Abstract

This research is concerned with the compositional pattern of meaning in selected Nigerian military and paramilitary logos, how the logos presented their identity, and the appropriateness of visual and verbal elements. This paper is concerned with the analysis of patterns of meaning in visual and verbal components of selected Nigerian military and paramilitary logos. For visual analysis, ten logos were selected, and the texts (agency's name and motto), which accompanied the images , were grouped via 'below the clause.' Both visual and verbal components of the logos were analysed based on Kress and Van Leeuwen's social semiotics, and Halliday's systemic functional linguistics (henceforth, SFL). Our findings showed that the logo designers made use of animal (eagles, bat, horses, elephant and human eye) and object (flag, anchor, shovel, axe, flower, wheat leaves, passport, colours) participants. Analysis 'below the clause' presented Nominal Group (NG) with highest percentage which showed that the major focus of the communicators (military and paramilitary) is to persuade viewers. The verbal components of the logos were appropriately used to accompany the logos for easy understanding. Also, the selected colours are peculiar to Nigeria environment. Therefore viewers had no difficulty in getting the intended messages.

Abstract

Readability is an indicator that used to describe whether a text more or less available to the reader level. This study attempts to find out the appropriateness of the English reading texts in terms of the readability level for the target students. This study is designed by using descriptive qualitative method. The main data used is student’s handbook. The texts were consists of 7 descriptive texts and 1 narrative text and then those data were collected by using documentary technique. In calculating readability level, the researcher employed the Flesch readability formula. The results show that the average readability level of eight reading texts was at level seven grade student by showing the average of the percentage score was 72, 96%. Then, from the eight reading texts were categorized into four levels, namely: there are 2 texts of Easy level, Fairly Easy as many as 3 texts, Standard for 1 texts, and Fairly Difficult for 2 texts. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that those texts were disagree for the target students. Thus, for teachers, English Teacher particularly, should be wise in choosing a textbook as material for teaching students must be match with their capabilities level.

Abstract

This study aims to discover the transitivity process types in Frozen movie and to discover the dominant types of process used in Frozen movie. This study is conducted by using qualitative descriptive method and using the content analysis approach. The data is classified as documentation since the data were written document which using the transcript of the film. The film was the cartoon movie genre entitled Frozen that was released in 2013. The transcript was downloaded from https://www.raindance.org/scripts/Frozen.pdf. The theory used in this study was the theory proposed by Martin, Matthiessen, and Painter, 1997. In analyzing the data, Gay, Mills, and Airasian, (2012) method was used to analyze the data. As a result of analysis, it was found that the types of transitivity process were available in Frozen movie. Transitivity processes types that were found in this movie were material process, mental process, relational process, verbal process, behavioural process and existential process. Moreover, there are 149 clauses that indicated material process, 148 clauses that indicated mental process, 68 clauses that indicated relational process, 22 clauses that indicated verbal process, 53 clauses that indicated behavioural process, 9 clauses that indicated existential process that was found Frozen movie. Thus, it can be assumed that the dominant types of process found in Frozen movie was material process, the second is mental process, the third is relational process, the fourth is behavioural process, the fifth is verbal process and the last is existential process.

Abstract

A material process may show something that has been done physically between two entities, in the clauses or texts. It shows who (or what) is the actor that does the action, if possible, to the goal (or, range), as the participant in the news. This research explained the words as material processes in clauses and the function of their appearance in the online news based on its features of transitivity as part of Systemic Functional Linguistics through the contexts. A descriptive qualitative method was used to explain the processes. The material processes in the text were analyzed based on types of processes of transitivity in Systemic Functional Linguistics study. There are fifty-one material processes found in the text, consists of thirty-seven processes of doing (composed by the creative and the dispositive processes), and fourteen processes of happening. Material processes that were used in the news text show the material actions done by entities (animate or inanimate objects), written from the point of view of the news writer(s). By this research, it can be seen that material processes are very useful for text writing, such as giving more colors, drawing more interest from the readers, giving different word meaning in different contexts, and giving more meaning to the context itself.

Abstract

US president Donald Trump has accused China of unfair trading practices and intellectual property theft. Consequently, there is a trade war between America and China by means of imposing tariffs on each other’s goods ("A quick," 2020). As the war develops, more and more American and Chinese audiences are trying to investigate the root issue through news reports and other media channels. However, the main problem for audiences is whether or not the news reports from both American and Chinese perspectives deliver the information concerning the negotiation process objectively. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate further into the construction of objectivity and subjectivity in related reports. In total, two reports are selected: one is from the FOX Business Network in the U.S. and the other is from the CGTN (China Global Television Network) in China. Via Michael Halliday’s Transitivity System in Systemic Functional Linguistics, the frequency appearance of each process types is counted and explained. Also, the qualitative approach is applied while scrutinizing each clause word by word. This paper discovers that Trish Regan, an American journalist, preferred to illustrate the circumstance about the trade war as if she was part of the negotiation team while Liu Xin, a Chinese anchor, focused heavily on attacking Regan personally. In addition, this thesis also reminds viewers and journalists to be aware of the subjective language use in reports. Last but not least, it has proved the applicability of the Transitivity System in news reports analysis.

