Abstract

This study investigates the construction of linguistic agency and emotional expression in Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë through a corpus-assisted stylistic approach. The research aims to examine how syntactic structures, modality, pronoun usage, and emotional vocabulary reflect the protagonist’s psychological transformation and evolving identity throughout the narrative. The study employs a qualitative descriptive design supported by corpus-assisted analysis within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The corpus was constructed from the complete text of the novel, consisting of approximately 183,000 words, from which 450 linguistic units and 1,248 clauses were purposively selected and analyzed across three narrative phases: childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. The findings reveal a significant shift from passive to active constructions, indicating the development of linguistic agency and self-determination. The analysis of modality demonstrates an increasing use of volitional expressions such as will and shall, reflecting stronger interpersonal authority and autonomy. Furthermore, the emotional lexicon evolves from expressions associated with fear, sorrow, and repression toward vocabulary emphasizing freedom, hope, independence, and self-worth. These findings suggest that language functions as an important mechanism for the construction of identity, agency, and emotional transformation within literary discourse. The study also highlights the pedagogical relevance of corpus-assisted literary analysis in English Language Teaching (ELT), particularly in fostering students’ linguistic awareness and critical interpretation of literary texts.

Abstract

Audio-visual instructional methods have become increasingly important in enhancing language learning and comprehension skills in schools. However, limited studies have examined their effectiveness in improving English comprehension skills among public senior secondary school students in Kakamega County, Kenya. This study investigated the influence of educational videos and audio recordings on learners’ listening and reading comprehension skills, while also examining the role of teacher ICT competence and availability of audio-visual resources. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design targeting English teachers and students in public senior secondary schools in Kakamega County. Data were collected using questionnaires, interviews, and observation checklists and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that educational videos and audio recordings positively improved learners’ English comprehension skills. Teacher ICT competence and the availability of audio-visual resources further enhanced the effectiveness of these instructional methods. The study concludes that audio-visual instructional methods significantly improve English comprehension skills among secondary school learners. The study contributes to existing knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of audio-visual instructional methods within the Kenyan secondary school context. It recommends increased investment in ICT infrastructure, teacher digital training, and provision of adequate audio-visual instructional resources to enhance English language instruction and learner performance.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the multiculturalism content in the Édito 1 textbook and its contribution in supporting the strengthening of the character of beginning French language students. The study uses a qualitative approach with a content analysis method. The research data are in the form of text, images, and audio and video transcripts contained in the Édito 1 book. Data collection techniques are carried out through documentation, while data analysis is based on indicators of multiculturalism values which include learning to live in differences, building mutual trust, maintaining mutual understanding, upholding mutual respect, open-mindedness, appreciation and interdependence, and conflict resolution and non-violent reconciliation. The results of the study show that there are 48 multiculturalism contents spread across ten units, with the dominant indicators of learning to live in differences and appreciation and interdependence. These findings indicate that the Édito 1 book does not only function as a language learning tool, but also as a medium for instilling multicultural values that support the formation of student character, such as tolerance, openness, and appreciation of diversity.  The absence of indicators for conflict resolution and reconciliation is understandable, as this book is intended for A1-level learners who are still at the basic communication stage. Therefore, Édito 1 is relevant as a teaching material to support multicultural education and strengthen the character of beginning French language students.

Abstract

The development of digital technology and social media has changed people's entertainment consumption patterns, one of which is through the emergence of short Chinese drama video ads on TikTok that utilize short durations, emotional conflicts, and cliffhanger techniques to attract the attention of audiences. This study aims to analyse the audience's response to Chinese short video drama ads on TikTok which includes cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects and identify persuasion strategies used to attract audience interest. The research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, non-participatory observations, documentation, and literature studies of 26 informants selected using purposive sampling techniques. Data analysis was carried out using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn. The results showed that cognitive responses were characterized by attention, understanding, and curiosity about the storyline, affective responses were shown through emotional involvement due to conflict and attractive visual presentations, while behavioral responses were manifested in the act of liking, commenting, following accounts, searching for drama titles, and watching follow-up episodes on other platforms. In addition, persuasion strategies in the form of emotional conflicts, cliffhanger techniques, interesting scene selection, and TikTok's For You Page (FYP) algorithm support have proven to be effective in increasing audience attention, engagement, and active behavior towards Chinese short drama videos.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of linguistic politeness employed by the character Mak Beti in Arif Muhammad's YouTube channel based on Leech's Politeness Principle. A qualitative descriptive method was employed to analyze the utterances produced by the character in the Mak Beti video series. The data consisted of seven videos uploaded to Arif Muhammad's YouTube channel and were collected using observation and note-taking techniques. The findings revealed ten utterances that complied with Leech's politeness maxims. Among these, the Tact Maxim and the Approbation Maxim were the most dominant, with four occurrences each. In addition, one utterance represented the Agreement Maxim, and one represented the Sympathy Maxim. No instances of the Generosity Maxim or the Modesty Maxim were identified in the analyzed data. These findings indicate that Mak Beti's communication primarily emphasizes providing advice, expressing appreciation for others, and fostering harmonious social relationships. The study also demonstrates that YouTube comedy content can function not only as entertainment but also as a medium for promoting linguistic politeness, moral values, and social awareness.

