Abstract

This research aimed to empirically examine public perceptions toward the use of niqab among female students at Islamic higher education institutions, as well as to explore the social responses, stigma, and coping strategies experienced by niqab-wearing students. The study focused on identifying the motivations underlying the decision to wear the niqab, community attitudes toward this practice, and its psychological and social implications. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews and observations involving female students who wear niqab at the State Islamic Higher Education Institution (PTKIN) in Parepare City, South Sulawesi. The informants were selected using purposive sampling techniques. Data were analyzed inductively by organizing the findings into thematic categories related to motivation, social perception, stigma, and individual responses. The results indicate that the decision to wear the niqab is influenced by various factors, including religious commitment, personal comfort, environmental influence, religious understanding, and personal life experiences. Community responses toward niqab-wearing students vary, ranging from acceptance and neutrality to negative stigma and discrimination, which are often associated with assumptions of radicalism, social exclusivity, and perceived limitations in social and professional life. Despite these challenges, the female students demonstrated adaptive coping strategies, such as maintaining positive attitudes, strengthening religious commitment, engaging in social interactions, and exemplifying moral conduct as efforts to counter negative perceptions and gradually build social acceptance.

Abstract

The development of social media has transformed Islamic preaching practices from one-way communication into a dialogical space involving negotiation of religious authority and audience participation. This study aims to analyze the digital preaching model based on the pesantren tradition developed by Gus Yusuf Chudlori on social media and its implications for the construction of religious authority and the audience's understanding of religiosity. This study uses a qualitative approach with thematic content analysis of preaching posts on YouTube and Instagram @gusyusufchannel for the period January–June 2025, complemented by in-depth interviews with the account manager. The research results show that Gus Yusuf's preaching represents a form of negotiation between traditional pesantren religious authority and the logic of social media, characterized by the use of classical book references, communicative language, a moderate approach, and optimization of platform features to build audience engagement. This finding indicates that digital da'wah based on pesantren does not experience a degradation of authority, but rather undergoes a transformation through the adaptive practice of mediatization of religion. This study contributes to the development of digital da'wah and religious communication studies in the new media era.

Abstract

Diverse beliefs in society often pose a challenge to social stability if not managed through inclusive cultural means. This study aims to analyze the role of Javanese Wayang art as a social glue that constructs harmony between Muslims and Catholics in Kolam Village. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews with village religious authority staff, cultural practitioners who understand the philosophy of wayang, and residents actively involved in interfaith interactions, and documentation collecting photo archives of activities, and relevant literature to support the validity of the findings. The analysis was conducted using the Miles & Huberman interactive model through the stages of reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results show that Javanese Wayang functions as a "third space" that facilitates cross-sectoral loyalty (dual loyalty), where cultural identity as a Javanese community transcends religious dogmatic barriers. This art triggers positive social responses in the form of mutual cooperation and strengthening of collective identity. This study concludes that the integration of religious moderation values through local wisdom is an effective strategy in maintaining the stability of a multicultural society.

Abstract

This study examines the virality of criticism of the authority of Islamic scholars (kyai) in a Trans7 report widely discussed on TikTok, and how power and gender relations in the context of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) are reproduced and negotiated through digital discourse. Drawing on Michel Foucault's theory of power relations, this study aims to understand how religious authority is constructed, maintained, and questioned through public interactions on social media. The study uses a qualitative approach with Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis method, with data consisting of one TikTok video containing the report and four purposively selected netizen comments as the primary units of analysis. The results show that netizen criticism functions as a counter-discourse that challenges the traditional construction of Islamic boarding school (kyai) authority, particularly on issues of abuse of power, lack of accountability in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) institutions, and gender inequality. The virality of TikTok plays a significant role in expanding the reach of criticism, creating a participatory space that allows the public to intervene in religious narratives previously dominated by Islamic boarding school authorities. These findings confirm that the digital space has shifted the relationship between Islamic boarding school (kyai) and santri and opened up new mechanisms for the public to evaluate religious practices. This research contributes to the sociology of religion by demonstrating that power relations are no longer static but are continually negotiated through digital discourse. The implications of these findings emphasize the importance of careful production and regulation of religious content on social media, as well as the need to develop a more contextual analytical framework to understand the dynamics of power relations in Indonesian Islamic society.

