Abstract

Islamic civilization has developed dynamically and continuously interacted with local cultures through a selective process of acculturation. In Indonesia, particularly in South Sulawesi, the tradition of mappatabe'-which involves saying “tabe'” while slightly bowing as a sign of respect toward elders-represents a clear example of the integration between local culture and Islamic values. Nevertheless, this practice has generated fiqh-related debates concerning the limits of human respect so that it does not resemble acts of worship such as rukūʿ or sujūd, which are exclusively devoted to Allah SWT. This study aims to examine and analyze the perspectives of the four Sunni schools of Islamic jurisprudence Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi‘i, and Hanbali) regarding the mappatabe' tradition as a local cultural practice within the framework of Islamic law. The research employs a library-based qualitative method with a normative-fiqh approach, supported by ex post facto and descriptive methods to explore causal relations and to describe the practice of mappatabe' in its social and legal contexts. Data were collected from primary sources, including the Qur'an, the Prophet's hadiths, classical fiqh texts of the four schools, works of contemporary scholars, and relevant religious fatwas, complemented by secondary sources such as academic books and scholarly journal articles. The findings indicate that the mappatabe' tradition is fundamentally permissible as long as it is understood as a form of social etiquette and respect, does not involve elements of servitude or worship, does not resemble the physical acts of rukuʿ or sujud, and does not promote discrimination among individuals. Therefore, mappatabe' can be regarded as a form of cultural acculturation that aligns with the principles of Islamic law and reflects noble moral values in social life.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the promotion of emigration of the Javanese people to Lampung using a cultural approach. There are two main issues in this article: first, how early emigrants who had already settled in Lampung promoted the overseas land (tanah sabrang) in Java; second, how the Javanese cultural approach could attract the interest and trust of the Javanese people to emigrate. The method used in writing this article is the historical method, which includes the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, thus producing a historical narrative that is chronological, causal, and imaginative. The results of this research show that the cultural approach through sending back Javanese who had previously migrated to Lampung to return to Java, staging ketoprak performances, sending gamelan to Lampung as gifts, and featuring wayang figures in films about tanah sabrang, successfully captured the attention of the Javanese people and had a significant positive impact on the trust level of prospective emigrants who were to be relocated to the emigration land in Lampung.

Abstract

This study discusses the Lamongan flood disaster in 1968, which was the largest disaster in the history of Lamongan Regency. This event had a huge impact on the people of Lamongan, both in terms of material and non-material losses. This study aims to determine the impacts and forms of cooperation between elements of society in dealing with the 1968 flood disaster. This study uses historical methods consisting of heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography, supported by the availability of adequate primary sources through newspapers. The results of the study reveal that the floods that hit the Lamongan area demonstrated the resilience of the community through mutual cooperation, independent resource management, and seeking assistance from surrounding areas. These findings illustrate how social solidarity and community strength were the main factors that supported their resilience in the midst of extreme environmental pressures.

Abstract

Islam always conveys universal messages. It embodies the values of humanity and strong egalitarianism. This study will provide an in-depth examination of traditional Mecca culture and the process of social reconstruction toward an egalitarian society in Mecca, Medina's traditional culture and the process of social reconstruction in Medina, and the relevance of an egalitarian Islamic society in the modern era. This research uses historical research to uncover events that occurred in the past. The noble values of Islam conveyed during the da'wah process in Mecca failed to be realized. Complex problems were the main basis for this failure. The Medina period demonstrated the success of social reconstruction carried out by Islam. Human equality, religious tolerance, social justice, and other human rights were truly upheld. The points of agreement contained in the Medina Charter were truly implemented and adhered to by all residents of Medina at that time. The values of egalitarianism in Islam, the democratic process of social reconstruction, the persistent struggle for humanitarian values, and the consistency and firmness in upholding agreed-upon rules, as practiced by the Prophet Muhammad and his companions in the early Islamic period, both in Mecca and Medina, are concrete examples of what modern societies can do to realize an egalitarian society. Upholding human rights is a necessity, as every human being is inherently born free.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the hadith thought of Abdur Rauf al-Singkili and its influence on the formation of academic traditions in Aceh in the 17th century. The problem raised in this study is how the hadith thought of Abdur Rauf al-Singkili, combined with the teachings of Sufism, was able to form a moderate and distinctive Acehnese educational approach and contribute to the development of academic traditions. The method used in this study is qualitative with the type of library research. In addition, this study uses historical analysis and Karl Mannheim's theory of sociology of knowledge to reveal how the social, cultural, and political contexts of the time influenced the thoughts and intellectual activities of Abdur Rauf al-Singkili. The results of the study indicate that the hadith thought of Abdur Rauf al-Singkili played a strategic role in building academic traditions in Aceh through the dissemination of hadith knowledge that is moderate, integrative and inclusive. This contribution not only strengthens hadith studies, but is also able to address socio-political issues at that time, while forming a broader scientific network in the archipelago. The perspective of Karl Mannheim's sociology of knowledge theory emphasizes that Abdur Rauf al-Singkili's thoughts were born from the religious, heterogeneous and dynamic social conditions of Aceh, and were influenced by intellectual interactions with Middle Eastern scientific traditions and the needs of local society.

