Abstract

This paper aims at investigating the features of disfluent speech by EFL learners at Taiz University. Disfluent speech features usually lead to listeners’ negative impressions on the EFL learners’ speech. This paper focuses on repair fluency aspects as fillers, repetitions, restarts and reformulations. Analysing those features contributes to the understanding of the ongoing learner’s needs that should be put into concentration during teaching. The data was collected from 20 level four students of English Language major, Faculty of Education, Taiz University. The participants were asked to narrate the events of a short silent video. The quantitative analysis showed that the participants overused disfluencies such as fillers, prolongations, repetitions, restarts and self-corrections. The mostly present self corrected item was the pronouns. This paper recommends that in order for the EFL learners to make their speech sound more fluent and more natural, they should be firstly introduced to the notion of disfluent speech features, and then they should be trained using some activities that focus on fostering fluency.

Abstract

This research focuses in developing global education based ELT materials for transactional speaking skills by using needs analysis. It is aimed to enhance the quality of teaching English at the tertiary level by adapting the students’ needs, the expectations of the lecturers and inputs from graduates to give beneficial contribution towards the students’ future career. This is a development research method by applying IDO’s model, which implements three systematic phases (Input, Development, and Output). The first phase is input phase. It is set up by needs analysis which is carried out by requiring 130 respondents (110 students, 8 lecturers and 12 graduates). Students and graduates are selected randomly while the lecturers are selected by using purposive sampling technique. The data are collected through needs analysis questionnaire and analyzed by using descriptive approach. The second phase, development, attempts to formulate the aim and the objectives based on the information of needs analysis which is used for selecting course contents. In the last phase is output phase. It is administered by compiling the lesson plan and producing the prototype of the global education based ELT materials for speaking skill, specifically transactional speaking skills. The findings of this research have confirmed the importance of using needs analysis as the basis of obtaining information about students’ linguistic and learning needs as well as for developing well-design ELT materials. This contributes to the prototype of an adaptive developed ELT materials comprising one sample of lesson plan and one unit of global education based instructional materials for transactional speaking skills development.

Abstract

Motivation, undoubtedly, plays a very crucial role in any learning process including second and foreign language learning. Such cruciality positions the maintaining and motivation raising in the integral part of learning and more so in the currently growing and more technologically advanced learning environments. This paper conceptually discussed the motivation raising strategies which have been employed toward English as second language (ESL) learners in two different dimensions, which are those strategies which depend on the role of an ESL teacher (i.e. pedagogical and material selection) and those which do not (i.e. parents, school institutions, media, and gender difference). Despite the existence of other external factors, we argue that teacher plays the decisive role on ESL learners’ motivation. From the critical review and more extended discussion, it is found that teacher’s awareness toward the cruciality of students’ motivation influences the strategies used by the teachers in order to raise motivation. The paper also re-emphasises the urgent needs for a more learner-centred learning as it is believed to have positive impact for learners’ motivation. This paper concludes by highlighting the significant contributions of the insights discussed within this study, especially for ESL teaching practitioners.

Abstract

Speaking fluently is characterized not only by the speed of oral delivery but also by the absence of non-fluent pauses. This paper aims at investigating the pausing phenomena in the speech of the Yemeni learners of English. It investigated three aspects of silent pauses, the frequency, the placement and the length.  The data were collected from 20 level four students enrolled in the Department English Language, Faculty of Education, Taiz University. The participants were recorded narrating the events of a short silent video immediately after watching it. Data were analyzed quantitatively utilizing the waveform spectrogram software called PRAAT. The findings showed that the Yemeni EFL learners overused non-fluent silent pauses. Additionally, they paused in the middle of the clauses rather than at the clause boundaries. With respect to the mean length of silent pauses, the speech of the EFL learners at Taiz University was full of long silent pauses which took one-third of the total speaking time. Therefore, it is highly suggested that the teachers of English should draw the learners’ attention to the notion of pausing and its effect on speaking fluency in order to lessen or avoid it. Teachers should also vary their activities to help the learners speak fluently without much pausing.

Abstract

This article attempts to analyze the discourse of women subjected to marital violence. In this regard, we will analyze how these women legitimize their discourse through evaluation as a narrative component and as a strategy that aims to establish a mode of argumentation that victimizes them and demonizes the violent husbands. The site from which the data is extracted is a TV talk show “Qesset Nnass” (The story of people) on the Moroccan TV channel Medi 1 TV. Specifically, we will be concerned with the ways women articulate propositions through moral legitimation to send messages that can only be decoded by reference to the cultural variable of language. The stories scrutinized are significant in that they foreground the extreme suffering women are subject to within a patriarchal society that leaves no room for acceptable alternatives at the economic, legal, and social levels.

Abstract

Critical literacy, which is derived from critical pedagogy and critical thinking, is crucial for teachers and students to acquire throughout their education. According to critical literacy approach, students are not only expected to read and write different texts but are also required to challenge, synthesize, analyze, and go beyond these forms of skills analytically and critically. With regard to reviewing various literature, this approach is not implemented effectively in the Middle East education systems due to some main obstacles. This paper is aimed at reviewing different literature and case studies in order to grasp these pivotal constraints that students and teachers encounter while learning and teaching in Middle-Eastern educational settings. The main purpose of this article is to review critically the domination of education by politics and religion, the lack of communicative language teaching approach, and the exclusion of teachers from making decisions as to the major impediments of enacting critical literacy in the Middle-east contexts.

Abstract

Identity expression can be seen at either a personal or a social level. It can be shown in several ways, particularly through poetry. Therefore, this paper seeks to examine how identity is expressed modally in Darwish’s famous poem “Identity Card”. Leech’s (1974) theory of “seven types of meaning” is used as the theoretical framework for the study. As the study aims to figure out how modality is constructed when expressing identity in the poem,  this linguistic norm has been used to track the mood and attitude of the poets in the composition of the stanzas. The findings of the study revealed that identity is expressed modally in the sensations that Mahmoud Darwish carries for the Palestinian, Arab, National, Cultural, Geographical and Historical identities. His language enacted the way he feels towards these six components of his belongings. Nationalism is seen as an important perspective in the affiliations of Darwish. The national identity is, however, the central concept of the poem. The modality provides a rough picture of what is going on in his mind as he experiencing the loss of land. It also comes in harmony with the general cultural context that contributes to his poetic experiences.

Abstract

Language is more than just a tool of communication. Beyond, it is a window to see how people organize their understanding and expression of conflict, including in a divorce. Divorce mediation then can be an alternative for dispute resolution process. The speakers’ (spouses and mediator) judgment and attitude towards the topic discussed in divorce mediation are implied in language they use in making statement, response or feedback related to the problems. It deals with one of linguistic features known as Modality. This research therefore, aims to identify the modalities used by Indonesian speakers in divorce mediations and to explain their attitude toward the problems discussed in divorce mediations and toward interlocutors. The research was conducted using Halliday’s theory of Modality. The result of this research shows kinds of modalities used by Indonesian speakers in divorce mediations discourse; specifically in the type, orientation, and the value of modality. The mediator mostly used probabilities and the wife mostly used inclinations. Besides, the mediator and husband mostly used low value modalities. Furthermore, in Indonesian divorce mediation discourse, the mediator, husband, and wife mostly used subjective-implicit. The topic discussed in Indonesian divorce mediation is about reuniting the husband and wife who planned to have a divorce.
