Abstract

This paper examines whether the supply chain integration, just-in-time (JIT) purchasing and JIT manufacturing could impact the logistics performance of suppliers in the automobile industry in Malaysia. An empirical study was conducted in the Malaysia Automobile Industry and the theoretical model was tested using regression analysis. Data were collected using mail questionnaires which were distributed to suppliers of Malaysian automotive manufacturers. The survey was administered to the management level identified from a list of executive personnel and to those who were actually in charge of logistics operations. Among one hundred respondents, 91 were considered as valid from those who practice supply chain integration for their business operations. The findings reveal supply chain integration, JIT purchasing and JIT manufacturing had direct and significant benefits to logistics performance. The scope of this study was by design limited to participant responded within a particular time frame and was only given a single opportunity to respond. The proposed framework provides significant contribution to the performance of logistics operations automotive manufacturing industry and furthermore enables logistics practitioners to gain better understanding of these factors effecting logistics performance. In addition, till to date, no studies has been conducted on the effect of supply chain integration and just-in-time towards logistics performance mainly in the automotive industry particularly in developing county, Malaysia.

Abstract

The retail chain store business is an infant stage of growth and development in Bangladesh and so are the supply chain management practices in this sector. The main objective of this study is to identify the key drivers of retail supply chain efficiency. Moreover this study aims at examining the moderating effect of lean supply chain strategy on the link between supply chain drivers and performance. For the purpose of the study, data were collected with a structured questionnaire from 115 participants consisting of outlet and supply chain managers of some selected retail chain stores in Bangladesh. Collected data were analyzed using partial least squares (PLS) structural equation modeling with the support of the software Smart PLS 2.0 M3. Findings revealed that out of five supply chain drivers, four namely inventory management, use of IT, transportation management and coordination were the most significant determinants of retail supply chain efficiency while suppliers role was found to be negatively correlated. Moderating effect of lean strategy was also noticed on the link between two drivers namely transportation management and coordination with retail supply chain efficiency.

Abstract

The U.S. is witnessing an unprecedented growth in renewables, particularly wind and solar energy, thanks to a number of enablers including government subsidies, government mandates to utilities, impressive technological growth, price collapse in silicon production costs, and the geo-political uncertainty around fossil fuel production. While wind energy has more favorable market conditions due to its more relatively mature state and inherent advantages such as all-day production, the solar energy production is becoming more competitive primarily due to the rapidly declining supply chain costs and scale economy in solar panel production. In this paper, our focus is on the underlying factors for the supply chain cost decrease, which has led to a more attractive profitability potential in the industry, despite the price pressure on the revenue. However, we find no evidence that the supply chain cost gains can continue to dramatically lower the cost of production much further. This means that manufacturers need to find new ways to improve the manufacturing efficiencies subject to the theoretical limits on energy conversion efficiencies or move up the technology maturity curve to the next generation solar technology. If they stay too long close to such theoretical conversion efficiency this will be an evening twilight, and yet if they can switch at the right time to ride the technology curve, it will be a morning twilight. We begin with the overall market growth drivers for solar panels in Section 1 and their impact on the solar panels manufacturers. In section 2, we devote our attention to the efficiency drivers for various solar technologies. These include both the conventional ones in place today as well as disruptive technologies on the horizon and potential drivers that would make them more affordable. We conclude this paper in Section 3 with areas to explore as next steps.

Abstract

The economies of the Small Island Developing States of the Caribbean have traditionally been based on low value adding activities within global value streams. This has occured even when there was knowledge and opportunity for industrial upgrading to occur. This study looks at the Fashion Industry of Trinidad and Tobago and investgates whether there exists opportunity for owning or occupying lead positions in global fashion industry value streams.