Abstract

This article is motivated by the need for pesantren to strengthen inclusive attitudes amid diverse student backgrounds and contemporary social dynamics that may foster exclusivity. It examines how cultural capital and social identity function as conceptual foundations for creating a more open and harmonious pesantren environment. Using a library research with a conceptual approach, this article draws on peer-reviewed journal articles, books, and relevant prior studies. Literature was collected through systematic searches using the keywords “cultural capital,” “social identity,” and “pesantren” in databases such as Scopus, Web Of Scene, Ebsco, Doaj, Google Scholar, with sources selected based on relevance and credibility. Data were analyzed through content analysis, including data reduction, thematic classification, interpretation of conceptual relationships, and the formulation of theoretical conclusions. The study proposes a comprehensive model explaining social dynamics and strategies for strengthening inclusivity in modern pesantren. Validity was ensured through careful source selection, theoretical triangulation, and verification of original texts. The findings indicate that pesantren values, norms, and traditions can foster solidarity when aligned with students’ social identity formation; however, misalignment may generate social distance and group dominance. Therefore, strengthening inclusivity requires character development, effective social interaction management, and the cultivation of an adaptive and moderate institutional culture.

Abstract

Social relationships play an important role in the lives of elderly empty-nest couples. Empty nest refers to a situation in which children have left the family home, leaving elderly couples to live together on their own. Under these circumstances, some parents often experience feelings of sadness, loneliness, and social isolation, which can have significant impacts on their lives, both emotionally and in terms of their social relationships. The purpose of this study is to understand the dynamics of social relations experienced by elderly couples in facing the empty nest condition. This research employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The informants consisted of elderly couples, village officials, and community members selected purposively based on their involvement and understanding of the social conditions of the elderly. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings reveal that the empty nest condition brings emotional and social changes to elderly couples, including reduced family interaction and feelings of loneliness. Nevertheless, the elderly couples were able to adapt by engaging in daily activities such as gardening, trading, and participating in social activities within the community. Social relationships established through interactions with spouses, neighbors, and the surrounding community became important sources of social and emotional support in maintaining their daily lives.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the involvement of Islamic mass organizations in mining management in Indonesia from the perspective of Islamic environmental ethics and to identify the ethical dilemmas arising from such involvement. This research employs a qualitative approach using a library research design combined with normative-critical analysis. Data were collected from academic sources, including journal articles, books, and policy documents, and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify key issues related to Islamic environmental ethics, extractivism, and the institutional roles of Islamic organizations. The findings reveal that Islamic environmental ethics is grounded in strong normative principles, such as khalifah (stewardship), amanah (trust), mizan (balance), and the prohibition of fasād (destruction). However, these values are not consistently implemented in institutional practices when confronted with extractive economic logic. The involvement of Islamic organizations in the mining sector generates ethical dilemmas characterized by tensions between religious mandates and economic interests, as well as the risks of moral co-optation and symbolic legitimation. These findings highlight the importance of positioning Islamic environmental ethics as a critical framework for evaluating economic practices and public policies affecting ecological sustainability.

Abstract

The main focus of this study is to examine the role of family socialization as the primary agent in shaping adolescent behavior and its relationship with juvenile delinquency in rural communities. This study aims to analyze the process of socialization within the family and the factors influencing juvenile delinquency in North Lemito Village, Lemito District, Pohuwato Regency. This study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach to gain an in-depth understanding of family interaction dynamics and adolescent behavior within a social context. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation techniques, with informants selected using purposive sampling, including parents, adolescents, and community leaders. The data analysis technique used an interactive model consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that family socialization has not been carried out optimally, as reflected in the lack of open communication between parents and children, inconsistent parental supervision, and ineffective instillation of moral and religious values. In addition, environmental factors such as peer influence, alcohol consumption, and weak social control within the community further contributed to juvenile delinquency. Therefore, this study emphasizes that the family plays an essential role as the primary socialization agent in preventing juvenile delinquency, highlighting the need to strengthen communication, supervision, and value inculcation within the family in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the concept of moral education in the book Bidayatul Hidayah by Imam Al-Ghazali and examine its relevance to the implementation of the Independent Curriculum in strengthening students' character education. The research uses a qualitative approach with the type of library research and the content analysis approach. The primary data source is in the form of the book Bidayatul Hidayah by Imam Al-Ghazali, while the secondary data source is obtained from scientific articles, academic books, and official documents of the Independent Curriculum published in the 2020–2025 range. The data collection technique was carried out through documentation studies and in-depth literature review, while the data analysis used the Miles and Huberman interactive model which included data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn. The results of the study show that the concept of moral education in Bidayatul Hidayah includes morality to Allah, morality towards oneself, morality towards fellow humans, and manners in the educational process. The findings of the study also show a strong relevance between the values of moral education of Imam Al-Ghazali and the dimension of the Pancasila Student Profile in the Independent Curriculum, especially in the aspects of faith, piety, noble character, independence, and social responsibility. This research contributes to strengthening the study of classical Islamic education in the context of contemporary character education and provides practical implications for the development of morality-based learning in a formal education environment.
