Abstract

The objective of this research is to reveal any kind of women stereotypes and the impact of defying that stereotypes in Gurnah’s Afterlives. This research applies a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data. The data were obtained from the original novel and were presented in the form of a quotation sentence. After the data collection, the data were analyzed through deep reading and were interpreted carefully based on a feminist literary criticism approach. There were found two kinds of women stereotypes were found, from a general one, which is African women stereotypes, to the specific one, which is African muslim women stereotypes. African women in the novel are expected to do chores, portrayed as careless human beings, and not allowed to be educated in the sense of being able to write, which is believed as men’s business. African muslim women in the novel are often arranged into marriage, are expected to marry at a young age, prohibited from being out of the home for a long time and required to behave properly. Moreover, the women characters in this novel who have defied the stereotypes will face unpleasant treatment, such as being tortured or rumored. By analyzing women stereotypes in the novel, it reveals new insight into the existing women stereotypes in Africa, whether they are muslim or not.

Abstract

Failure of masculinity is the behavior of a man who fails to show the biological side of his masculinity by being irresponsible, not having a leadership spirit, and experiencing homosexuality. Therefore, the embodiment of the failure of masculinity occurs in the four male characters in the movie entitled “A Raisin in the Sun”. The research aims to analyze the failure of masculinity experienced by four male characters including Walter Lee, George Murchison, Joseph Asagai, and Carl Lindner, and the impact of the failure of masculinity experienced by those male characters on themselves. This research data was collected by watching movies, looking for subtitles or transcripts, observing transcripts that discuss masculinity failures, identifying data on masculinity failures in the form of hegemonic masculinity, subordinate masculinity, complex masculinity, and marginal masculinity, coding data from transcripts, and finally analyzing masculinity failures. In this research, the theory of patriarchy and masculinity are used, and psychological and sociological approaches are also essentially used to analyze the data. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods including phrases, clauses, words, and sentences. The results of the research found a failure of masculinity in four male characters, including Walter Lee, George Murchison, Joseph Asagai, and Carl Lindner. Second, researchers found the effects of failed masculinity on Walter Lee's character, including depression, emotional suppression, feeling lonely, and lying in the film entitled A Raisin in the Sun. Masculinity is usually shown automatically in the male characters, but this research has found that they fail to do what such masculinity characteristics are supposed to do by them.

Abstract

This study aims to systematically review the development of corpus linguistics by examining its concepts, methodological trends, applications, and technological advancements. The research addresses the need for a comprehensive synthesis of corpus linguistics studies in the digital era, as previous studies are often limited to specific contexts. The participants of this study consist of 25 selected research articles obtained through a systematic literature review process using the PRISMA framework, involving identification, screening, eligibility, and quality assessment stages from multiple databases. The method employed is a systematic literature review combined with descriptive and thematic analysis, supported by bibliometric analysis to identify research patterns and trends. The findings reveal that corpus linguistics is widely applied in language learning, linguistic analysis, and technology development, with corpus-based approaches dominating practices. The use of authentic language data enhances learning, improves engagement, and supports data-driven analysis. Additionally, technological tools such as corpus analysis software and artificial intelligence play a significant role in increasing the efficiency and accuracy of linguistic analysis. However, challenges remain in terms of corpus literacy, data validity, and access to resources. This study concludes that corpus linguistics contributes significantly to modern linguistic research and highlights the importance of integrating technology and adaptive approaches

Abstract

Queer romance in contemporary popular fiction has moved from marginal tragedy to more affirmative stories, yet less attention has been given to how such romance is negotiated inside institutions that depend on public image, tradition, and inherited norms. This article examines Casey McQuiston's novel Red, White & Royal Blue (2019), focusing on the relationship between Alex Claremont-Diaz, the First Son of the United States, and Prince Henry of the British royal family. Using a descriptive qualitative method and an extrinsic literary approach grounded in Annamarie Jagose's queer theory and Foucault's conception of sexuality and power as discussed by Spargo, this article analyses scenes where intimacy is shaped by external constraints. The findings show that politics turns Alex's sexual orientation into a campaign risk, royal tradition disciplines Henry through silence and continuity, and family expectations operate as both pressure and support. These forces produce a three-way dilemma in which queer love must be negotiated through vulnerability, strategy, and public affirmation. The article concludes that McQuiston presents queer romance as a relationship lived within and against institutional power, making love both emotionally intimate and politically meaningful.