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this biomechanical study is to evaluate the surface topography (ST), surface roughness (SR), and hardness of available brackets/archwires including developed aesthetic polymer matrix composites (PMC) archwire and bracket (braided). Those are important determinants for the effectiveness of archwire-guided tooth movement. Materials and Methods: The present study characterizes and compares stainless steel (SS) developed PMC archwires and SS, ceramics, composite developed PMC brackets for ST, SR and hardness with respect to (w.r.t.) frictional force. Archwires are slid against the slots (contact flats) of brackets in tensile tester. Statistical analysis is performed with confidence level (p 0.05) for frictional force SR and hardness of SS archwires are analyzed as well. Detailed wear studied were performed by SEM. Results: The roughness average (Ra) and correlation coefficient (r) are expressed as the mean. Significant positive correlations (p 0.05) are observed. Identical hardness (580-600 kg/mm2) of SS archwires for different shapes are recorded except composite archwire. SEM results show that the ST of brackets and archwires varies among as-received and after sliding. Conclusions: Transcend (PCA) is the roughest brackets while the SS (SRO-AW) and aesthetic PMC archwires are the roughest archwires. Abstract

Growth in economy together with globalization makes global companies and investment holdings more active in international markets. This activity involves a certain level of risk as payback period of investments are very critical and correct decision on selection of companies to be invested determines success of top management of investors and also creditors. In this article an investment groups local acquisition opportunities are evaluated by ELECTRE (Elimination et choix traduisant la realite) method. In this case there are four alternatives that are accepting same price and other contractual requirements. This paper lists six important criteria that have influence on local acquisition alternatives selection in Turkey according to references: Financial performance, accreditations and authorizations, Administrative and accounting, technical infrastructure, staff expertise and experience, customer portfolio. AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process) have been used to evaluate the criteria and then ELECTRE method is used for ranking the alternatives.

Abstract

This paper attempts to evaluate performance (i.e. efficiency) of Asias container ports. Measurement of the ports performance is critical to increase the competitiveness of maritime transport, ultimately leading to one nations competitive advantages over other countries. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), which is a non-parametric method widely used for assessing efficiency of units which have similar characteristics, was selected to analyse the data. Due to the limitations of the DEA method producing diverse results according to different models, and to the complexities of choosing a specific model among several DEA models, Shannons Entropy was also employed. By including Shannons Entropy, the efficiency results calculated from each model were integrated in order to rank the ports. The results in this study will provide port managers with valuable information in order to understand the current status of Asias container ports in terms of their efficiency.

Abstract

The responsibility of todays's reputable company are not only financial, but also corporate social responsibility(CSR). With regards to the environmental aspect, the public expects green logistics solutions. This paper focuses on how a third party logistics provider(3PL) might provide green logisticsservices through actions that foster sustainability. The methodology used is an in-depth interviewing approach, which described green logistics through the key drivers using depth interviews. An existing conceptual model is used to support our concepts and ideas. Finally, we discuss out the key factors from respondent regarding how to maintain sustainability through action, from 3PL's perspective. We also discuss the benefits and challenges to green logistics in future.

Abstract

This paper provides a deep insight into the corporate social responsiblity (CSR) image scenariao of the Bangladesh suppliers as well as identifies the challanges for building a positive supply chain (SC) CSR image for the suppliers of Bangladesh clothing industry. The contribution of this paper is that it improves knowledge of SC CSR image from the suppliers' as well as buyers' perspective. The paper also make suggestions regarding improvment of suppliers' CSR image that can influence the improvement of SC CSR image

Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to examine the patterns and to assess the determinants of India's Intra-Industry Trade (IIT) in manufacturing supply chain withsix major ASEAN economies from the inception of formal economic arrangements in 1993 to the year 2013. The study assesses IIT in manufacturing supply chain for six diverse country pairs. The findings have significant implications for the current inadequate 'top-down' approach and the missing complementary 'bottom-up' approach to deepen ASEAN-India regional economic integration. ASEAN-India trade in manufacturing supply chain increased considerably over the past two decades but studies examining the nature and the patterns are few. The paper provides a novel examination of the hitherto uninvestigated India's IIT in manufacturing supply chain with individual ASEAN countries over two decades. The anlaysis juxtaposes six country pairs within a frame, enabling an emphasis on the contrasts across six diverse ASEAN countries in the manufacturing supply chain.
