Abstract

There are at least five phenomena which mark the complexity of maritime culture and fisherman tradition in Indonesia; social group of the maritime society, the development of economic sectors concerning sea products, social hierarchy in the daily maritime activities, the relationship between the elements of maritime culture and life sectors of the society, and the continuation and alteration of maritime culture's elements. In order to acquire a deep study on the complexity of maritime culture, there are several concepts used in this paper: Koentjaraningrat's concept of "three forms of culture", Sanjek's concept of "the dynamic culture and creation", and Vadya's concept of "contextual progressive explanatory method". The forms of maritime culture include the system of culture, belief, institution, and production technology. Meanwhile, the dynamics of maritime culture and fisherman tradition is determined not only by the internal factors but also the external forces, such as, innovation on technology, government policy, university interventions, nongovernmental organizations, donor institution, and regional, national, and even global market. Apparently, those external forces have brought negative impacts on the life of maritime society, marked by the decrease of economic prosperity, natural resources and sea environment. The negative impacts can be avoided by applying community-based management in the development of maritime culture

Abstract

This research discusses the assimilation process of Chinese moslem community in Kudus in the year 1961-1998 by using historical method. There are four factors which formed Chinese moslem community in Kudus, namely environment, education, marriage, and willingness. There are two unique typologies owned by Chinese moslem community, first, 'abangan'Chinese moslem and second, 'putihan' Chinese moslem. Behavioral configurations of social religiousness of abangan Chinese moslem still entangle ancestor's traditional procedures, such as doing worshiping to ancestor, celebrating Imiek, and installing to 'rajah' (tatto) Chinese. On the contrary, putihan Chinese moslem configurations have eliminated all ancestor's traditional procedures and they are active in running Islam teaching, like conducting shalat five times a day, holy fasting in ramadlan, zakat, and haji. The logical consequence from the assimilation process between Chinese moslem and native moslem is the decreasing orientation to ancestor's culture. The reduction orientation of the ancestor's culture can be seen from assimilation channels, such as name changing, marriage, communication and language, education, and earn living

Abstract

Language is an arbitrary system of sound used by members of a social group to cooperate, communicate, and identify one self. The paper discusses the use of language to identify personal identity, social class, ethnicity, and nationality. Language can determine the identity of an individual and a group. Language is also used to identify or to show the personal identity of a person. Furthermore, language shows the social class of a person. A person who comes from the low level class has a different language style from those of the higher level class. As ethnic identity, language can be used to denote ethnicity or the membership of a person or group in a certain ethnic group. Language can also become the national identity as well. Thus, every country has its own national language

Timor culture is one of the enchanting culture in Indonesia. The relationship between Protestant religion and the local culture has created a new culture. In the traditional society, the development of modern culture may lead to a sensitive situation in which new values confront the old existing values.
