise Indonesian society's general politeness, which is indirect, collective, and accommodating to Javanese culture.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate students’ competence in using transitive and intransitive verbs in simple English sentences and to identify the types of errors commonly made by students. A quantitative descriptive research design was employed, using multiple-choice and essay tests as research instruments. The participants were 30 third-semester students of Class A from the English Language Education Study Program, Khairun University. The findings revealed that the average student score was 69.17, which falls within the “Enough” or medium competence category. The results also indicated that students demonstrated better mastery of transitive verbs compared to intransitive verbs. The most frequent errors involved the use of inappropriate objects after intransitive verbs and confusion in distinguishing verbs that can function as both transitive and intransitive. A comparative analysis between the two test formats showed that students performed better in essay tests than in multiple-choice tests, with 63.3% of students achieving a “Very Good” category in applying verbs in contextual sentences. These findings highlight the need for focused instructional strategies to enhance grammatical competence, particularly in understanding and applying verb types accurately in sentence construction. The study contributes to the broader understanding of English grammar acquisition among EFL learners and provides insights for curriculum improvement in language education programs.

Abstract

This study investigates the realisation of Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness strategies in the short story Thariqun ila Al-hub by Mahmud Taymur, focusing on how characters’ utterances reflect the four main strategies: bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected from the original Arabic text through careful reading and note-taking, followed by translation into Indonesian for analysis. The findings reveal that, out of 17 identified utterances, positive politeness is the most dominant strategy (47%), followed by negative politeness (24%), bald on record (18%), and off record (12%). The distribution varies across characters: some predominantly employ positive politeness to foster solidarity and closeness, while others rely on negative politeness to preserve distance and minimise face threats, and a few opt for directness (bald on record). These findings show that language politeness strategies not only serve to maintain social harmony but also serve as a means of expressing something, both in literary works and in real life.
