Abstract

This study aims at describing the discourse of Friday sermons in the city of Surakarta. This study is a sociolinguistic study with qualitative research method. The language based code shows Indonesian language is used dominantly because the object of study is in Surakarta. Arabic is widely used because the Friday sermons are one kind of worships in Islam. Javanese language is used because of the speech location and cultural backgrounds. English only slightly appears and is influenced by the speakers’ background. The code based on the variations can be divided into the standard and non standard languages. Intra-sentential code switchings take the forms of words, reduplication, word repetitions, and phrases. This is due to attitudinal and linguistic factors. Inter-sentential code switchings are permanent and temporary. The determining factors are speakers, interlocutors, topics or subject matters, special speech functions/ends, and changes in circumstances. The functions of code switching in the Friday sermons are to express gratitude, purify God, glorify God, honor someone, express amazement, prohibit, sound prestigious, express permission, beg for forgiveness, beautify utterances, change the subject, pray for someone, declare an appointment, mention terms, express doubts, and regret something.

Abstract

Kasidah Burdah is the work of al-Bu>s}i>ry, an Arab Egyptian writer, which was created in the 13th century AD. It contains poems of praise to the Prophet. Its birth has made poems of praise to the Prophet grow rapidly in the Arab-Islamic world of literature. This Arabic literary work has a major impact on the development of Sufi literature. This research on Kasidah Burdah uses negative aesthetic theory developed by Hans Robert Jauss. This theory considers that a literary work cannot be separated from the history of its creation and speech. This theory also states that a literary work can only be said to achieve beauty when it is negated. It means that it is able to get out of the initial reality of its reference. The material object of this study is the Arabic text of al-Bus}īry’s Kasidah Burdah, and its translation in Indonesian. The formal object is the polemic of the interpretation of some verses in Kasidah Burdah concerning the position of the Prophet as a creature, love, maulid of the Prophet, intercession, and tawassul. The method used in this study is defamiliarization method. This method works based on the assumption that readers must change their way of reading a literary work. They cannot read similarly to what the previous readers did. Readers should not be fixated on the previous readings, but they have to produce new meanings which may not be the same as the primary ones.

Abstract

One Indonesian novel which shows a new feature is Asmaraloka, written by Danarto. The aim of this article is to show the novel’s dominant characteristics on which the new feature is grounded. Based on the concept of foregrounded strategy of repertoire by Iser, I conclude that Asmaraloka presents some dominant characteristics of the ontological theme or the mode theme of the existence of the world. The modes of the existence of the world can be observed in the novel in that there are (1) boundary vagueness between the world of man and angel, (2) boundary vagueness between the world of man and the world of animal, (3) boundary vagueness between the world of man and the world of plant, (4) boundary vagueness between the world of man and the world of world objects, (5) boundary vagueness between the world of man and the world of animal, plant, and world object, (6) boundary transgression between the world of man and the world of Satan, (7) boundary vagueness between the world of man and the world of fairy tale, (8) emergence of the afterlife, (9) inserted zone, (10) the fight between the world of angel and the world of Satan, and (11) the dialogue between the angel with parts of human body. By revealing the diversity of the mode of the world, Asmaraloka presents plurality of the world.

Abstract

This paper aims at describing and analyzing the mostimportant principles in nahwu, that are ‘āmil and ‘illah or ta’līl, not from how they work but from how they function, which is from the theological perspective. The main reason for this is because generally the linguists, who are involved intensively in the study of nahwu, belong to various theological mainstreams, for example Mu’tazilah and Asy’ariyah. By elaborating the critical method of theology, it is expected that the case of ‘āmil and ‘illah or ta’līl are more comprehensible.

Abstract

This paper aims at presenting Sasak language structure in relation to the efforts of standardization toward Sasak language dialect. This presentation stems at the universal principles of linguistic structure which are clear, succinct, and simple to be managed as what have been stated by Poedjosoedarmo. Based on those principles, this study shows that among the four dialects in Sasak language, a-dialect in fact owns an opportunity to be treated as a reference to formulate a standardized dialect linguistic system.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the meanings of idioms with weaponry elements in Arabic. The object of study is focused on the Arabic weaponry idiomatic expression. The theory of Semantic field is used to dissect the idiomatic elements. This is useful for finding relationships of meanings, which are formed by the use of elements of the weaponry idioms. The results shows that the weaponry idiomatic elements of guns have meanings mostly out of the war context. The Arabic weaponry idiomatic expression can show some positive and negative attributes, human activities and human relationships with others or with nature.

