Abstract

The massive influx of popular culture products among teenagers is often accepted passively without critical filters, resulting in vulnerability to information bias and global cultural hegemony. This community service activity aims to strengthen the critical literacy of students at SMA Mardisiswa Semarang through the critical viewing method. The implementation followed four stages: planning, partner identification, training through dialogic discussions and case studies, and reporting. The participants consisted of 32 twelfth-grade students. Data were collected through participatory observation and analyzed using a descriptive qualitative approach. The results demonstrated a significant transformation in the students' mindset, evolving from passive consumers into critical viewers. Students successfully improved their methodological skills in deconstructing visual messages, identifying agendas behind media content, and mitigating psychological impacts such as the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) phenomenon. The use of popular culture texts as a learning instrument is effective in building students' sovereignty of thought and mental resilience in the era of information disruption.

Abstract

The era of Society 5.0 has intensified the integration of digital technologies while also facilitating the proliferation of misinformation and hoaxes across social media platforms. The limited capacity for fact-checking has rendered communities increasingly susceptible to false narratives. In response, a community service initiative was launched to enhance the digital literacy of youth in Sunter Agung, North Jakarta, through a mentoring program focused on community-based fact-checking. This initiative engaged 25 young participants and utilized a participatory mentoring framework that included digital literacy education, hands-on practice with verification tools, case simulations, and community mentorship. The evaluation methodology comprised pre-tests, post-tests, observations, and practical assessments. Findings indicated a notable improvement in participants' proficiency with digital fact-checking tools, rising from 58% to 83%, alongside significant behavioral shifts towards verifying information prior to sharing it on social media. Additionally, the program developed a model for community-based fact-checking mentorship that holds promise for implementation in other urban settings.

Abstract

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is an important approach for cultivating a sustainability culture among students. This study analyzes the development of ESD-based schools in Adiwiyata Junior High Schools, with a focus on the implementation of activities that support students’ environmental awareness. The research employs a descriptive exploratory qualitative design, using interviews, questionnaires, and observations to collect comprehensive data. The Whole-School Approach Theory guides the analysis to examine how ESD is integrated across school leadership, school culture, curriculum, and participatory practices. The findings indicate that ESD implementation in Adiwiyata Junior High Schools is generally running well, particularly in strengthening environmental care values and everyday environmental practices. Nevertheless, improvements are still needed in curriculum integration and in the systematic development of students’ sustainability-related life skills. In addition, challenges remain in increasing students’ long-term sustainability awareness, which requires stronger collaboration between the school and the community. This study is expected to provide recommendations for further ESD development in Adiwiyata Junior High Schools and in similar school contexts.
