Abstract

The objectives of this research are to depict the shift of transitivity that happen brought about by applying interpretation strategies in the translation on the site of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia. This research is Transitivity Shift In Experiential Function Of Texts In Official Website Of Kementrian Kesehatan. The sample of this research was clauses under the classification of experiential capacity that experience a shift intransitivity. The data were gathered by using the observation strategy, to be specific choosing the articles managing the Covid-19 and the English interpretation, perusing cautiously every one of the provisions in the source language, that is the Indonesian language, discovering the transitivity shift by grouping the sentences as per the experiential capacity function and were analyzed by qualitative descriptive method. The findings showed that there is a few transitivity shifts in the articles. In conclusion, the transitivity shift in two articles, there are one clause on the material to verbal, three clauses on the material to relational, two clauses on verbal to material, one clause on verbal to relational, and one clause on the material to existential. Nonetheless, there is no shift involving mental process in the two articles.

Abstract

The academic world requires English language skills to lead students to understand science that continues to develop to improve quality human resources in facing globalization competition. English proficiency is one of the places for developing human resource evaluations that must be managed interactively and professionally. English proficiency is one of the places for developing human resource evaluations that must be managed interactively and professionally. Learning and modules are two things that complement each other. Learning will take place effectively equipped with learning media. Therefore, it is very necessary to produce a product of teaching materials in the form of modules that are not only intellectual but also can create students to be more creative and innovative. The development of learning modules used ADDIE development. ADDIE has a five-stage model development among others : Analyze (Analyze), Design (Design), Develop (Develop), Implement (Apply), and Evaluate (Evaluate). The assessment of learning modules for material experts was divided into 4 aspects. The results of the assessment of each aspect showed the different average score. In the Feasibility of contents, the average score was 3.7, it means it was "Feasible" .Linguistic component aspect had score of 3.4, it was in "Feasible" category. The aspect of the assessment component obtained an average score of 3.1 that means it was in "Feasible" category. Meanwhile, in graphic component aspect, it was obtained 3.6 which that it was in "Feasible" category. The results of the material expert assessment showed total average score of 3.45 out of a maximum score of 4. Based on the feasibility category of the English learning module, the module was included in the "Feasible" category.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to investigate the levels and functions of questions asked by English teachers in English Online Classes at SMP Sint Carolus Bengkulu. A descriptive qualitative design was applied in this current research. Three English teachers in that school were chosen as the participants. Video recording, observation checklists, and interviews were employed as the instruments. The observations were done in 9 meetings. The result showed that there were 520 questions, with 363 content-related questions indeed. The result revealed two points: (1) English teachers asked363 content-related questions out of 520 questions and applied all levels of Bloom’s revised taxonomy. The levels from the highest to the lowest frequency were understanding, remembering, evaluating, applying, analyzing, and creating. (2) English teachers asked 520 questions during the online class and applied all functions of questions. The functions from the highest to the lowest frequency were class management, checking understanding, developing vocabularies, factual elicitation, building on thinking, practicing skill, developing reflection, cued elicitation, building on content, checking prior knowledge, and recapping. Based on the data, it can be concluded that all levels and all functions of questions were applied by the three English teachers at SMP Sint. Carolus Bengkulu, yet it is suggested to teachers to improve their questioning skills, so that they can facilitate students to create their critical and creative thinking.

Abstract

Abstract People use language to communicate. While communicating, people have their own ways to deliver their ideas. The language they used is constructed differently based on their own purposes. This research was conducted to study this phenomenon. It aimed at analyzing the speech function used by SEA Today News’ speakers to present the Indonesian perspective to the world. The data were collected from SEA Today News YouTube videos and were analyzed using a qualitative method. The analysis was formulated systematically to answer these two research questions: 1) What speech function categories are found in the Sea Today News video? and 2) What are the purposes of using those speech functions found? The results show that the four speakers in the SEA Today News video used all the speech functions related to their purposes. The most used speech function is ‘statement’ that revealed that the main purpose of the speakers in the SEA Today News video was to 'share information about the topic they discussed, Batik. Furthermore, it was also found that the four speakers in the SEA Today News video respond to each other’s utterances positively with no misunderstanding at all. It indicates the good communication that happens between the speakers.

Abstract

The design of this research is quantitative-qualitative descriptive research. The purpose of this research are first to analyze the needs of oral and written communication in English of nautical students in SMKN 4 Bengkulu and second to analyze the implementation of the students’ need. The subjects of this research are students of SMKN 4 Bengkulu 12th grade, English teachers in SMKN 4 Bengkulu, graduates of Nautical Study Program, and the stakeholders in the field of maritime. In this study, researcher used the needs analysis to find what are the need of oral and written of English for nautical students grade XII in SMKN 4 Bengkulu. The instruments that used in this study are questionnaires and interview. The result of the needs of oral and written of English for nautical students grade XII in SMKN 4 Bengkulu is the materials, topics, and activities that support their activities especially speaking and writing to work in the maritime field with simplified material that is suitable for beginner level and the needs can be implemented in lesson plan through the activity like monologue, watching film about cruise ship, and singing, but it will not appropriate with the curriculum set by the government.

