Abstract

It’s impossible to discuss American literature without mentioning Eugene O’Neill, including his renowned drama Mourning Becomes Electra (MBE). MBE is a drama that describes a Puritan family called the Mannons. The main characters in MBE live in a strict and severe Puritan society. Both the Mannons and Puritans establish a family and community on the same principles, the belief in covenant, a tenet that is taught by John Calvin. They also have the same dream about a new land, New Jerusalem for Puritans and Blessed Island for the Mannons. The article aims at disclosing the constricting Puritans society in New England and the cruelty of the central characters in MBE. In addition, the way in which Eugene O’Neill creates tragic characters at the end of the drama can be related to the decline of Puritanism. Goldmann’s sociology of literature is applied as an approach. The imaginary structure between an aesthetic and history—MBE and Puritan society—is discovered. The Mannons in MBE and Puritans in New England have similar attitudes. Both are cruel because they desire to be in power and control economic fields. The efforts to realize the dreams are challenged by other communities and it marks the beginning of puritanical decline in New England and the death of central character in MBE. The tragic visions of the Mannons and puritans guide them to death and fall.

Abstract

The speculation on the fact that Quranic language consists of 'ajam or non-Arab languages as well as dialects (lahjah, qira’āt) has been an issue on the matter of Quranic language. Yet, the Koran confirms itself that it was revealed as “lisānin arabiyyin mubīnin”. This paper aims at describing the terminology. It can be concluded that “Lisān Araby” is a mixture of Arabic eastern and western dialects. The nonArabic languages (‘ajam) have adapted the Arabic pattern and structure thus they has fused with Arabic, known as lahjah or Quraish dialects.

Abstract

Language is a unique trait, which differentiates human being from other creatures. Language ability is a human nature whereas other creatures share their communication system. A study on chimpanzee proves that language only works on human. The study depicts that language is a one of the most primary characteristics of human nature. Chomsky calls it as language acquisition tool.  Philosophical and scientific speculation on the function of language in man was frequent throughout history, dating back to the age of Plato and Aristotle. Yet those speculations have been approached more often by scientists than philosophers. Many theories propose that the gains to be had from language and/or reason were probably mainly in the area of increasingly sophisticated social structures.

Abstract

L’Étranger’s influence on literature, especially on Existentialism, has attracted literary writers and critics. In order to find a text’s meaning and to give a more comprehensive attention to meaning dimension and text plurality, Roland Barthes classified signifiers in narrative discourse into a series of concise and coherent fragments called lexias. And finally, individuality and absurdity constitute the main spirits in Existentialism. L’Étranger expresses aloud these two things just as how Albert Camus shouts out loud his ideology – Existentialism, in each of his works.

Abstract

This paper, firstly, aims to find out what language situation happens in Palangkaraya. The second aim is to find out the urgency of language maintenance and the factors affecting people in using their language. The language, mainly, functions as an instrument to communicate. A living language is one that has been being used and maintained by its speakers. Native language or mother tongue is one that is spoken traditionally by a community in a certain region: Javanese language for the Javanese, Sundanese language for the Sundanese, and Ngaju for Dayaks. Language maintenance is an attempt done by the community to maintain its native language. In other words, it denotes the continuing use of a language in the face of competition from a regionally and socially more powerful language. When the maintenance comes to a crash, the language dies slowly. Meanwhile, if it can compete with the other languages, it will survive.

Abstract

The study aims to describe the variation of textual meaning breadth (VTMB) on Five on the Treasure Island and Lima Sekawan di Pulau Harta, to describe the meaning of VTMB in translational context, and to interpret the contextual factors that cause VTMB. This is descriptive-qualitative research. The data sources are two novels. This research focuses on the clauses unit. The instrument is the researcher herself by applying the concept of Translational Semiotic Communications (TSC) and the Halliday’s concept of textual meaning. The validity testing is done through triangulation. The results of this research indicate that the dominant variation of T1 and T2 is very low (T1=T2). It is supported by the highest figure of the zero variation which is 552 or 63, 52%, the most prominent mean of two texts which is on T1. It can be seen from score 193 or 22, 21%. There are kinds of themes that motivate the TMB. They are interpersonal theme, topical theme, and textual theme. Contextual factor, that motivates the textual meaning breadth of the two texts, are situational context and cultural context. In short, situational context consist of field, tenor and mode. Cultural context can be seen from the cultural terms in T1 used in T2. The title in T2 is the same as T1. This indicates that T2 intertextualizes with T1.
