Abstract

Abstract

This research presents development of vibration-based crack detection method using operating deflection shape (ODS) analysis from data measured by a Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV). Two types of work are conducted in this research. The first work is a numerical study, while the second work is an experimental study to verify the proposed method. In the numerical study, two types of specimen are used to simulate 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional problems using NASTRAN code. For the 2-Dimensional model, beams with two types of crack are tested, namely center and edge cracks. For the 3-Dimensional model, a plate specimen is tested. The length of the cracks and their locations are used as parameters to observe the ability of the proposed method to detect the existence and the location of the cracks. The results of numerical study show that the existence of cracks can be detected by using the natural frequency drops and the location of the cracks can be pinpointed by using the proposed S.Sd.D.Ms method (Square of the Second Derivative of the Deviation of the Mode Shape). In order to test the reliability of the proposed method, an experimental study is required. In this experimental study, FRF ODS measurements are conducted to derive the mode shape. Three types of specimen are measured, namely intact beam, center cracked beam, multiple center cracked beam and multiple edge cracked beam. The results of experimental study confirm that the proposed method can be used to detect the location of the cracks.

Abstract

Hydrocarbons (HC) are considered as the alterative substitutes of CFC and HCFC refrigerants. Using it as new refrigerants needs a complete knowledge of its characteristics. One of them is the boiling heat transfer coefficient. Series of experiments were carried out to investigate this characteristics. Experiments had been carried out with R-12 (CFC) and R-22 (HCFC) and their substitutes, HC-12 and HC-22. Tested refrigerant was conditiond at a saturated state and an electric heater immersed in the refrigerant pool of liquid was used as the boiling surface. Boiling heat transfer coefficient is determined as the ratio between the heat flux and the excess temperature on the boiling surface. The experimental results were compared between R-12 and R-22 with their substitutes. The experimental results were compared with the correlation equations proposed by researchers. Based on the analysis results, modified correlation equations are proposed for the tested refrigerants.

Abstract

The oil price has been increasing since the last few years. Since then the utilization of hydro power plant has also been increasing. The hydro power plant is very well known as environtmental friendly power plant and therefore its utilization is demanded all around the world. Indonesia has planned to build up until 488 MW micro and mini hydro power plant until the year 2020. Half of this is micro-hydro power plant and the other half is mini-hydro power plant. The turbines for micro-hydro power plant have been produced locally, but the other half which are mini-hydro power plant are still imported from foreign countries. It is the intention of this applied research to develop the capability of local industry to design and manufacture the Francis turbine for mini-hydro power plant from 300 kW until 5 MW. The utilization of CAD/CAM/CAE System is very intensif during the development phases. Reverse and forward engineering has been applied for this purpose. The good result has been achieved. The continuous improvement shall be done in the future in order to have the better result.

Abstract

The alternative refrigerants to be covered by the present paper include HFC (hydrofluorocarbon) refrigerants and their mixtures. Natural refrigerants such as hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide, and some new candidates such as HFEs (hydrofluoroethers), which all are non-ozone depleting substances. The authors aim to present an overview of the current state of the art with respect to several promising alternative refrigerants typically accepted in the refrigeration and air-conditioning industries in Japan. An emphasis will be given to the thermophysical properties research update that has significantly contributed to accelerate an adoption of binary and/or ternary HFC blends in various engineering applications. An important international collaboration through the IEA-Annex 18 project will be stressed so as to explain how the thermophysicists worldwide did contribute to achieve a successful landmark on thermodynamic property modeling of HFC refrigerants and their mixtures. Some essential features of other alternatives, such as hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, and HFEs will also be discussed based on the general technical observations.

Abstract

This paper presents experimental and numerical analysis on the influence of crack orientations to the fracture toughness of mode I and mode II for woven type carbon/epoxy four ply laminate. The experimental procedure is carried out through off axis tensile test (ASTM D 3039-76) with nine variation of crack orientations i.e. 5°, 10°, 15°, 30°, 45° 65°, 75°, 80°, and 90°. Three rail shear test (ASTM D 4255-83) is utilized for zero degree crack orientation. The stress and strain contours around crack tips are obtained numerically using the finite element method. Numerical and experimental results of the mode I (KI) and mode II (KII) fracture thoughness are presented in graphical form as a function of crack directions. Adopting Wu’s(11) Criteria for unidirectional lamina and Hahn’s[6] Criteria for general anisotropic lamina, a new mixed mode fracture toughness criteria is developed for woven fiber matrix laminate.

Abstract

In this experiment, the study focusses on reactor core thermohydraulic aspects especially the distributions of fuel surface temperature, fluid temperature and fluid axial velocity. Simulation data were obtained in the middle, at the edge and at the comer sub-channels. In this experiment, modeling of hexagonal configuration of reactor core and reflector was carried out. The power generations were assumed constant at 250 kwatt, 375 kwatt and 5 00kwatt for each filel element. This model was prepared and analyzed using Fluent Version 4.25 package program available at the Thermodynamic Laboratory of IURC-ES. The result shows that this reactor core model gives low fuel surface and fluid temperatures.
