Abstract

This research was motivated by the frequent appearance of news about social issues, such as tidal floods caused by eclipses, which are linked to Newton's theory of gravity. A teaching material was developed that integrated the issue of tidal flooding with physics concepts. The study aimed to determine how scientific literacy among students is influenced by using teaching materials in the context of socioscientific issues. The research methodology was quasi-experimental, utilizing a pretest-posttest design with one group. The study was conducted in the Physics Education Department at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University in Serang, Indonesia. The research sample consisted of fifty "Physics Education" majors enrolled in Fundamental Physics I. A scientific literacy test instrument was used as the research tool, and professional validation of the instrument yielded a validation score of 82.45%. The study concluded that teaching materials focused on socioscientific issues related to Newton's theory of gravity positively impacted students' scientific literacy skills. The students' scientific literacy showed an increase of 0.34, categorized as a moderate improvement.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills are one of the essential 21st-century competencies that students must possess, as outlined by the Indonesian Ministry of Education's competency standards for graduation. The Minister of Education and Culture Decree No. 56 of 2022, which mandates the implementation of the independent curriculum, has prompted schools to change their existing curricula. This necessitates research to provide an overview of students' critical thinking skills as developed by schools. This study aims to describe the critical thinking skills of public high school students in Makassar City in the subject of Physics. The research is a quantitative descriptive survey, with the main variable being critical thinking skills, which are measured through three indicators: analysis, interpretation, and inference. The research instrument used was a six-item essay test. The population for this study consisted of all public high school students in Makassar City studying Newton's laws of motion, specifically students from SMAN 2 Makassar, SMAN 4 Makassar, SMAN 5 Makassar, SMAN 8 Makassar, and SMAN 16 Makassar. Using purposive sampling, the sample included all students from one class at each of the five schools in the population. The results indicate that 75.50% of the students' critical thinking skills in solving physics problems fall into the low category. The specific skills in analysis, interpretation, and inference are also categorized as low. Additionally, female students demonstrated a higher ratio of critical thinking skills compared to male students. In conclusion, the critical thinking skills of high school students in Makassar City remain at a low level.

Abstract

The background of this research is to produce professional teachers with digital competency through training in making web-based learning media. This study aims to analyze how effective the training on teachers' knowledge in generating web-based learning media is to produce professional teachers. This research used a quantitative study with the one-group pre-test/post-test design approach. This research was conducted by the 20 teachers at SMAN 2 Tondano who trained in making web-based learning media integrated by a project-based learning model (PjBL). Based on data analysis with the N-gain test, this study concludes that web-based learning media creation training on teachers at SMAN 2 Tondano has improved teacher knowledge in a medium category, with an average increase of 43%. The data has also been confirmed through a hypothetical test showing that the α<0.05 significance value indicates that training activities are running effectively. These results indicate that training can improve teachers' knowledge, support a better learning process, and make teachers more professional with digital competency.

Abstract

Attitudes plays an important role in influencing student achievement in physics education. However, there is limited study investigating the effect of students’ attitudes on physics achievement in Indonesia. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the correlation between students' attitudes towards physics learning achievement. The research used a quantitative descriptive approach through survey methods. The research sample was obtained by simple random sampling of as many as 35 students of class XI IPA 2, consisting of 17 men and 18 women. Data collection used a student attitude questionnaire instrument. The study showed that student’s attitudes have an average of 61 with the highest student's attitude being 90 and the lowest student's attitude being 30. The results of student achievement in the form of physics test scores have an average of 67 with the highest score being 100 and the lowest score being 36. The results of the correlation test analysis obtained a score significance (p< 0.05) with a correlation coefficient of 0.576. So, it can be concluded that there is a positive correlation and a fairly strong category between students' physics attitudes and students' physics achievements. This shows that the higher the student's attitude towards physics, the higher the student's achievement will be.
