Abstract

This research investigated non-EFL students’ spontaneous technique to reduce their English-speaking anxiety. This research proposes an instrument in three areas and the findings are parallel with them. The first scope is the use of various instruments which could give both strengths and lacks to students. The proper instruments help students to maintain the time necessary. The inappropriate use of the instrument lengthens students’ time to perform their speaking. The second finding scope is students' method of reducing anxiety through managing language use which covers diction, synonym, intonation management, length of speech, punctuation use, and repetition. The verbal language used represents students' previous experience and their readiness. The third finding scope is students’ method of reducing anxiety through managing non-linguistic aspects that cover facial expression, eye contact, body language, and changing of standing up position. The main conclusion is that reducing anxiety needs a well-prepared method or program.

Abstract

In the modern era, Islamic boarding school education has changed forms of adaptation to the times. One of them is the existence of the term Modern Islamic Boarding School where the education system combines national and international curricula and adapts to the needs of the students. Extracurricular activities are one of the activities that exist in modern Islamic boarding schools. This activity is known as Muhadhoroh. This study explores Muhadhoroh and English-speaking skills related to the benefits, challenges, and strategies for these activities. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method. The research data were obtained from interviews, observations, and documentation while the participants in this study were three English teachers who teach at Amanatul Ummah Islamic boarding school both Indonesian and foreign teachers. The research data were analyzed in four stages, namely data collection, data display, data reduction, and conclusion. The results of this study indicate that Muhadhoroh could provide opportunities for students to develop talents in the field of English public speaking skills because students had the opportunity to perform various kinds of English performances in public. Related to challenges, this activity has challenges including preparation, time management, and facilities. Even so, several strategies could be taken to overcome these challenges, including arranging preparation and performance schedules, utilizing free time and shifting school schedules into preparation and performance schedules, as well as adding facilities by renting equipment to other parties during activities. This study is limited in location and the number of participants who are only in one Islamic boarding school and the type of research instrument. It is recommended for further research to be able to conduct similar research by adding variations of participants and Islamic boarding schools as well as adding variations of research instruments

Abstract

This study aims to reveal gender values in the narrative text of English textbook and how the values meet the requirement of the 2013 Curriculum. This research uses a qualitative approach. The data source is narrative text in English textbook published by the Ministry of Education and Culture. Data collected through documentation techniques by citing. Meanwhile, the data analysis procedure includes finding how many narrative texts are in the English textbook, reading the text carefully, taking notes and collecting citations. In addition, it is found that the narrative text was dominated by the values of gender inequality. Gender inequality is still considered as a silent missile in today’s education and is still present in many stories or classic narrative texts in English textbooks. The researcher also found the unsuitability of the valueswith the 2013 Curriculum. Finally, based on the findings of this study, the researcher suggested that educational institutions pay more attention to the content of textbooks, not only in accordance with the current curriculum, but also according to student’s needs.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the presuppositions that occur between teachers and students during classroom interactions. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach to describe the teachers and students’ interactions in the classroom and how the presuppositions can be understood well in their interactions. The data were collected through recording method during the classroom interactions. Descriptive analysis was used to categorize and interpret the data, and lead to the identification of five types of presuppositions: existential, factive, lexical, structural, and non-factive presupposition. The study found that each utterance contained various forms that indicated presuppositions, and each type of presuppositions was not exclusively indicated by a specific word-form. Therefore, categorizing each type of presupposition requires consideration of the contexts of the speaker's discussion, rather than solely looking at the phrase used.

Abstract

This retrospective study reports a quantitative analysis of two types of assignments and two test forms used to measure improvement of student’s writing skill in two composition classes at Universitas Andalas, West Sumatera, Indonesia. This project aims to identify the different roles of the two test forms used as well as the relationship and learning effects between the two test forms and weekly personal writing task or in-class group tasks. In this research, two EFL classes of Composition with two different groups of students in two successive academic years were observed. The classes’ activities, held through fourteen meetings for learning activities and two meetings for mid-term and end-of-term examinations, consisted of weekly assignments of composing paragraphs or short essays individually and collaboratively. The first composition class used an integrative test, i.e. cloze test, as the mid semester examination and a short essay test as the final semester examination. The second class used only essay test for both exams. The individual weekly writing task was assigned in both classes while the collaborative writing task was assigned only in the first class. The pearson r corelational analyses on scores of the assignments and the tests in both classes shows that the modified cloze test appeared to still correlately weakly with the essay test but, through t-test analyses, still significant in detecting the learning effect. Personal weekly writing assignments correlate strongly with essay test while the collaborative work appeared to have less significant learning effect on the student's writing competence.

