Abstract

This basic research was conducted to determine the challenges of teachers in the implementation of modular distance learning in the new normal of the public elementary and secondary schools in the District of Gitagum, Division of Misamis Oriental. Specifically, it sought to: a) describe the characteristics of the respondents; b) determine the challenges encountered by the teachers in terms of accessibility, availability of resources, support to learners, teachers’ competence and teaching strategies, assessment, and health and safety measures; c) determine the significant relationship between the respondents’ challenges and their characteristics;  and d) come up with an intervention plan based on the results of the study. The respondents of the study were the one hundred five (144) public school teachers in the  District of Gitagum, Division of Misamis Oriental. A researcher-made survey questionnaire was employed to obtain specific information about the study. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counting of data, percentage, mean and standard deviation. Pearson Product Moment of Correlation was employed to test the significant relationship between the respondent’s challenges and their characteristics. An intervention plan was designed to help teachers in finding solutions to the challenges they are facing in the implementation of modular distance learning. The teachers’ challenges were low in the implementation of modular distance learning. It suggests that teachers faced few challenges or that the challenges they encountered were of low intensity. In other words, it implies that teachers found it relatively manageable to implement modular distance learning, and the difficulties they encountered were not severe. Teachers’ challenges were significant to sex, position, teaching experience and attitudes towards modular distance learning in the new normal. It is recommended that teachers seek support from stakeholders and the local government to acquire funds for better implementation.

Abstract

Morphology is a branch of linguistics that deals with the internal structure of words, and how it formed. This branch of linguistics has a very wide reach so that many aspects can be traced to obtain accurate information. Among these aspects is the aspect of forming Indonesian nouns. Although this aspect has been researched, there is still room for more interesting research. The aspect of formation of Indonesian nouns can still be further investigated by looking at a more specific aspect, namely the rules for forming reduplication nouns using a generative morphology review. This research aims to describe: (1) The process of forming Indonesian reduplicated nouns, (2) The rules for forming Indonesian reduplicated nouns, (3) The morphological and morphophonemic processes that occur in the formation of Indonesian reduplicated nouns, and (4) the original representation and birth representation in the formation of Indonesian reduplication nouns. So, this research attempts to formulate rules for forming reduplication nouns without being designed using statistical procedures. Therefore, this research used qualitative method. The population of this research is the competence of native Indonesian speakers as a whole. The analysis is carried out with a structured work step, which starts with identifying all duplicate Indonesian nouns. The identified reduplication nouns are then classified. The next work step is to formulate a set of rules for forming reduplication nouns. Through the results of the formulation, the original representation is obtained. After the initial representation has gone through a morphological or morphophonemic process as a filter, it arrives at the birth representation. The results of this research show that not all processes of forming reduplication nouns have to go through a filter. Reduplicated nouns that must pass through the filter are only those that are repeated in their entirety. This noun repeated in its entirety expresses the meaning of 'a lot of X'. The reduplication nouns that are not repeated in full must go through a filter to arrive at an acceptable form of reduplication nouns. The filter can be a morphomorphic process or a morphological process. In terms of meaning, apart from showing a plural meaning, there are also reduplication noun constructions that show a single meaning even though they have gone through a reduplication process.

Abstract

This study examined the interactional metadiscourse devices and the correlation with gender in personal essays. The data was taken from 20 essays, 10 essays from each respective genders which are published by Chicken Soup for the Soul in several editions. Tokens of interactional metadiscourse devices were obtained by using corpus software Antconc 3.5.9. The occurrence then underwent qualitative examination to sort only items used as interactional devices based on interactional metadiscourse taxonomy proposed by Hyland. This feature have been widely used to identify the interaction and meaning-making in many persuasive and academic writings as well as talks such as TED talks. To fill the gap, this study aimed to see the differences of interactional metadiscourse devices usage by women and men in personal essays. The result shows that women use more interactional discourse markers than men except for hedges category. In general, women use more interactional discourse in personal essays to express themselves and to let their readers feel being engaged in the story through emotive connections. Whereas, men write their stories more directly and attract the reader on the sequence of events.