Abstract

implementation of the Saudi Vision 2030 strategic agenda has triggered significant socio-cultural transformations, driving a reconfiguration of national identity that is manifested in the evolution of men's fashion aesthetics. This study addresses a lacuna in existing literature, which tends to position traditional clothing as static cultural artifacts, with the objective of comprehensively analyzing the transformation of design, function, and symbolic meaning of three primary garment elements: thobe, Ghutra, and Bisht. Employing a qualitative approach through a systematic literature review of historical sources, policy documents, and contemporary studies, this research maps the evolution of these garments from the pre-modern era to the present. The findings indicate that these three elements have undergone a fundamental paradigm shift: the thobe has transformed from a utilitarian desert garment into a symbol of urban professionalism; the Ghutra has evolved from a physical protector into an attribute of hyper-nationalism and youth stylistic expression; while the Bisht has experienced democratization from a symbol of elite exclusivity to an inclusive instrument of cultural diplomacy (soft power). This study concludes that modernization in Saudi Arabia does not erode tradition but rather effects a cultural recontextualization, wherein fashion functions as a dynamic medium in the negotiation of a national identity that is adaptive to global demands.

Abstract

Globalization has brought dynamic changes to Malay culture, where Malay identity faces challenges from external influences, modernization, and cultural commodification. Lifestyle changes resulting from modernization and urbanization can threaten the sustainability of cultural heritage. Like other elements of Malay culture, traditional houses, including performing arts, are vulnerable to commodification where their meaning is transformed into mere objects of consumption. Facing crises and hegemonic threats, Malay culture tends to refer back to history to rediscover "identity" and rebuild self-confidence, so that Malay society does not lose its collective identity, but can adapt to change while still upholding good values. The influence of modernity can result in changes in values, namely the entry of new values from outside due to developments in science and technology which can shake and fade the noble values of Malay personality. Malay society is required to be able to adapt to modernization without losing its identity, by making religion and culture its foundation. Malay culture always adheres to the saying "Adat bersendi syarak, syarak bersendikan Kitabullah". The aim of this research is to find out the theoretical definition of Malay Personality and Modernity, and to find out the characteristics of Malay Personality and its development and challenges in the current era of Modernization. Meanwhile, the benefits of writing this paper can increase knowledge about Malay Personality and the influence of Modernity.

Abstract

Quality education requires innovative teachers in managing the learning process. In the context of Islamic education, the Al-Qur'an memorization program is an important innovation that focuses not only on memorization but also on character building and improving the quality of learning. This study aims to describe teacher innovations in optimizing the quality of learning through the tahfidz program at SMA Muhammadiyah Pontren Imam Syuhodo, and to identify obstacles encountered in its implementation. This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data were obtained through interviews, observations, and documentation involving tahfidz teachers and school officials. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive model which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results show that teachers innovated in four aspects of learning, namely method innovation through the combination of sima'an, independent memorization, and talaqqi; media innovation by utilizing Al-Qur'an manuscripts and audio murottal; strategy innovation through setting flexible memorization targets, providing awards, and tahfidz camp activities; and evaluation innovation through weekly evaluations using mutaba'ah books. The main obstacle faced is the limited time allocated for memorization within the school curriculum. Despite this, teachers continue to strive to develop adaptive strategies to maintain the quality of memorization learning.
