Abstract

Lexical cohesion refers to the way in which words in a text relate to each other through their meanings. This topic is important due to the fact that words in texts have relations among them based on the keywords. The relation could be in synonymy, antonymy, and hyponymy, which sometimes some readers lack of this matter. The subject of this study is the literary work of the novel Circe by Madeline Miller. The focus of this study is how lexical cohesion supports themes of rebellion in this novel and demonstrates how vocabulary forms a network. This study answers the gap in existing research, which mostly explores lexical cohesion in educational contexts and journal articles, but not in literary works with certain themes such as rebellion. This study aims to identify and analyze the lexical cohesions used to convey the theme of rebellion in the novel Circe and, with existing data, investigate how lexical cohesion forms vocabulary networks. This study used Halliday and Matthiessen's (2014) theory of lexical cohesion. This analysis reveals how lexical choices increase narrative coherence and thematic depth. The methodology used is qualitative research. The source of this study is Madeline Miller's Circe. The findings show that lexical cohesion in Circe is 50 data achieved through various devices such as synonymy (five nouns, four verbs, four adjectives), antonymy (seven nouns, five verbs, four adjectives), and hyponymy (nine nouns, twelve verbs, zero adjectives). This lexical cohesion demonstrates how vocabulary forms a network that enhances understanding and vocabulary by forming a network of related words such as synonyms, antonyms, and hyponyms that help readers or listeners connect ideas, identify relationships between terms, and interpret texts more coherently, ultimately enriching comprehension and enabling the acquisition of diverse and nuanced word meanings.

Abstract

Batik is a form of cultural expression which can express the cultural identity in Indonesia, such as in Balikpapan city. The initiative of Balikpapan City's government to showcase the cultural identity pursued through the local batik motifs produced by the local artisans, one of them is the Kelubut batik motif. Beyond its application on batik fabrics, where it is commonly featured in traditional attire, the Kelubut motif has been embraced in various public spaces and infrastructures. Therefore, this study analyzed how Kelubut batik motifs are constructed as cultural identities of Balikpapan City through the local artisans perspectives. This study employs Foucauldian discourse analysis (FDA) theory to examine the process of discourse construction in shaping the cultural identity. This study used a qualitative method. The data collection technique was interview and observations. This study found that the discourse in constructing the cultural identity through this motif is carried out through various means, such as through the philosophical values present in the embedded motifs, use of motifs in traditional cloth, use in governmental events, use in training for batik artisans, use in school uniforms, and infrastructure decoration. The identity that is created as a product of that culture is continuously developed along with the policies carried out by the government. Therefore, the findings provide new insights into how policies can construct a cultural identity in a city.

Abstract

The time and place setting of the novel is Muhammadiyah School in Gantung sub-district on the island of Belitung that has implemented inclusive education in the 1980s, despite the absence of an Inclusive Education Law at the time. This research aims to analyze the portrayal of intellectual disability in the novel Laskar Pelangi, because the theme of intellectual disability of the character in the novel has not been found. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the study conducts interpretive event analysis, supported by data analysis using theories of educational psychology and social psychology. Eight internal conditions associated with the intellectual disability of the character Harun are identified: 1. Exhibits a humorous demeanor while experiencing intellectual impairment. 2. Belongs to an economically disadvantaged community. 3. Sits quietly and smiles continuously during lessons. 4. Repeats the same questions daily. 5. Recounts identical stories every day. 6. Advances to higher grades despite lacking formal academic records. 7. Maintains a consistent smile during interactions. 8. Displays childlike thinking despite physical maturity. Harun’s cognitive deficits are significant, with an inferred IQ score below 70. The success of special needs education cannot be equated with the academic achievements of typically developing students. Inclusive education’s efficacy hinges on governmental policy support, university collaboration, and familial financial capacity.

Abstract

In the era of rapid digital transformation and global technological disruption, the contemporary Indonesian literature landscape is at a crossroads between innovation and preservation of cultural identity. This study investigates the impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on literary creativity, focusing on three core phenomena: the degradation of originality, an ethical literacy crisis, and the fragmentation of literary discourse. Utilizing a qualitative systematic literature review, the research analyzes digital literary corpora, educational policies, and public media discussions to explore how AI-generated content challenges traditional authorship and the intrinsic values of literature. Findings indicate that while AI technologies facilitate efficient production of texts, they often reproduce conventional patterns and diminish the unique human touch in creative works. Furthermore, the reliance on AI blurs the boundary between human and machine contribution, raising ethical concerns over accountability and the erosion of critical literacy skills. The study advocates for a hybrid model that integrates technological advancements with human creativity, proposing reforms in educational curricula and policy frameworks to safeguard ethical literary practices. The research provides a comprehensive insight into the transformative effects of AI in literature, emphasizing the need to balance innovation with the preservation of cultural and artistic authenticity in the digital age.

Abstract

Intercultural competence is needed in the global era, where people easily interact with people from other countries. This competence is also important for teachers, as they need to transfer it to their students. Folktales are literary works that can enhance intercultural competence as they reflect a particular culture. This study aims to reveal pre-service teachers’ perspectives on reading and comparing folktales from various countries to enhance their intercultural competence using reader-response theory. The qualitative design is employed in this study by analyzing pre-service narrative reflections. This study involves 20 pre-service teachers who took Prose for English Language Education class. This study found that pre-service teachers consider that they could widen their cultural knowledge by reading and comparing folktales from various countries. Participants reported gaining insights into different cultural beliefs, values, and ways of life, recognizing universal moral values embedded in folktales, and appreciating the didactic and imaginative qualities of these narratives. The comparative approach facilitated critical thinking by enabling them to identify both similarities and differences across cultures, thus deepening their intercultural understanding. Implication of this reseach, this study encourages curriculum developers and teacher educators to integrate diverse folktales into language education programs to support the goals of the emancipated curriculum, which emphasizes intercultural understanding.

Abstract

The concept of Ikumen is a concept of fatherhood in modern Japan as a father who takes care of children, enjoys taking care of children, takes care of children while working and in his care can also mature himself. The emergence of Ikumen is a turning point in the declining role of fathers in Japan over time. The purpose of this study is to describe the concept of Ikumen with different contexts in general, namely a father who is not a human being but, in his actions, can be called an Ikumen according to Moteki, Ikumen Project, Kobe Ikumen Executive, Oyama. The approach used is the sociology of literature which explains literature as a reflection of society that discusses the extent to which the literary genre used can represent all elements of society. The results of this study show that the character Medama Oyaji can portray aspects of Ikumen, namely as a man who takes care of children, enjoys childcare, takes care of children while working, and in his care is able to mature himself, which is applied through the context of yokai. Thus, this study contributes to expanding the understanding of the concept of Ikumen not only limited to human fathers, but can also be applied to representations of fathers in unique popular culture contexts such as yokai characters, thus enriching the study of fatherhood in modern Japanese society.