Abstract

This study is driven by the dual objectives of comprehensively identifying and elucidating the diverse manifestations of violence against children within Ruwi Meita's novel "Misteri Bilik Korek Api" (The Mystery of the Matchbox Room). The selection of the theme of violence stems from the novel's portrayal of acts of violence directed towards children. To undertake a comprehensive analysis of these instances, this research employs a literary psychology approach, augmented by the conceptual framework provided by Azevedo and Viviane's typology of five distinct forms of violence. Employing a qualitative methodology, the study delves into the intricate fabric of the prose, facilitating an in-depth exploration and interpretation of the textual data. The outcomes of this inquiry illuminate five primary forms of violence that children undergo within the novel's narrative canvas: Indifference: Evidencing scenarios in which characters display an unsettling apathy towards the well-being of children. Contempt: Unveiling instances of disdain or disrespect aimed at children from other characters. Isolation: Illuminating instances where children are deliberately secluded or isolated from their social milieu. Rejection: Disclosing portrayals of children confronting exclusion or repudiation across various spheres of their existence. Terror: Exposing moments of intense fear and apprehension experienced by children as a result of threatening circumstances or actions.

Abstract

Today, in higher education, at the university level, the learning process is still evolving. The objective of this study was describe how to use local role-playing activities for interpersonal communication among students, especially those who have completed semester 5, in order to improve their language skills. In this way, knowledge can explicitly test the order of the function studied and explored by students to help them understand the concept of learning. The study design uses a quantitative survey as the approach, while observation and questionnaire are for data collection. The results show that the local history role-playing method is effective in building interpersonal communication, especially for the 5th-grade English curriculum. A local drama using the “Topekkong Agreement” was indicated where students always express their ideas which the listener can understand and then give feedback or response. So, this method could improve students' English skills. This study recommends that further research is needed to develop methods, especially building interpersonal communication by using a local history drama approach.

Abstract

Beyond the traditional import of language which is for communicative purpose and information sharing, its usefulness cuts across other strands such as for expression of one ideology or others, representation and identification of self and other social groups among others, especially within the political context. Previous linguistic studies on political discourse with emphasis on (intra party) electioneering campaign speeches have invested on the nexus between language and politics. Such studies, however, have not exteriorised expressions of ideologies in Emi lokan, Yoruba lokan campaign slogan of Bola Tinubu in the build-up to 2023 Nigeria’s presidential election. This study, consequently, studies the differing ideologies expressed in the Emi lokan, Yoruba lokan speech made by the All Progressive Congress’ presidential aspirant in the build-to the party’s 2023 presidential primary election. The data for the study is audio-visual of the speech obtained from the YouTube platform, which was rendered in the mixture of English and Yoruba languages, given the nature of the audience where the speech was made. The translated video was transcribed into MS Word. The selected excerpts were subjected to Critical Discourse Analysis, borrowing insight from van Dijk’s (2006) socio-cognitive model. The findings reveal that supremacist, collectivist, welfarist and ethnocentric ideologies are embedded in Bola Tinubu’s emi lokan slogan/speech which are indexed through certain discursive moves.

Abstract

The practice of simultaneous interpreting presents complex challenges due to its immediate nature and the need for prompt responses. Simultaneous interpreters are required to perform their tasks immediately in order to match the speaker’s pace. This may lead to information overload and difficulties in dealing with complex sentence structures or specialized terminology. In order to overcome the challenges encountered in simultaneous interpreting, interpreters employ a range of interpreting strategies. This study aims to investigate the strategies applied by a professional interpreter in the YouTube video entitled “Simultaneous Interpreting Example”. Qualitative method was applied in this study and the data was collected through observation and note-taking. The data was analyzed by applying the theory of interpreting strategies proposed by Li (2015). The result of the study revealed that there were six interpreting strategies employed by the interpreter in the video, namely addition, paraphrasing, compression, omission, segmentation, and restructuring. Addition is the most dominant strategy applied, followed by paraphrasing, and compression. These strategies enabled the interpreter to adapt to distinct language structures, improve audience comprehension, and efficiently convey complex ideas in cross-linguistic communication.
