Abstract

This article aims at traversing historical traces, concepts, and characteristics of magical realism and how it is pertinent in literary analysis. The pivot of the conceptual framework of this article in on Faris’ perspective on magical realism. The approach of this study is grounded theory. The data are quotations taken from referential books and journals. The techniques of data collection are documentation and quoting. The technique of analysis is thematic interpretation. This article figures out that magical realism deconstructs the status of magical and the real into a somersaulting realm. Western historical narrative establishes the real through rationality and alienates the magical which is identical to the East, the Other, or the indigenous. This rational narrative is propagandized and turns to be power relation. Therefore, magical realism, through some literary works, deconstructs the rational perspective with logical-magical narrative as one of postcolonial studies.

Abstract

Kata kunci: Posmodernisme, sastra popular, siber sastra, interaktivitas This study aims to reveal the relation among postmodernism, pop literature, and cyber literature. By the understanding of postmodernism as a cultural movement, popular literature as escape literature, and cyber literature as a consequence of the shift in literary production that utilizes the internet technology, this study revives an assumption that the three have a fairly close relationship. The approach of this study is phenomenological with descriptive analysis techniques. Postmodernism results in a shift in decentralization process, so that the margin between the noble and the popular get blurred along with the phenomenon of social media that faces writer-reader interactivity as a new mode of literature, such as the use of social media (facebook, twitter, wattpad, etc.). Those offer intimacy between writers and readers, as well as how the discourse of freedom of writing becomes realistic without requirement toward intense competition that is full of power and legitimacy. Of course, the writer-reader interactivity is difficult to be realized in conventional literary production (print version). Keywords: Postmodernism, pop literature, cyber literature, interactivity

William Somerset Maugham's short story “The Appointment in Samarra” (1933) narrates a theme of how someone cannot avoid death, but the death is represented through a female figure. The research aims to expose a critic toward the representation of death through female character which is a cultivation of patriarchal ideas through literary works. This research used deconstruction framework as a reference to expose the paradox between woman and death. This was a qualitative research with an intertextuality approach. The data were in the form of quotations in the text and the source of the data was William Somerset Maugham’s short story “The Appointment in Samarra”. The data were collected through documentation technique and analysed with interpretation method. The results showed that the representation of death through woman was a patriarchal discourse and, with deconstructive reading, the narrative presented a paradoxical side; on one side, it presented that woman had horrible character, but on the other side, the horrible character implied power. Dismantling of the patriarchal discourse made the decon-structive process in this text became study of feminist deconstruction.
