Abstract

Recently, there has been an increasingly concern to completely address social problems particularly those faced by the oppressed people who have no access to economic wealth and have been marginalized by unjust structure at the same time. As an idealistic organization, Muhammadiyah student association (IMM) aspires to be in the frontline of tackling that matter. In dealing with such a multidimensional problem, IMM attempts to adopt multidisciplinary approach proposed by Amin Abdullah and Kuntowijoyo since currently, it has been successfully adopted by many scholars. This paper was intended to enhance the idea of combining natural and social sciences, as well as philosophy and humanities into more transformative and liberal movement in order to solve the exacerbated problems of humanity in recent decades. This purpose can be accomplished through exploring and directing transformative paradigm as proposed by Moslem Abdurrahman, Kuntowijoyo and Omid Safi into a multidisciplinary approach. As a result, intellectual movement can be established by IMM where students from various academic backgrounds—both natural and social sciences—may gather and discuss to bring about the social and structural transformation.

Abstract

CERDAS School is one of new programs implemented in school learning. This program is important and very useful to be implemented in schools considering its excellent orientation and output for students and teachers of Islamic Religious Education and Counseling Guidance. The purpose of the CERDAS School Program is that the schools will have knowledge, skills and policies to respond to the risks of natural disasters or human-induced disasters (bullying/violence at school) and becoming agent of peace and reconciliation. The program was implemented and delivered through learning and training that were set as game in each of material delivery. In learning, CERDAS school materials were inserted in Akhlaq subject and counseling guide, while the training was held to equip and train representatives of school peace. This research was of field research and data was collected by using observational data record, interview and documentation that can support the research study. The data was analyzed by using deductive model.Findings of the research indicated that 1) Implementation of CERDAS School Program of Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC) in SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta was quite successful in changing the way and attitude of learners to become agents of peace for themselves and others at the school. It was seen since the implementation of CERDAS School Program that learners with advantages were not showing arrogant attitude, but they can be humble. Likewise, those who had some inferiority were not feeling inferior with their shortcomings. In fact, the shortcoming was a whip to be more eager to appreciate Gods blessings. With the CERDAS School Program, learners know how to make peace with themselves, barriers to the peace, and find a way to the peace. 2) Implementation of TANDUR method in Smart School Program of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta can be conducted during Training of CERDAS School Representatives through Wisdom Word, introduction to and core of learning, model and practice and action. While, the TANDUR method was delivered duringschool hours in core of learning only.

Abstract

This paper discusses the idea of Transformative Islamic Education with Teologi Kalibokong as the illustration. Teologi Kalibokong is used by Moeslim Abdurrahman to describe the disadvantaged situations endured by marginal societies for being exploited by middlemen and capitalists. Nevertheless, those situations cover many aspects including social, economy, education, and politics. From the perspective of Islamic jurisprudence, marginal society becomes a group of people who are less religious. They are presumed as less religious believers. Related to this, Moeslim Abdurrahman introduces the significance of particular theology for the oppressed (al-mustadafin), which is the building of Islamic theology as the spirit of Transformative Islamic Education that generates people who capable of breaking the impasse of social injustice with critical Islamic and non-judgmental approaches.

Abstract

For a number of scholars, the emergence of middle class society is a considerable phenomenon. Moreover, it is linked to the transformation of education in the digital era. The middle class society has relatively established economic background, well-educated (senior secondary school and high education graduates), and high democratic consciousness. The number also flourished and thrives in line with national economic growth. Generally, they are the employees of private and government agencies, as well as entrepreneurs. In addition, they have appropriate access to information technology, indicated by the massive utilization of smartphones and social media for interaction. Nevertheless, despite the steady economic life, this group has a propensity to be conservative in terms of religion and politics. Moreover, their less wise usage of social media leads to low digital literacy. It is indicated by the common postings that involve ethnicity, religion, race and intergroup, hoax, and other violations. This paper is a descriptive study of the behaviors of middle class Muslims in using information technology.

Abstract

The subject of this study is the phenomenon of child marriage or early marriage in the area of Gajah Mungkur Reservoir, Wonogiri, particularly related with its implication on the character building. In this area, child marriage has been practiced and traditionally carried out by the local community of 12-20 years in age. Despite the tendency of declining marriage number since 2000, the phenomenon is still rampant. Nevertheless, it has adverse impacts on the effort to build the national character for the future. It implies on the achievements of the Nawa Cita declared by Jokowi and Jusuf Kalla, especially priorities 3, 5, 8, and 9, within the framework of Overhauling the Character of the Nation. This study investigates the problems linked to child marriage, which cover the main factors of poverty, low educational background, communal traditional values, negative social value shift, low awareness of self-development, and low level of scientific literacy. The government, actually, has devised some measures to address this issue, yet they fail to solve the fundamental issue. This phenomenon influences the character building of society towards the ideal characters aspired by the Indonesian nation at least as stated in the Nawa Cita. The data of this study were collected through observation, documentation and in-depth interview. Furthermore, they were analyzed using an eclective technique by simultaneously employed deductive and inductive analysis framework in an attempt to explicate the relationship and implication among various aspects within the issue.

In Indonesia post authoritarian era, the education practice in many districts is facing several dynamics especially as logical consuqeunce from political decentralization including in education sector. There have been many horizontal conflicts in regions as political response in opposing central government acts to build local identity that frequently being clashed with racial/race/region based social conflict. This research aims to analyze the dynamic of higher education in Muhammadiyah university of Kupang (UMK) that managed by Muhammadiyah as private institution, to eventually understand how the design and practice of multiculturalism education in this Islam based university in Kupang. Of several FGD and interviews that we combine with political theory analysis about multiculturalism education, we find several conclusions that lead us to say that multicultural education design in UMK is not sufficient. Practice of respecting diversity in UMK is mostly based in individual awareness to naturally accept pluralism. This is also supported by family experience of student that since their early has been living in diversity.

Abstract

As a product of social practice, the presence of Hizbul Wathan Muhammadiyah successfully fills the void between the dysfunction of formal education institution and the society. It is the contemplation of the input-output oriented paradigm of the former colonial education. In fact, a number of graduates suffer from reality faltering when they are directly involved in the society. Hizbul Wathan Muhammadiyah exists as the antithesis of the contradictory structure between formal schools and society. It fills the “third space” of education by serving as the intermediary to facilitate distinctive values, norms and collective consciousness—which differ from general Scout movement. The ideology of religious humanism, nationalism, and patriotism in Hizbul Wathan Muhammadiyah has moved beyond others.
