Abstract

Agroforestry activities are carried out in order to obtain community welfare, both in and around forests and at the same time also maintaining primary forest. Agroforestry can provide long-term benefits, such as increased crop productivity, more sustainable land use, as well as soil and environmental conservation. The success of forest management through agroforestry is determined by the level of community participation in forest management and the quality of human resources. The aim of the research was to identify and analyze several factors that strengthen social capital of agroforestry system in Argosari village and its sustainability. Using quantitative approach with Multi Dimensional Scaling (MDS)-Rap-agroforestry, all research variable (trust, ecology, social, and agroforestry) perceived as neutral by respondents. The Rap-agroforestry found that all dimensions studied are quite accurate and can be justified, where stress value ranges between 0.15-0.21 and coefficient of determination value is 0.910.97. The sustainability index is as follows: ecology (54.68), economy (36.46), and social (45.40). The difference between the sustainability index and Monte Carlo are so small : ecology (0.32), economy (0.86), and social (0.31), so that the sustainability index can be used to conduct a sustainability  assesment of the agroforestry system in Argosari village. This is very important for future policy formulation.

Abstract

Conservation efforts will succeed if it involves the community so that the utilization of certain species and the attitude of the surrounding community are very important to be known. This study aims to find the utilization of Rafflesia zollingeriana so far and how the attitudes of the surrounding community towards R. zollingeriana, as well as its conservations. R. zollingeriana has been collected by the community around Meru Betiri National Park (MBNP) to be utilized as medicinal materials. The survey results indicated that the community's knowledge and awareness towards R. zollingeriana and its conservation are still low. Utilization of R. zollingeriana mainly occurs due to its economic value. Hence the adopted conservation policy must integrate sustainable use and economic interests of the surrounding community. The recommended form of conservation for R. zollingeriana is ecotourism. This activity should involve relevant stakeholders, among others the community, MBNP, local government, private sector, NGOs, researchers, and academics. There are two proposed areas for the development of R. zollingeriana ecotourism, namely Teluk Hijau and Sukamade beaches. The management of these two locations must pay attention to the aspects of the prevention, mitigation, and recovery. In addition, it is recommended to carry out routine inventory and propagation activities of R. zollingeriana by involving the collaboration of stakeholders, so that the population of R. zollingeriana in MBNP can be sustained for various purposes.

Abstract

The  effectiveness  of  farmer  groups  in  developing  sustainable  agroforestry  farming  requires  the  active participation of all members of farmer groups.  One of the factors that influences the level of member participation in farmer group activities is the level of member satisfaction at the role of farmer group. This study aims to determine the level of member satisfaction and the main factors that influences increasing member satisfaction at the role of farmer group. The study was conducted in Cukangkawung Village, Sodonghilir Sub-district, Tasikmalaya Regency, West Java Province from November 2017 until April 2018. Data were analyzed using Customer Satisfaction Index and Importance Performance Analysis approaches. The results showed that the level of member satisfaction at the role of farmer groups in the development of agroforestry farming was still low. The main factors that need to be considered by farmer groups to increase member satisfaction with the role of farmer groups are  the ability to increase members’ capacity, to establish cooperation with stakeholders, and to strengthen of farming capital. Therefore, it is recommended that the farmer group, central and local governments altogether should manage these main factors in developing agroforestry farming.

Abstract

Efforts to increase land productivity in forest areas have been carried out through community-based forest management programs in the form of coffee planting activities under pine stands. However, the coffee productivity produced by farmers is still considered not optimal, even though farmers have allocated all factors of production in their farming processes. This study aims to determine the scale of business and optimization of the utilization of coffee farming production factors under pine stands. Data collection was conducted by interviewing 30 respondents who were selected by purposive random sampling. The data was analyzed using Cobb Douglas production function approach and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) method to estimate its parameters. To find out the optimal utilization of production factors, then the ratio of marginal production value (NPM) approach to production input prices is used. The results showed that the utilization of land production factors was not optimal because NPMXi/PXi = 3.237. While the seed, fertilizer, and labor factors were already inefficient with NPMXi/PXi value of -2.416, 0.066, and 0.480 respectively. Efforts to optimize income from coffee farming can still be turned out through expansion of planting areas if sufficient land is available or there is a reduction in the composition of coffee plants, the amount of fertilizer used, and the amount of excess labor.