Abstract

A common phenomenon in a multilingual nation, especially a nation where a second language exists among different native languages, is the ‘linguistic interference’ which impedes effective communication among the people that use such a second language. This issue could be attributed to the fact that the second language users do not have all-encompassing knowledge of the rules which guide the use of the language. This research takes a run at finding out the effect of interference of indigenous language on proficiency in English (in both oral and written communications) among Yoruba People in Nigeria. This study focuses on the linguistic interference which usually occurs at the syntactic level of the indigenous language (Yoruba) and the Nigerian ‘lingua franca’ (English). The research adopts a descriptive survey method and error analysis approach for data analysis. The findings of this study show that the second language users of English bring the knowledge of the rules and features of their native languages into existence in the use of English in communication. This results in ungrammatical expressions in their everyday communication.

Abstract

The logical structure of clauses indicates the logical connection between experiential events, thus it brings smoothness and coherence to writings. There are two fundamental systems that need to be considered in the analysis of how clauses are related to each other: taxis and logico-semantics (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2014). The theoretical framework used to analyse the logical relations of the clauses employed in academic IELTS sample essays on which the present study is based is the Systemic Functional Theory developed by Halliday & Matthiessen (2014). By focusing on the logical manifestations of the clause complex, particularly the study of taxis and logico-semantics, this paper sheds light on the logical relations demonstrated in IELTS sample essays. This study was designed using descriptive, analytic and inductive research method. Data were 60 IELTS academic essays taken from published books and official IELTS websites with band scores ranging from 7.0 to 7.5. The findings indicate that the writers employ more hypotaxis than parataxis to establish logical connections between states of affairs, proving that the IELTS writers tend to support their arguments using some unequal status. The analysis of logico-semantic relation also reveals that the dominant relationship is expansion. It is expected that the study will enable IELTS candidates to take into account the salient logical features of high-quality essays to produce more effective pieces of writing.

Abstract

This research entitled Stereotypes and Discrimination in the "Green Book" Movie : Critical Discourse Analysis aims to analyze the stereotypes and discrimination that occur in the main character, Don Shirley. The theory used in this research is critical discourse analysis theory by Van Dijk. In this research, researchers found many expressions or utterances and actions that refer to stereotypes and discriminatory behavior committed by white people against black people in America. This study uses qualitative methods because qualitative is a procedure that produces descriptive data in the form of written and spoken words. The results showed that this case contained three types of discrimination and stereotypes. First, Individual Discrimination is presented in the unfair treatment by white people against the main black figure, Don Shirley. Second, Institutional Discrimination occurs in the police institution where the police imprison Don Shirley who has not committed a crime at all, but only because he is black. Third, Structural Discrimination occurs in the form of policies carried out by majority races which have a negative impact on racial minorities.

Abstract

Abstract: Isolating intensifiers are regarded as markers of the lexical-grammatical class denoting graduation. This category of language performs up-scaling or down-scaling of isolated and individual item solely so as to convey the level of intensity (Martin & White, 2005). The paper aims at exploring how isolating intensifiers upgrade and downgrade verbal processes found in English literary discourse. The study was conducted using qualitative method and basing on 120 samples extracted from the English literary works namely Wuthering Heights by Bronté, The Man of Property by Galsworthy, The moon and Sixpence by Maugham and Vanity Fair by Thackeray. The findings show that the isolating intensifiers can modify a range of various processes such as Material, Mental, Behaviour and Rational processes so as to raise or lower the degree of intensity for the processes. The study also makes some certain contributions to English learning, teaching as well as language study.

Abstract

This research’s objectives were to examine the obligatory and optional linguistic elements, the generic structure, and the pragmatic imports of the linguistic elements identified in Reverend EMF Oshoffa's sermons. Reverend Emmanuel Mobiyina Friday Oshoffa is selected out of many white garment Churches because of the large audience that listen to him as the Supreme Head of Celestial Church of Christ worldwide. In this study, we purposively studied thirty-two (32) excerpts selected from Reverend EMF Oshoffa's sermons through participants and non- participant observations. The findings revealed the GSP catalogue for Reverend EMF Oshoffa as [P]^ [S]^ (DoP)^ [Se]^ {(CfC)^ (WtF)}^ [F]. The elements generated in the catalogue include: prayer P, Song S, Greeting G, Declaration of Purpose DoP, Sermon Se, Call for Confession CfC, Welcome to the Fold WtF, and Finis F. While DoP, CfC and WtF are optional, the remaining ones (P, S, G, Se and F) are obligatory. The findings revealed that most registers used in patterning CCC sermon feature 'angelic registers' whose meanings cannot be traced to any world languages, but their meanings can be inferred from the context of use. Notable registers of the sermon featured El-beraca-bered-Eli, Elmorijah, Elohimjah, and Eli-Bamah-Yabah. The paper concluded that the elements of GSP catalogued here are typical of CCC sermonic discourse. It is therefore suggested that future research could apply this model to other sermonic discourse of other denomination, most especially White Garment Church such as Cherubim and Seraphim to further test its validity.
