Abstract

The social and economic life of fishermen in Pondok Besi, Bengkulu City, is full of diverse and complex problems. Fishermen are often trapped in a cycle of poverty due to changes in income, climate change, and limited access to technology and information. The poverty rate in Indonesia in September 2022 was 9.57%, with Bengkulu as the seventh poorest province in all of Indonesia and second in Sumatra, according to Statistics Indonesia (2023). This suggests that fishing communities, which rely heavily on marine resources, face economic problems. The focus of this research is the way social capital can improve the economic sustainability of fishermen. Data was collected through observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews using a descriptive qualitative approach. Results show that fishermen in Pondok Besi earn between IDR 150,000 and IDR 700,000 per day, with an average income of IDR 1,000,000 per month. Their income is highly influenced by seasonal changes. Strong social capital is demonstrated by trust, social norms and extensive social networks. They play an important role in supporting fishers' economic activities and overcoming economic challenges. Improving the welfare and economic sustainability of fishers in this area is crucial.

Abstract

This study analyzes the moderate preaching of Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II as a social resistance strategy against colonialism, emphasizing inclusive values, tolerance, and respect for diversity. The Sultan’s preaching focused on spiritual aspects, strengthening social solidarity through non-violent approaches, and integrating local cultures. A qualitative historical approach was used to explore the implementation of the Sultan’s preaching in the Palembang Sultanate and during his exile in Ternate. The findings reveal that the Sultan’s moderate preaching became an effective tool in building social harmony and non-violent resistance. The teachings of the Sammaniyah Order disseminated by the Sultan strengthened the local community’s religious identity while creating strong and sustainable cross-cultural solidarity. These findings affirm the relevance of religious moderation as an adaptive instrument for social resistance, both in the context of colonialism and the challenges of diversity in the modern era. In conclusion, the religious moderation practiced by Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II offers a leadership model capable of fostering social harmony. It is highly relevant for resolving conflicts peacefully in various global contexts

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out how the Toba Batak people perceive the process of mangain Boru (raising) the clan in Toba Batak marriages in Lae Parira Village, Lae Parira District, Dairi Regency. The method used in this study is a qualitative method, to understand what phenomena are experienced by research subjects holistically, by describing them with words and language, based on findings in the field. The results of the research show that the perception of the Toba Batak people regarding the process of mangain boru (raising) the clan in the marriage of the Toba Batak tribe is classified into two parts, where people who are mangclassified as understanding the mangain traditional tradition already know the direction and purpose of carrying out the ain tradition and know the meaning in its implementation. the mangain tradition, this can be a point of pride for the Toba Batak people as the world becomes increasingly aware of the traditional traditions of the Toba Batak people, and people who are classified as not understanding the mangain tradition This is of course a bad value for the Toba Batak community because it only symbolizes the Toba Batak community, but the lack of knowledge about the mangain tradition is caused by itself because many of the Toba Batak people follow the tradition and are unable to understand what they see, even those who follow the process

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of women in the development of the culinary tourism village of Pasar Dhoplang located in Pandan Village, Slogohimo District, Wonogiri Regency. Pasar Dhoplang is one form of initiation from the women's community through Dasawisma Mawar Melati to form economic activities to improve the economy of the Dusun Kembar household. This descriptive qualitative study analyzes data systematically to draw conclusions. Data collection methods are primary data and secondary data such as interviews, observations, and documentation to obtain appropriate data. This study shows that the development of women in tourism development has a strategic role related to the flexible role of women in the domestic sphere, as well as being able to play a role in the management structure of Dhoplang Market. The application of women's roles through the triple rule outlined by Caroline Moser, namely reproductive roles, productive roles, and community roles. Through the involvement of women's active roles in the management of Pasar Dhoplang, it becomes an important factor in supporting the development of traditional Javanese culinary tourism villages. This study also examines the obstacles faced by women in the development of Pasar Dhoplang such as land ownership, inequality of participation within the village scope, and limited land in Pasar Dhoplang which hinders the empowerment of women in Pandan Village as a whole. Thus, the results of this study indicate that in developing regional tourism, there needs to be support from the role of women in its management structure in order to have an impact on improving the household economy.

Abstract

The Sajen Among tradition in the villages of Sekarpuro, Asrikaton, and Tanggung in Malang Regency is a Javanese cultural ritual rich in symbolic and spiritual meaning. This study examines its existence, its symbols, and its significance through a qualitative approach. Based on in-depth interviews with six informants across the three villages, the research reveals distinct definitions and purposes of Sajen Among in each community: in Sekarpuro, it serves as an offering to ancestral spirits; in Asrikaton, as protection for spiritual kin; and in Tanggung, as an expression of gratitude. The ritual elements such as coffee, water, rice, traditional snacks, betel leaves, tobacco, cigarettes, incense, areca nuts, whiting, and uncaria, each embody unique Javanese cultural values. Viewed through the lens of symbolic interactionism, the meaning of these offerings is constructed through social interactions, including grave pilgrimages and strict adherence to ritual protocols. Despite challenges to its preservation, such as stigmatization as “musyrik” and pressures of modernization, Sajen Among continues to endure as a vital expression of cultural and spiritual identity

Abstract

Laweyan is one of the oldest villages in Surakarta known as a center for batik production. With a long history and a network of active production houses, this area holds great potential in the development of culture-based creative economy. This research examines the role of women in the batik production process and the adaptive strategies they implement in facing various obstacles, using Moser's development theory which encompasses anti-poverty approaches, empowerment, and efficiency. Through a qualitative approach and in-depth interviews with women batik makers, this study shows that women play a strategic role in household economic aspects and cultural social sustainability. They contribute to poverty reduction through income from batik (anti-poverty), strengthening capacity through financial management and skills enhancement (empowerment), and creating efficiency in production through division of labor and time management (efficiency). The strategies implemented include organizing daily finances, balancing work and rest time allocation, and improving product quality. These findings enrich the study of gender and the creative economy by emphasizing how women's work in the traditional sector can be seen as a form of agency as well as a contribution to community based sustainable development.