Abstract

The widespread shift in the meaning of healing across social media platforms has transformed public perceptions of psychological recovery into practices centered on the consumption of products, services, and experiences. This study aims to critically examine the changing meaning of healing and its implications for consumerist practices. Employing a mixed-methods approach with a case study design, the research combines qualitative and quantitative data to provide a comprehensive analysis. The qualitative data consist of TikTok videos posted by @avian.brands, which were analyzed using Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) through its three analytical dimensions: text, discursive practice, and social practice. The quantitative component comprises secondary survey data on social media usage collected from multiple sources to contextualize the phenomenon. The findings demonstrate that healing narratives on social media function as discursive instruments that normalize consumption as a legitimate solution to psychological problems. The analysis further identifies a recurring cycle in which stress is mediated through media narratives that construct product desirability, encourage consumption, and ultimately produce only temporary healing, thereby reinforcing repeated consumer behavior rather than addressing the underlying causes of emotional distress. Six key data sets were identified from the Avian Brands campaign videos, including four findings at the textual level and two at the discursive practice level. The social practice analysis was conducted across three interconnected dimensions—situational, institutional, and social—revealing how healing discourse reproduces capitalist ideology by redefining emotional recovery as a consumer practice.

Abstract

Field observations at SMPN 5 PALU reveal that the vocabulary mastery of seventh-grade students remains far from optimal. Many students struggle to understand English reading texts because they encounter too many unfamiliar words. When asked to use these words in conversations or written tasks, they often feel hesitant and lack confidence. This problem is compounded by monotonous teaching methods, where teachers mostly provide vocabulary lists for students to memorize and translate without engaging, interactive activities. Such methods quickly lead to boredom, low motivation, and poor vocabulary. The purpose of this research is to prove if whether the Fly Swatter Game can improve the vocabulary mastery of seventh-grade students at SMPN 5 PALU. In this research, the researcher applied a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental research design, specifically the pre-test and post-test control group design. The independent variable in this study was the use of the Fly Swatter Game as a strategy for teaching vocabulary to the seventh-grade students of SMPN 5 Palu. Meanwhile, the dependent variable in this study was the students’ vocabulary mastery. The students who were taught using the Fly Swatter Game obtained higher scores compared to those who were taught using the conventional method. In conclusion, the use of the Fly Swatter Game was effective in improving the vocabulary mastery of the seventh-grade students at SMPN 5 Palu.

Abstract

Job rotation can broaden employee capability, but employees may evaluate it negatively when its purpose, process, and support are unclear. This study examines the effects of work motivation and job satisfaction on employees' attitudes toward job rotation at XYZ Hotel, an independent hotel in Bogor City. A cross-sectional survey was completed by 92 employees, and the model was assessed using partial least squares structural equation modeling in SmartPLS 3.0. Work motivation had a strong positive effect on job satisfaction (beta = 0.878, p < 0.001), while job satisfaction positively affected attitudes toward job rotation (beta = 0.506, p = 0.042). The direct effect of work motivation on attitudes toward job rotation was negative and not significant (beta = -0.172, p = 0.480). The indirect pathway through job satisfaction was positive and marginally significant at the 10% level (beta = 0.444, p = 0.061). The findings indicate that motivation alone is insufficient to create acceptance of rotation; satisfaction with supervisors, working conditions, rewards, and development opportunities helps translate motivation into a more favorable attitude. Hotel managers should therefore communicate rotation objectives clearly, prepare employees through training, and apply transparent and supportive rotation policies.

Abstract

The rise of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has opened new opportunities for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to improve the efficiency of promotion, customer service, and business management. However, the readiness of local MSMEs to sense, seize, and adapt to this technology remains poorly understood, particularly among cross-sectoral MSMEs in non-metropolitan cities such as Manado. This study aims to describe the dynamic capability process—sensing, seizing, and reconfiguring—in AI adoption among MSMEs in Manado City. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews with 8 MSME actors from various sectors (culinary, fashion, café, retail, tourism, beauty, automotive, and home-based bakery). Data were analyzed thematically through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal a sharp dynamic capability gap across sectors: MSMEs that interact directly with digital-savvy customers (café, fashion, tourism, beauty) show more mature sensing and seizing capability, whereas MSMEs based on routine physical transactions (grocery stores, motorcycle repair shops) remain at a very limited sensing stage. Across all informants, reconfiguring capability remains weak, as AI is so far used only for promotion and content creation rather than core business processes, and adoption is heavily dependent on support from more digitally literate family members. This study contributes to a contextual understanding of the AI adoption gap among regional MSMEs and recommends a differentiated training approach based on sector characteristics.

Abstract

Environmental crises have increasingly become a major concern as they threaten both ecological systems and human survival. Literary works often portray these concerns by imagining the consequences of environmental collapse and its impact on human behavior. This research examines the portrayal of environmental apocalypse and its impact on human survival behavior in The Death of Grass by John Christopher. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method and applies Greg Garrard’s (2004) ecocritical concept of apocalypse to analyze the representation of ecological catastrophe and survival behavior in the novel. The findings reveal that environmental apocalypse in the novel is portrayed through three major aspects: the spread of the Chung-Li virus, the inability of human institutions to control the crisis, and the collapse of natural and food systems. Furthermore, the environmental catastrophe significantly shapes the characters’ survival behavior through acts of violence, distrust, moral division, and self-preservation. The study concludes that the novel portrays environmental apocalypse not only as the destruction of nature but also as the transformation of human behavior and morality under conditions of extreme scarcity and social collapse.
