Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the types of students’ disruptive behavior, the types of commands used by the English teacher, and analyzing the effective commands used by the English teacher to overcome students’ disruptive behavior. The method used in this study was descriptive method in which the data were described under the reality to answer the purpose of this research in finding section and draw the conclusion. The findings of this study revealed that students’ disruptive behaviors that appeared during the learning process could be categorized as The Immature and Well to Do. In handling both types of students' disruptive behavior, the teacher used several commands; those were Interrogation Commands, Regular Commands, Question Commands, Don’t Commands, Indirect Command, and Other Commands. Several commands that were effective were Interrogation Command, Question Command, Indirect Command, and Other Commands.

Abstract

The current research objective was to analyse the ninth grade students’ textbook in the Junior High School publishes by the Indonesia Ministry of National Education based on the 2013 Curriculum. The research problems were focused on the speech acts’ social functions, linguistic features, and language elements. The research was designed in a qualitative approach. Data were analysed descriptively by classifying the speech acts’ social functions, linguistic features, and language elements. The research findings were, firstly, the speech acts’ social functions were stating, describing, explaining, ordering, asking, advising, praying, requesting, complimenting, thanking, boasting, congratulating, apologizing, welcoming, condoling, refusing, offering, guaranteeing, and promising acts. Secondly, the speech acts’ linguistic features designed were imperative, interrogative, and declarative sentences. Thirdly, the speech acts’ language elements used were simple present tense, present continuous tense, present perfect tense, simple past tense, past continuous tense, past perfect tense, and simple future tense.

Abstract

This study aimed to 1) investigate students’ perception on the implementation of the full day school in SMAN 1 Singaraja and SMAN 4 Singaraja 2) investigate teachers’ perception on the implementation of the full day school in SMAN 1 Singaraja and SMAN 4 Singaraja 3) investigate strength and weakness on the implementation of the full day school in SMAN 1 Singaraja and SMAN 4 Singaraja. The design used in this study was descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study were 11th-grade students and teachers from SMAN 1 Singaraja and SMAN 4 Singaraja. The result showed that 1) the students’ perception on the implementation of Full Day School in SMAN 4 Singaraja and SMAN 1 Singaraja are categorized as positive. 2) the teachers’ perception on the implementation of Full Day School in SMAN 4 Singaraja and SMAN 1 Singaraja are categorized as positive. 3) the strengths of the full-day school were developing teacher’s creativity in terms of teaching and developing students’ creativity in terms of affective, cognitive and psychomotor 4) The weakness the students could be bored because of additional hours of learning

Abstract

The objective of this study was to describe and relate the students’ reading interest, reading self-efficacy to the students reading competency in the Junior High School in Singaraja. This study applied quantitative research. There were 94 students as samples by using cluster quota sampling. The data were collected through a reading interest scale, a reading self-efficacy scale, and an objective reading competency test. The obtained data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially. The descriptive analysis consisted of central tendency measures and dispersion. While inferential analysis, the data were analyzed using pair-wise correlation and multiple correlation technique. The findings show that: 1) the students’ reading interest, reading self-efficacy, and reading competency on high-order-items proven to be at the moderate levels; 2) the relations pair-wisely between the students’ reading interest and reading self-efficacy, students’ reading interest and reading competency, the students’ reading self-efficacy and reading competency on high-order-items are positively and significantly correlated; and 3) the simultaneous relationships of the reading interest and reading self-efficacy to the students’ reading competency is proven to be significant. In order to develop high students’ reading interest, reading self-efficacy, and reading competency, the school and EFL teachers should provide literacy programs in reading. Previous researches show that literacy-rich environments tend to be effective ways to support the development of literacy in reading by sharing book readings. The EFL students should be trained millennial reading strategy, emphasizing the four skill dimensions, namely critical thinking skill in reading, creative effort in reading processes, collaborative endeavors in working on high-order-items, communicative skills in working out the reading indicators.

