Abstract

Project Based Learning (PBL) in English for Specific Purpose (ESP) has been believed to enable student to have hand on and contextual experiences related to their English Language Learning. In addition to the teaching and learning process, project can also be used as an assessment instrument through PBL. Despite the possible project-based assessment, the existing studies have mainly focused on the PBL as a teaching and learning approach with less attention on assessment. This paper describes the use of project based assessment in two ESP courses in an Islamic college in East Java. The stages of the assessment and students’ responses on the benefit and challenges are presented. Implication for PBL in English language teaching and learning and other possible implementation of project-based assessment are also presented in the paper.

Abstract

The aims of this study is to investigate student’ difficulties in Structure and Written Expression on Paper-Based TOEFL. The subjects of this study were ten students of English Department STKIP Al Hikmah Surabaya. This study used qualitative research method. The researcher used TOEFL test and interview in collecting the data. The study found the most students’ errors were from five item of TOEFL test, they were invert subject and verb. Multi clauses, reduced clause, form of the verb, and adjective and verb. This research also showed that the main factor causing students’ difficulty in TOEFL was lack of grammar.

Abstract

This article focuses on describing the use of Mind Map to increase students’ vocabulary mastery. The objective of this research was to improve students’ vocabulary mastery by applying Mind Map. It was descriptive qualitative research. The method used in this research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) which consists of Planning, Acting, Observing, and Reflecting. This research was managed in two cycles. The participants of this research were first semester students in one of the universities in North Maluku. The instruments used in this research were observation and test. From the data collection, it can be drawn a conclusion that the use of mind map was able to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. After analyzing the data sources, it was found that there was improvement score from the pre-test and post-test. The mean score of pre-test was 54, 91 and the post-test was 83, 43. Thus, it can be concluded that Mind Map is an appropriate method to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

Future tense is one of important part of daily communication, students need to know the future tense well otherwise they get misunderstanding of speakers’ purpose. Some students get confused and have difficulties in defining part of a sentence. So, it is important for them to know the tense well. Moreover, the purpose of this study was to know about the improvement of student’s future tense understanding after they were taught by using role play. This research used a quantitative approach and it was conducted to 15 students in class 2019 semester 1. The data of the research collected using a paper based test of future tense. The result showed that there was significant improvement in students’ future tense understanding after they got role play. It could be proven from the improvement of students’ average score from the pretest and post-test, which was 59 to 82,6, hypothesis test showed that t-table is 2,145 and the t-value is 14,992. In conclusion, role play technique can improve students’ future tense understanding

Abstract

This study is categorized as a classroom action research (CAR). This study proposed mind mapping strategy in the teaching and learning English at the eleventh grade students of SMK Negeri 2 Kediri to solve the students’ incompetency on reading achievement. As the result of the preliminary study indicated that the students’ problem toward their reading competence is the average reading score is lower than the minimum standard of learning (KKM). Beside that, the teachers always present reading activity by asking the students to read text and to answer the exercises without giving a technique how to understand the text easily. Most of the students became passive because of the students' lack of vocabulary. In the text, there are many words that the students do not know those meaning and as such they cannot catch the information of the text.Therefore, the criteria of success was directed to the mentioned problem. The results showed that the instruction through mind mapping strategy in the Cycle I and Cycle II, the students’ reading achievement improved and the teaching and learning process was interesting for the students.

Abstract

The type of research is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. The research subjects were students in XI MIPA 1 at SMAN 1 Purwosari. The stages of the research include preparation, data collection, data analysis, and report making. The aim of this research to describe student’s higher order thinking skill in writing analytical exposition text. The research instrument used were rubric score of HOTS in writing. The research instrument was a rubric score of HOTS in writing. It was appropriate with the government curriculum about K-13. The research instrument is also based on the real problem. It would help students solve the problem. Because in HOTS, they will try to analyzed the problem. Then, they able evaluate or assess the problem. After that, they able to create a solution. The result explained that subject 3 with high academic report in English lesson able to reach excellent level of HOTS and the others had good level of HOTS. According to this research, students from SMAN 1 Purwosari need appropriate strategies and teaching materials to improve their writing skill in higher order thinking skill

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the practices and challenges of online learning or so called Learning From Home (LFH) in English Department during the even semester 2019/2020 academic year. The subject of this study are 8 lecturers of English Department at STKIP Al Hikmah. This study employed descriptive qualitative research design. The instrument used is daily online teaching monitoring and evaluation questionnaire. The result of this study is categorized into five aspects namely 1) online learning applications frequently used by the lecturers are WhatsApp, Google Classroom, Schoology, Quizizz, E-mail, Zoom Cloud Meeting, Email, and Youtube, 2) online learning activities frequently conducted by the lecturers are uploading materials, discussion forum, conducting quizzes, uploading assigment,, and video conferences, 3) scheduled assignment submission rate, 4) students’ participation rate and 5) challenges and alternative solution proposed by the lecturers during the online learning.

Abstract

Stern (1983) defines a language is viewed as foreign language when (1) it is used only to travel abroad, communicate with the native speaker, and reading a foreign literature, and (2) usually learnt at formal educational environment because lacks of support from natural environment. Moreover, the character is really suit to describe the position of English in Indonesia. For the sake of student’s foreign language acquisition, teacher talk has an important position to be a good model of how the language is used and the input in the process of language acquisition. Therefore, the research is meant to answer two questions (1) types of teacher talk in the English as Foreign Language classroom, and (2) Why the teacher uses the certain type of teacher talk. In order to answer the question, observation and semi structured interview have been done to reveal the types of teacher’s utterance in the classroom. The data of the research are analysed using qualitative methods and the result is presented in paragraph. As result, a teacher in MA Bilingual Muslimat NU Sidoarjo uses the directive sentence mostly in the classroom, since she believes that encourage students to speak in English is very necessary for English as foreign language learner. The teacher also produce only 30,12% utterances in the classroom interactions, which she also believes that it is necessary to give students more opportunity to speak in the class in order to enhance their willingness to speak in English

Abstract

Writing becomes one of fundamental skills in learning language. In tis digital era, when everything is possible to be done in online, the students prefer to easily find some references in the websites or other online sources. The students hesitate to produce their own ideas in that they can get anything they want on the internet. This cases take a big part of the quality of the students in mastering writing skill. Thus, the teachers should have many alternative to help the students, more to EFL stuents to improve their writing performance through such an online based-learning. Grammarly is one of possible solution can be taken as the students writing assistant while the teachers giving some exercises. The students will be helpful working on Grammarly in that they will be able to produce any languages they know, then Grammarly will take a place to help them correct their work.

Abstract

Character education is mostly discussed around academic researchers, they are discussing deeply about how the impact of education to build a character which have many effects so it would be reinforcement for students’ character nowadays. Therefore, many researchers try to increase the ability of student potential good character. Several things that being a way to support the education as a place for developing character education in national student which hope that would better before the education have. Scout is considered able to change students’ character from the individuality student to be more active and creative, discipline, independent and so on. This paper is hoping that scout activity is going to be a builder for character education in order that can be proved by researcher and other.