Abstract

As an effort to resolve conflicts in the FMU Gedong Wani area, a forestry partnership was conducted with an agroforestry system. To find out the extent to which the partnership scheme is able to invite community participation, then this study was conducted. This study aims to 1) determine the characteristics of the research area, 2) learn the profile of partnership farmers, 3) identify the form and level of participation of farmers, 4) formulate management recommendations. Data collection was carried out through interviews based on questionnaires and direct observation. Respondents are members of forest farmer groups involved in the partnership scheme. Measurements of participation are done with cross tabulation, while Likert scale method is using to measure participation level. The data is analyzed descriptively which refers to Hurairah (2008) and Arnstein (1969). The study shows that there are three tangible forms of participation in the development of agroforestry, namely participation in the form of ideas, labor contributions, as well as social participation in the form of inter-community support as a sign of kinship in managing partnership land. The level of participation of Agro Forest Park Forest Farmer Group (FFG) is at the 6th level, namely partnership. At this level farmers are able to negotiate and engage in activities with its partner (FMU). With this position, farmers have more space and power to involve in decision-making process. However, farmers do not have space in managerial decision-making and managerial work. This is not in line with  the forestry development paradigm that places the community as subjects in forest management.

Abstract

Community Forest (CF) development is the Ministry of Environment and Forestry’s policy to reduce deforestation, strengthen communities’ management rights, and reduce conflicts. This research aims to identify the determinant of CF success factors, including perceptions, community attitudes, potential benefits from CF, institutions, and ability of the community to overcome the problems in managing CF. This study was conducted in Bakti Makmur and Sumber Rejeki CFs, located in Kota Agung Utara Protection Forest Management Unit, Tanggamus District, Lampung Province. Perception analysis using Likert Scale method is to measure perceptions, attitudes, or opinions of a person or group regarding social phenomena. The community income was analyzed using quantitative methods with simple tabulations. The study shows that the community's perception of the CF development is high, both from their understanding, and readiness in implementing the CF program. The gross income of the CF farmer group is estimated at Rp24,760,000/ha/year. This study indicates that CF land can be used as a source of community income. Continuous guidance from the government to CF farmers is necessary in  facing challenges that continue to grow, while maintaining forest sustainability, improving forest cover.

Abstract

Sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria) wood is one of the forestry commodities that is currently in demand by farmers in Magetan Regency. Sengon wood business in the community forests is carried out through agroforestry pattern. Agroforestry is a land use (agriculture) that combines forest plants with agricultural crops, which aims to increase profits, both economically as well as environmentally. The research aims to determine the financial feasibility of sengon wood, which is planted through  agroforestry patterns. The study was conducted in the Jabung, Ngiliran, and Bedagung Villages, Panekan District, Magetan Regency. Determination of location was done purposively. Primary data collection was carried out through interviews with farmer group members. The financial analysis data used in this research is the 8-year sengon wood cycle. The results of the financial feasibility analysis show that pattern I, which is the  combination of sengon tree and clove is more beneficial compared to pattern II, the combination of sengon tree with empon-empon plants. Pattern I is more profitable, since the  management costs per ha are lower, while the commodity prices are higher.

Abstract

Community Forest (CF) is a sustainable forest management scheme that involves local community in order to increase the level of community welfare. It is necessary to develop several business activities that are able to support forest ecology and improve the living standard of the community. These activities include making organic liquid fertilizer (POC). The purpose of this research is to analyze the business feasibility and business continuity of POC of farmer group Harapan Maju CF in the Mobui Village, Kembayan District, Sanggau Regency, West Kalimantan. Data were collected through interviews with the management of the joint business group (KUB) of Mobui Majua covering fixed and variable costs based on market prices. In this research, some assumptions that are in line with field conditions are used for financial and sustainability analysis of POC production. The result shows that the activity of making POC by Mobui Majua CF is financially feasible with a positive Net Present Value (NPV), Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) of 1.56, Return on Investment (ROI) of 55.67%, and Payback Period (PP) in 7.5 months. Human resources skill and capability, proper marketing strategy, effective institution and raw material supply certainty are influencing factors for the POC business sustainability

Abstract

Small-scale forest as private property has implications on autonomous management decisions, including whether it will be preserved or converted. Changes in land management at the water catchment area of Jatigede reservoir will impact on the dam condition. The purposes of this study are to determine the financial feasibility level of the small-scale forest business compare to other forms of land management, to identify factors influencing farmer’s decisions, and to evaluate implication of property rights to the conversion of small-scale forest. The results show that small-scale forest management in Jatigede catchment area is generally found in the form of woodlands and agroforestry. Other forms of land management are rice fields and crops. Financial analysis shows that all land management patterns are feasible. The economic factors in the form of profits, savings, and selffulfillment are the dominant motivations for timber planting. The financial benefit difference between agroforestry and crops management is not very large, but the potential for conversion is still exists due to daily need fulfillment. One approach that can be applied to prevent small-scale forest conversion is through policy interventions on payment for environmental services, where the target is more intended for empowerment activities to meet the needs of daily living.