Abstract

This study aimed at describing the teachers' perception about the advantages, disadvantages, difficulties, strategy, and the types of reinforcement used on giving reinforcement to the students with special needs at SLB Negeri 1 Singaraja. The subjects of this research were 4 English teachers at SLB Negeri 1 Singaraja. The data were collected through questionnaire and interview. The result of this research showed that: (1) English teachers at SLB N 1 Singaraja have a very positive perception about the advantages of reinforcement, (2) English teachers at SLB Negeri 1 Singaraja have a positive perception about the difficulties on giving reinforcement to the students with special needs (3) English teachers at SLB Negeri 1 Singaraja have a very positive perception about the types of reinforcement used by English teachers (4). English teachers at SLB Negeri 1 Singaraja have a positive perception about the strategy in giving reinforcement to the students with special needs.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the teachers’ perception in assessing the implementation of the 21st-century skills, in Private Elementary schools in Badung Regency. This study used mixed method research design. There were two schools as the representatives of Private Elementary schools in Badung Regency. This study analyzed the teachers’ readiness in assessing the students’ 21st-century skills. Four teachers were selected using a convenient sampling method. The instruments used in this study comprised questionnaires, anecdotal records, and interview guides. It was found that English teachers in both schools have positive responses toward inserting 21st-century skills in their assessment. This is indicated by the mean score of the respondents’ responses which means that the teachers perceived themselves as being ready in inserting the skills into their assessment. The score falls into the category of high level of readiness as they feel that they had inserted most of the skills in the assessment instruments used to assess their students’ English language learning.

Abstract

The teachers in this era have an essential role in implementing 21st-century skills to the students. The teachers need to be ready and understand the skills 21st century. Thus, this study intends to investigate the primary school teachers' readiness in implementing 21st-century skills, specifically in teaching English. The readiness of teachers can assess from their lesson plan, teaching and learning process and assessment. The sequential embedded mixed-method used as the method of this study. In collecting the data, questionnaires and observation were used to obtain the data and supported by interviews. The data showed that the result of the questionnaires related to the teachers' readiness in implementing the 21st-century skills was high. However, the observation result showed low insertion of the skills of the 21st century conducted by the teachers. Those indicate the implementation of 21st-century skills were not inserted fully by the teachers. Moreover, the teachers have to understand the 21st-century skills as essential skills to survive in the 21st-century era,

Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the types and meaning of taboo languages which were considered as racial discrimination on the film entitled BlacKkKlansman. This study used textual analysis to analyze the subject as a text where it could be understood and got the meaning. The source of data of this study was film entitled BlacKkKlansman. Batistella stated that there were four types of taboo language namely; epithet, profanity, vulgarity and obscenity. To get the meaning the taboo language the data was analyzed using denotation and connotation by Barthes. Denotation used to get the literal meaning and connotation for secondary meaning. This study found 4 types of the taboo language with 52 total data. The data were consisted of 20 epithet data, 11 profanity data, 10 vulgarity data and 11 obscenity data. In conclusion, the meaning of the taboo language was a form of racial discrimination towards certain group of race.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the implementation of 21st-century skills in teaching English at primary schools, such as in Public and Private Schools. This study used mixed method research design, especially the exploratory mixed methods designs. This study was taken place in primary schools in Karangasem Regency. There were 3 schools as the representative of Public Primary schools in Karangasem Regency, such as SDN 1 Kubu, SDN 4 Dukuh and SDN 4 Tulamben. Besides, the representative of Private Primary school was SD Insan Mandiri. Eight teachers were selected using a convenient sampling method. The instruments used in this study were questionnaires, observation, and interview guides. It was found the English teachers in the primary schools in Karangasem Regency were not ready in implementing 21st-century skills in the schools since there were several skills have not been implemented in the lesson plan and assessment. Meanwhile, all skills have been implemented in the teaching and learning process. It can be concluded that 21st-century skills in the primary schools were not implemented well.

Abstract

This research aimed at how was the school literacy program implemented in SMP Laboratorium Undiksha Singaraja. Mixed-method was used because the data of this research were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. There were six findings showed that the financial resources were getting from BOS fund and book donation. The time resources that students read books around 15 minutes before whilst-activity in the classroom while this school has special schedule in outside classroom that was called happy Friday. The facility resources were library, laboratory rooms, reading corner, and multimedia area in good condition. The processes of implementation were conducted in three stages; introduction stage, implementation stage, and establishment stage. The output measurements were through teachers’ evaluation, checking students’ project, checking students’ performance, students and teachers achievement, checking library visit, and students’ achievement in national exam. Furthermore, the sixth finding showed the impacts of reading motivation and reading habit were in moderate category.
