Abstract

Indonesian government concerned to determine the future of the Pacific and Indian Ocean Region through new vision as the world maritime fulcrum. Significant growth in Indian Ocean region urges a cooperation approach between littoral countries located around the Indian Ocean and lead the establishment of Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA). The cooperation will lead to the accomplishment of the Indonesia’s national interests. On the other side, the potential trade volume in the Indian Ocean region cannot be reached because of limited maritime infrastructure that facilitates the current trade. IORA should develop a master plan or blueprint on connectivity that will provide the infrastructure development agenda with the Public-Private Partnership to accelerate the infrastructure development. By this situation, the development of maritime infrastructure can be a double advantage for Indonesia because it will connect APEC and IORA. The important things to consider in terms of security is a potential threat both to security and defense if the government decided to open and build a deep seaport in Western Sumatera and Java Island. It is important to evaluate the potential threats and challenges if Indonesia wants to be a fulcrum of world maritime activity.

Abstract

The issue of rescuing distress people at sea, is a very important issue for Indonesia, particularly because it is an archipelagic country situated between two oceans and two continents and it becomes a major route for migrants due to its various maritime straits and the ‘porous’ coastlines. These geographical factors have also exacerbated some of the problems, particularly of some undocumented migrants and refugees passing through Indonesia, either by land, sea, or by air. The flow of illegal migrants to or through Indonesia has increased in recent years, particularly from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Iraq, Iran, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan, that require comprehensive solution, either domestically, bilaterally, or regionally.

Abstract

Terrorism, rooted in radical movement post 9/11 event in the United States, began to grow rapidly also in Indonesia. Radical movements, especially those based on religion, evolved into terrorist movements that threaten state security and defense. Civic education is part of the implementation of  state defense and security system. Radicalism, both as a movement and an ideology or a growing notion among Indonesians, is a threat to the state, that has a non-conventional nature. Therefore, civic education can be a program that can change people’s culture to put the love of the nation and the country as the main thing, thereby preventing the development of radical movements and ideology in Indonesia. The elements of religiosity (religion) can also play an important role in counteracting the threat of radicalism if it is integrated into the civic education curriculum. This paper will look at how civic education program can be used as a means of preventing the threat of radicalism in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to prove the truth of national resilence concept by using deductive phenomenological interpretive qualitative methods with epistemology of geostrategy as a main objective. Popper’s falsification test is intended to gather evidence on which the geostrategic peripheral is applied to the national resilience concept, rather than reject the conception. The required data includes the national resilience concept and an epistemology of geostrategy to explain geostrategic realities in a sistematic hierarchy, using historical documents, scientific publications and also interviews. This study has shown that the national resilience concept sits outside the geostrategic periphery, despite some evidence of geostrategic validity. The evidence indicating the applicability of geostrategy includes (1) Formulation of national objectives and; (2) Consideration of geography and geopolitical conditions

Abstract

Abstract - In the historical record, Japan was among the most prominent country in military aspect. Japanese military force at that time was evidenced by the strength of their personnel and equipment. This article aims to explore and analyze the development of Japanese military capabilities and ascertaining its implication on ASEAN and the defense of Indonesia. This study uses data analysis technique and narrative qualitative methods, each data that has been collected and validated will be analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion/verification. From this study, it can be concluded that the improvement of Japanese military capabilities is strongly related to the interest and conflict between several countries such as China, Japan and North Korea. Therefore, Indonesia needs to have preventive measure in anticipating the rise or improvement of Japanese military capabilities even if it has a harmonious cooperation with Japan in many aspects. After all, Indonesia was one of the direct victims of Japanese imperialism and militarism.