Abstract

This study examines the English and Toba Batak language request sentence. The imperative phrase of both languages from its form, purpose, and category in a sentence was studied in this analysis. The research used descriptive approach and contrastive analysis in terms of methods, the entire data were gathered by observing and interviewing the native speakers of Toba Batak dialects who still speak in their everyday communication. In the analysis, the authors outlined and compared the differences and similarities in request sentences. The result that we saw from the position of the subject In Toba Bataknese, the position of subject was flexible, they could change without changing the meaning. While in English the position of subject was stable. In the request sentence, Batak Toba is less harsh and Batak people rarely use the word please, and usually the intonation seems strong and there is emphasis, while the request sentence is more likely to be smooth and polite, and the intonation is smoother.

Abstract

Politeness strategy is used in conversations to save addressee’s face by performing an expression that is less threatening for the addressee’s face. The aims of this research are to analyze politeness strategies used by two major characters of the seventh singularity story of Fate/Grand Order social game, and also to analyze the factors that influencing their choicess of politeness strategies. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The description of the data is in the form of utterances and examined based on Brown and Levinson theories of politeness strategy. Based on the obtained result, it can be concluded that the two major characters, Mash Kyrielight and Enkidu/Kingu applied four kinds of politeness strategy (bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness and off record). Both characters mainly used positive politeness strategy, while the least used strategy is bald on-record. Their choice of politeness strategies mostly influenced by social distance factor, imposition and also the power factor.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate the effect of the implementation of Storybird in writing a recount text for tenth-grade students in Surabaya Senior High School. Storybird is a web application that supports the educational process. Storybird is a creative digital storytelling website that allows students to write their own stories using its writing feature. Therefore, this study aimed to determine if there was a significant difference in the post-test score for producing a recount text between the experimental and control groups after Storybird was implemented. A quantitative method was used in this study, and a true experimental randomized subject posttest-only control group was the design. The samples of this study were 61 tenth-grade students of Senior High School in Surabaya from the experimental class and control class. The data were gathered through post-test and analyzed by the t-test formula using SPSS computation. The findings of this study revealed that there was a significant difference in post-test scores between the experimental and control groups. The independent sample t-test results were significant at .012 < .05, showing a significant difference in the post-test results. In conclusion, it suggested that students can implement Storybird in writing a recount text.

Abstract

ABSTRACT In the learning process of teachers still have a very important role in transferring knowledge to their students. In addition, success in teaching is greatly influenced by student learning activities. A teacher must have the ability to empathize, be a unique listener, and can be a facilitator for students in solving their problems by themselves.This research was a descriptive qualitative. The purpose of this research is to increase students’ vocabulary mastery by using crossword puzzle method. The subject of this research were 10 students. It consists of fourth (4) Males and six (6) Females. The instrument of this study a vocabulary test are interview and questionnaire. Based on the results of the interviewfirst, only 60% of students who do not like English because it is considered difficult and 40% like English because it is considered easy. Second, half of or 50% of students memorize a lot of vocabulary and half or 50% don't memorize a lot of vocabulary. Third, all students or 100% of students state that teachers who teach in class are boring and monotonous. The fourth is that all students or 100% know about crosswords. Based on the results of the questionnaire the highest percentage or 100% who answered "Yes" is in the second statement "crossword puzzle method is very excited. While the lowest percentage or 30% who answered" Yes "is the seventh statement" I was very excited by learning English vocabulary ". Furthermore, the highest percentage or 70% for those who answered" No "was the statement to the full" I was very excited by learning English vocabulary ". And the last lowest percentage or 20% who answered"

Abstract

Reading becomes greatly important issue since it is considered as the most frequent input to develop second language acquisition. In reality, learning strategies used in the classroom activity often left a gap between the high proficiency students and the lower one. Hence, peer-assisted learning strategy (PALS) comes to provide a way out towards the gap. The role of peer-assisted learning strategy is assumed to be one of effective learning strategies since it gives them a more chance to interact and cooperate closely while diminish the gap itself in reading skills. Therefore, this research aimed to know the role of PALS in order to help the students enhancing reading skills focusing on the fluency, pronunciation, and word recognition in comprehending the texts while eliciting social interaction between them. This belongs to a case study research. The data were collected through interviews with various grades of students in senior high school. In the end, the research provided the descriptions about the students’ opinion towards the role of PALS in enhancing their reading skills.