Hollywood films as one of America’s prominent industries that influence world’s popular culture can be seen as a cultural discourse. Movie as a popular literature conveys it message in its own unique ways. Myth is one of its messages. This study tries to reconstruct the myth of popular American superhero through an interesting new movie: The Simpsons.  How the new type of hero is manifested is analyzed in this study to find out the continuities or changes in American’s collective dreams so that the new American perspective over heroic mythologies can be understood. Basically this study analyzes as well the possibilities of the meanings conveyed by the media. Textual analysis is conducted to understand not only the meanings of the myth of the superhero perceived by the audience but also the American characters inside the myth. The Simpsons seems to offer a new type of hero’s myth, which is very distinct from the previous type of popular superheroes as in Batman, Superman, or Spiderman.

Abstract

This article aims to  analyze the forms of phonetic interference of Arabic language in the Indonesian language speech spoken by an Arabic native speaker. The source of the data and the object of analysis in this article are the recordings of religious lectures of a preacher from Madinah, Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Ali Jabir, which have been delivered in Indonesian language and widely circulated on YouTube site. The lecture recordings are positioned as Indonesian speech events delivered by an Arabic native speaker. The analytical frameworks used in this paper are the theory of the first language interference over the second language, the theory of contrastive analysis, and the theory of error analysis. The interference theory is applied to understand the flow and the form of interference between Arabic and Indonesian language. The contrastive analysis is applied to identify the phonemic differences between Arabic and the Language of Indonesia and to predict the interferences they cause. Meanwhile, the error analysis is applied to identify the forms of phonetic interference of Arabic over the Indonesian language and to explain their causes and motives. This research finds that there are forms of interference of Arabic sounds in Indonesian speeches spoken by an Arabic native speaker which can generally be patterned in two forms, namely, changes in the pronunciation of unknown Indonesian sounds in Arabic, and changes in the pronunciation of the sounds of the Indonesian words derived from the Arabic language. Both of these two patterns are marked by the change of point and manner of articulation of some Indonesian sounds.

Abstract

This paper deals with the so called siri’ and pacce which are the most important values in Buginese-Makassarese culture. The paper attempts to observe these two values as reflected in the episode of Sompe’na Sawerigading Lao ri Tanah Cina (Sawerigading’s Journey to Tanah Cina) which is one of the episodes of Lagaligo, the longest world literary work recognized by Unesco (United Nations, Educational, Social, and Cultural Organization) as a Memory of the World (MOW) in 2011. Siri’ and pacce, which are the core values of Buginese-Makassarese culture, function as a source of moral reference that strongly influences the way of thinking and behavior of Buginese-Makassarese people. The paper reveals that several characters in the story of Sompe’na Sawerigading Lao ri Tana Cina try to do their best to observe the two values in facing conflicts and challenges of life, but some of them fail. This is due to the fact that the implementation of siri’ and pacce may vary in accordance with one’s status, emotional and intellectual maturity as well as motivation. It is recommended that in order to reduce the destructive impacts of globalization and to minimize the deterioration of national identity and character there should be a holistic strategic policy and efforts taken both by the state and private institutions to seriously and continuously facilitate the transformation of noble values.

Abstract

This paper describes a new discipline in applied linguistics studies, computational linguistics. It’s a new model of applied linguistics which is influenced by computer technology. Computational linguistics is a discipline straddling applied linguistics and computer science that is concerned with the computer processing of natural languages on all levels of linguistic description. Traditionally, computational linguistics was usually performed by computer scientists who had specialized in the application of computers to the processing of a natural language. Computational linguists often work as members of interdisciplinary teams, including linguists (specifically trained in linguistics), language experts (persons with some level of ability in the languages relevant to a given project), and computer scientists. The several areas of computational linguistics study encompasses such practical applications as speech recognition systems, speech synthesis, automated voice response systems, web search engines, text editors, grammar checking, text to speech, corpus linguistics, machine translation, text data mining, and others. This paper presents the definition of computational linguistics, relation between language and computer, and area of computational linguistics studies.
