Abstract

This research aims at finding kinds of blend and describing the formation of blend in snack names found in supermarket around Sukoharjo, Central Java. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. Data of this research are the blend which are used in snack brands. The data are taken from several shops and supermarkets such as Indomaret, Alfamart, Mitra, Jumbo, and Hyperrmart in Sukoharjo area. This research uses observation and writing techniques. The data analysis consists of data reduction, data display, and data verification. The data reduction is done by reducing snack brands with no blend in the data collection process. The research uses triangulation theory to deal with the types of blend and the formation of blend. The research finds 62 data of snack brands which use blend. There are three kinds of blend, such as blend with clipping (51 data), blend with phonemic overlapping (7 data), and blend with overlapping and clipping (4 data). Most of the blends are blends with clipping because they are the easiest way to create a new word using blend. Meanwhile, there are 13 ways of blend formation.

Abstract

In linguistic typology, the terms “tense”, “aspect”, “mood/modality” are commonly used and recognized as verb paradigms or verbal systems (morphosyntactically) as well as verb semantic aspects (semantically) in describing language characteristics. Those terminologies, however, are treated as equivalents, while theoretically they remain problematic. Tense and aspect belong to grammatical categories, while modality is a semantic notion. There is also another term ‘mood’ that is often misunderstood as the synonym of modality of which they are basically two distinct yet related concepts. This paper then aims at revisiting those terms above by using the terms “temporality’, “aspectuality, and “modality” and investigating the realizations of those notions in English and Indonesian in order to obtain comprehensive understanding. This study employed contrastive analysis to compare English and Indonesian. The data were collected from two synchronic corpora, Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) for English data and Wortschatz Leipzig Corpora Collection (WLCC) for Indonesian data. The results of the analysis show that English and Indonesia have distinct realizations of temporality, aspectuality, and modality of which English is more various in manifesting temporality, while Indonesian is more various in manifesting aspectuality. As for modality, English has more realizations, including core modals and quasi-modals. It can be concluded that basically English is morphosyntactically and syntactically richer than Indonesian, but Indonesian is morphologically richer than English.

Abstract

The translation of the pronoun persona “I” on Indonesian translation novels is very dynamic and varied. This is interesting when simple and static forms in French are finally able to be translated into varied and unique forms, without breaking away from the rules of language that apply in Indonesian. This study examines the “I” figure contained in the construction of the medial diathesis of Indonesian which is translated from two French novels: Pendidikan Istri by Apsanti Djokosujatno from l’Ecole des Femmes by Andre Gide and Lara Kusapa by Ken Nadya from Bonjour Tristesse by Francoise Sagan. The critical linguistic approach is chosen in this study to see the ideology behind the “I” construction. From the analysis of this study, it is found that “I” construction is an important strategy carried out by the translators to construct the translators’ ideology in translating reflexive medial diathesis forms. Linguistically, the translations are carried out with positive lexicalisation, adverb addition, idiom use, nominalization, and the substitution of the “I” character with other pronouns when the “I” character is in a predominant position. Extralinguistically, the translations are related to the factors of creativity, ideology, and the context of the target language.

Abstract

Stand Up Comedy is a type of single joke because comedians perform monologue on a stage alone and rely on their gestures. This research is to answer these problems: what are the pragmatic strategy, linguistic strategy, humor function, and the community's response to humor strategies of children comedians in the Stand Up Comedy program? This study uses descriptive qualitative method. This study uses three stages, namely the stage of the data collection, the data analysis stage, and the stage of presenting the results of data analysis. The methods used in the data collection stage are observation and interview. The data analysis phase uses the pragmatic equivalent method. The stage of presenting the results of data analysis uses informal methods. The pragmatic of the strategies that are dominantly used are presuppositions, violation of maxim, and implicature. The dominant strategies of linguistic that are found are nonsense, ridicule, irony, and misunderstanding. The dominant function of humor that is found tends to give an understanding to the community to find solutions to a problem through ways that are conveyed pleasantly. However, the community judges that some of the words uttered tend to give a bad example because they seem impolite and patronizing.

The data of this research are conversation transcripts of Australians consisting three males and one female and being analysed analytically to find the use of slang. Observational technique was used to gather the data. The researcher taped the conversation and transcribed them to make the data analysis easier. Slang is formed into a morphological and semantic process. The morphological processes consist of derivation, clipping, blending, acronym, and alliteration. The semantic process consists of generalization, metaphor, specialization, and arbitrary process. The use of slang affects the society in terms of social and communication function. Knowing this intensely helps non natives to get close and increase more understanding in communicating with Australians.

Abstract

The material object of this paper is a short story written by Jubran Khalil Jubran, entitled Khalīl al-Kāfir. The formal object is Jubran's criticism of religious construction from the transcendentalist perspective. It aims to answer the question why Jubran criticized religious construction in his writing. As a migrant Arabic writer, who has the experiences of living in the Western and Eastern world, Jubran is able to critically read the construction of religion in the Christian tradition. His criticism is expressed in Khalīl al-Kāfir, which tells his protest and rebellion against the religious leaders as well as the exclusivity and formality of religion which eliminate its spiritual dimension as the soul of human mental enlightenment. The analysis shows that Jubran criticized the sacred authority of priests and monks because of his views that God is immanent and existent everywhere. The immanence of God implies that He is being a power in every human soul. Meanwhile, His existence everywhere emphasizes the over-soul of God's oneness with humans and nature, the oneness of God with all creatures in the universe.
