Abstract

It is a big challenge for Malaysian healthcare authorities in providing services to rural communities. To meet up with the challenges, a concept called business intelligence (BI) is employed for their informed decision-making that utilizes their enormous data. However, only a few of BI initiatives have their success stories as many are still struggling to justify the investments. Among the most reason of the failures were that BI requirements were overlooked, leading to poor BI deployments. Taking rural healthcare in Malaysia as a case study, the paper attempts to model BI requirements using goal-oriented approach. Rural healthcare BI requirements were modelled two-folds: (1) decision making requirements, cantered on stakeholders; and (2) BI data requirements, focused on organizational and decisional aspects. The model can guide BI developers on the process and data needed in rural healthcare strategic decision-making. Theoretically it provides new insights and facilitates the improvement of new healthcare knowledge.

Abstract

Safety at work is one of the key issues in many organizations. This is because accidents and injuries in the workplace can cost the organization financially and non-financially. Although workplace safety has been widely investigated, less attention is given to the small and medium enterprises. Such neglect is unfortunate because many accidents and injuries around the world, including Malaysia, happen in this organizational milieu. A survey of 74 employees of SMEs in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia was carried out. Self-reported measures were used to obtain data on workplace safety dimensions and safety behavior. The Partial Least Square (PLS) structural model analysis was used to ascertain the proposed relationships. The present study found that only three dimensions of safety management practices (management commitment, safety training, and safety rules and procedures) were significantly related to safety behavior. Implications for managers and practitioners are discussed.

Abstract

The public nowadays has become more aware on the environmental issue. This is because they have understood the negative impact of pollution and wasting of natural resources to human being and also the Mother Nature. The conventional housing area that has been built to fulfil the basic needs of housing to the community in Malaysia was seen as a negative type of development to environment. This is because the abundance use of energy and thus high amount of carbon dioxide release to the atmosphere. In order to handle this problem, the greenhouse resident concept has been introduced. This concept can reduce utilization of energy, water, and natural resources but still can give good quality of air and importantly the comfort of the occupant. But, how much do the public especially house buyer knows and understands about the concept of greenhouse resident because it is relatively new trend in the home development in Malaysia. This research is done to evaluate the level of knowledge among the house buyers in the concept, components, and the challenges in developing green house residence in Malaysia.

Abstract

The Government of Malaysia has taken a proactive action by implementing the strategic ICT-driven or ICT-enabled transformation programmes and ICT plays a critical role in ensuring their efficient and effective implementation. However regardless the efforts, the implementation of BIM in Malaysia mostly on the private sector driven and it is still between BIM level 0 and BIM level 1. As many of countries across the globe have shown great interest and their public sector plays an important role in leading the market towards BIM adoption, the Government of Malaysia and its agencies by capitalising the existing hard and soft-infrastructures in Malaysia should play significant roles to help in stimulate BIM technology in Malaysia to be comparable with other developed countries. This paper through literature review aims to establish a clear understanding about the global BIM implementation in the public sector, to determine the public sector readiness to adopt BIM in Malaysia and to investigate the potential of BIM implementation within the public sector. In addition, suggestions on the focus of the other research papers on BIM implementation within the public sector will be included.

Abstract

Delays are one of the biggest problems faced by the construction industry. The delays in construction projects have significant financial and social impact to parties involved in the projects. The main objective of this study is to explore the causes of delay in the Vale Malaysia Minerals Project (VMMP) in Lumut, Perak. This study was conducted by using a qualitative approach. A series of  face to face interviews were conducted with an expert from construction organization and  VMMP staff.  Responses were analysed qualitatively using content analysis  and a comprehensive interpretation was developed. The results revealed that several factors that contribute to the delay in VMMP completion, i.e. communication, delayed in material delivery, and poor management on site, etc. Time and cost overrun were the common effects of delays in construction project. The findings of this study will help the project manager or the client to take necessary measures and to use of supply chain management  to avoid delays of project completion in a construction project.

Abstract

Pattani is a province with a multi-ethnic population which the majority is Muslim. As such, employers in this region need a good understanding of how employees behave and work in such an environment of employees dissimilarity in order to ensure the fulfilment of employees work motivation. This study aims to determine alternative factors which impact work motivation to support and develop a conceptual framework of work motivation among Muslim public health employees in Pattani Province. The conceptual model for this study posits that work motivation is dependent on the two independent variables, namely; a) Islamic Workplace Accommodation; b) Nature of Work. A questionnaire survey of 242 Muslim employees from Public Health Center in Pattani province showed that that the relationship between the Islamic Workplace Accommodation and Nature of Work are positive toward Work Motivation.

Abstract

Indoor environment much more important for people health and comfort than the outdoor environment for most people who spend most of their living times in industrialized countries lives in an artificial indoor environment. Along these lines, this research is to upgrade indoor environmental quality conditions for comfort and work performance of occupants in Kompleks Eureka, USM while conserving energy of the building. Detailed field investigations of the indoor environment in large office buildings in many parts of the world have documented that the indoor environmental quality is typically rather mediocre, with many people dissatisfied and many suffering from sick-building syndrome symptoms. Recent studies have shown an important impact of the indoor thermal environment on occupants work performance. Also studies on occupants medical leave show a very high loss of work time and working performance, which have important economical consequences for companies. The paper will mainly dealing with the indoor environmental qualities, such as thermal comfort level, air quality, lighting, and acoustic quality. The studies before showing that comfortable room temperatures, increased air ventilation above normal recommendation, comfortable acoustic surrounding will increases the work performance of occupants in Kompleks Eureka, USM.

Abstract

The construction industry is considered to be the largest contributor to the nations economy. However, there are many challenges that had to be overcome to ensure construction projects are successful in achieving the minimum cost to utilize the necessary resources in the success of the project. Some of the construction projects failed to be completed on schedule due to the negligence of certain parties in ensuring that the project value is at the maximum level. Responding to the challenge, this research hopes to counter this problem and help towards the betterment of the construction industry using a value management approach. Therefore, this paper discusses the successful factors in implementing value management through the interview and documentation data gathering process. As a result, it shows that local practitioners of value analysis in construction projects should consider these important factors as a catalyst for increasing the value of projects.

Abstract

Value Management (VM) is a multi-disciplinary process, consist of team oriented, structured, analytical process and systematic analysis of function, to seeks best value in the project process and meet the clients needs. While the important of Energy Efficiency (EE) in buildings is a must nowadays because of energy consumption rising very high and this situation occurs not only in developed countries but also in developing countries such as Malaysia. In fact, there is demand towards building with energy efficiency features at this time, however most of the current buildings types are still being constructed with conventional designs thus contribute to inefficient of energy consumption during the operation stage of the building. Based on the relevant literatures, VM has provides an efficient and effective delivery system to fulfil the objectives and clients requirements. Therefore, this paper presents the concept and the application of VM approach and potential to improve energy efficiency within pre-construction process and contribute to better optimize the energy consumption in a building by seeking the best value energy efficiency through the design and construction process.