Abstract

Indonesia's English Proficiency Index (EPI) has declined significantly over the past 11 years, according to Education First's annual report. The country's latest ranking is 81st out of 111 countries, indicating poor English performance. One of the contributing factors is the conventional pedagogy that focuses mainly on grammar, while the disregard of various forms of English literature, such as expository texts, impedes students' writing ability. Developing digital learning resources that provide new insights is crucial. So in this study investigates the key creative processes employed in the development of digital expository text resources for high school students in Indonesia and how these processes inform the characteristics of the product prototype. The research design is a qualitative approach, specifically a single-case study design, with the author being the only participant. Data collection methods included document analysis, and content analysis was used to analyze the data. The findings indicate that the key creative processes involved in the development of digital expository text resources include lesson plan analysis, text analysis, and CEFR analysis, among others. These processes informed the characteristics of the product prototype, including its visual design, interactive features, and pedagogical strategies. The study suggests that the development of digital expository text resources should be informed by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) to align with the language proficiency levels of the target audience. This study provides valuable insights into the creative processes involved in the development of digital expository text resources and how these processes can inform the characteristics of the product prototype.

Abstract

The problem in English learning is determining how learners and teachers adjusted to remote learning methods. This study identified and evaluated the English learning difficulties encountered by students in non-English departments. This study included students from five different academic programs, namely Islamic Education (PAI), Management of Islamic Education (MPI), Akhwalusy Syakhshiyah (AS), Primary School Teacher Education (PGMI), and Islamic Banking (PS). The qualitative research was used in this study, along with a phenomenological approach. The data were obtained from a questionnaire through Google Form to students in these departments. The questionnaire discussed challenges that students had when learning English with an online system, materials that students did not grasp, and students' expectations for English language learning. The data were analyzed by including several research and ideas related to previously formulated materials in the questionnaire. This study was supposed to be taken into account while developing techniques and strategies for English language acquisition for non-English students in higher education. This study resulted that the dominant problems faced by respondents were online learning systems (54.8%), and applications used as learning media (29%). Other problems included limited internet network access, difficulty in understanding English courses, lack of detailed material exposure, and laziness.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the improvement in students' speaking skill after implementing comic strips as a learning media. The subjects of this study were seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Surabaya, totaling 35 students in a class. This research was a Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was carried out in two cycles. The researcher conducted the Pre-Cycle before implementing the comic strip. There were four phases carried out in cycle 1 and cycle 2: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The difference occurred in the implementation of cycle 2. Observation and speaking practice tests were two methods the researchers used to collect data in this study. The KKM in English subjects at SMP Negeri 1 Surabaya is 85. The results of this study showed that there were 10 students, or 28.5% of students, who achieved test scores above the KKM. In cycle 1, there were 23 students, or 65.7% of students, who passed the KKM, and in cycle 2 there were 30 students, or 85.7% of students in class VII B, who scored above the KKM. Thus, comic strips are effective in improving students' speaking skills.

Abstract

The ability to recognize phonological patterns is essential for comprehending language and word formation. The issues are brought on by the absence of an English sound in other languages, particularly in Indonesia. This study looked into the connection between oral language competency and phonological awareness in adult English language learners. Although additional in-depth studies on the relationship between phonological awareness and oral language ability in adult EFL learners have not been widely conducted, this is based on a curiosity about whether phonological awareness still has a relationship with it. Researchers employed a correlation design and quantitative approaches. Sixty-two respondents from the third-year STKIP PGRI Jombang students in the English Education department program participated in this study. Purposive approach was employed to choose the responders. The information is derived from the midterm exam assignments. The phonology and speaking lecturer created the tool for a semester four course on academic settings. With the use of SPSS version 25, non-parametric Spearman's rho was used to examine the data.According to the outcomes of the data analysis, the value of the 2-tailed sig. is 0.463, which is greater than 0.05.Therefore, the researchers draw the conclusion that there is no meaningful relationship between spoken language ability and phonological awareness. They assumed that the outcome was due to the disparity in emphasis between the speaking test scoring criteria and the course materials for Speaking for Academic Setting.
