Abstract

The question whether communicating message can be done correctly in a translation process is a problematic issue. The process of translating is not only doing the conversion of text from one language to another, but also communicating the message, which is culturally bounded. Translators always risk inappropriate spill-over of source-language idioms and forms into the target-language translation. On the other hand, spill-overs have imported useful source language calques and loanwords that have enriched the target languages. Indeed, translators have helped substantially to shape the languages into which they have translated.

Abstract

To exist, a cosmopolitan literary movement is a must for a national literature. This means that the national literature must consider the entire humankind as more meaningful than its group, region or state. Cosmopolitanism views all races and all continents with the same human interest and concern. In additions, two consequences come up with, the influenced literature and/or the influencing literature. As a dynamic organism, Arabic literature has been cosmopolitanizing itself especially since its reviving age back in the end of 18th century and in the first quarter of 19 century. New genres, themes, styles, theories as well as criticisms have been adopted. By doing so, Arabic literature has come to the same level as other literary cannons in the world. In turn, cosmopolitanism of Arabic literature nourishes the comparative literary study.

Abstract

Danarto’s Rembulan di Dasar Kolam (The Moon Beneath the Pond) tells about a wife’s sacrifice in an unfortunate situation. The wife, is an unfortunate woman whose husband cheats and treats her disrespectfully. Yet, her spirituality endures her in such situation. Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics theory proposes the hypothesis that the analysis of symbol is a guide to the analysis of text, and the other way around. Both must be submitted to a process of metamorphosis or dialectical phenomena. The result of this analysis is the emergence of symbolical meaning in various terms. Rabi’ah becomes a symbol of a wife’s strength. Her wisdom and personality give the way out to her household problems. Her social status as well as gender role is the symbol that religiosity belongs to anyone despite one’s social status. From this character, it can be seen that the knowledge of spiritualism is aimed not only vertically (to God) but also horizontally (to humanity). The title Rembulan or the Moon symbolizes the wife, because, despite her condition- symbolized as the pond-she endures and still gives her shine, like the moon.

Abstract

This article aims to provide a short biography of Iraqi Arab poet, Nāzik al-Malā`ikah, and her thoughts about free verse (al-syi’r al-h} urr). In this paper, the writer applies her personal life history. The results of this article show that Nāzik is a popular figure in modern Arabic literature. She occupies a prominent position not only because of her innovative experimental poetry, but also because of her critical theories. Since the publication of her first collection, ‘Āsyiqah al-Lail (1947),—which contains one of her best known works entitledKūlīra—she has contributed toward transforming Arabic poetry in terms of its orientation and structure. This is reflected equally in her works and in her critical theorization of the new poetic form known as free verse (al-syi’r al-h} urr). In 1949, she published her second volume of poems, Syazāyā wa Ramād, and prefaced it with a theory of new poetry metrics. Nāzik defines free verse (alsyi’r al-hurr) as any poetry that departs from the twohemistich line system and that employs the taf'ilah “foot”. And, the basic of the taf'ilah poetry is the unity of metrical foot. In her theory of new poetry metrics, she recommended two kinds of meters. They are pure meters (al-buhūr al-sāfiyah) and mixed meters (al-buhūr al-mamzūjah).

The study concludes that the novel Sāq al-Bambū offers three social moral values and a religious moral value. The first moral value is that the gamble will plunge himself and his family, even his own descendants, to live in misery, and these problems will never-end. The second moral value is that the marital relationship which is conducted outside a legitimate marriage will not only spoil and closed his future but also afflict his children with the various conflicts and pressures of the environment. The third moral value is that belief in superstition will preoccupy the attention, energy, and mind. In fact, a lot of things and a lot of innocent parties will be considered negative. The fourth moral value is that to keep self-esteem and dignity is not necessarily by persecuting others.

Abstract

Seribu Satu Malam (One thousand and One Nights or The Arabian Nights) is a renowned tale through out the world, which has been translated into languages. As a literarywork, it certainly has a unique structural characteristic. The aim of this paper is to analyze the unique structure of Seribu Satu Malam based on Levi-Strauss’ Structuralism. It analyses one of the Seribu Satu Malam stories as a sample; that is Kisah Pedagang dan Jin (the story of the trader and the genie). In the stories of Kisah Pedagang dan Jin, its structure can be found in the all of Seribu Satu Malam stories. This study reveals the threads of ceritheme, which connects one story to the others until those stories appeared as a unity. The stories are seen as variations of a single theme, which is how the characters saw their own life and solved their problems. This becomes the stories’ hidden structures.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the sentences based on the basic sentence patterns of Indonesian and predicate calculus. These approaches put the predicate as a core component in the sentence structure. The object of study is focused on declarative sentences of Indonesian. The data analysis consists of several stages. Basic sentence patterns of Indonesian consist of identifying the type of sentences, identifying the elements forming sentences, and putting on elements which are based on basic sentence patterns of Indonesian. Predicate calculus consists of identifying atomic or compound propositions, determining the predicate and other components, defining a form of expression predicate calculus, and making a notation function. The results showed that the basic sentence pattern analysis only identifies the internal elements in a single sentence, while the predicate calculus can as well identifies the internal elements of a single or compound sentence.
