Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the critical discourse analysis of the news about the death of Taruna high school students published by news.okezeone.com. In this study, all microstructural, mesostructural and macrostructural aspects were examined which were developed to produce news texts. This study uses an online news entitled "Tewas saat MOS, Siswa SMA Taruna Palembang Dipukuli Pembina Pakai Bambu " published on July 16, 2019 online. This research uses the critical discourse analysis model from Teun A. Van Dijk. The results showed that news.okezone.com practiced diction selection, the use of broad sentences of causation, and the selection of sources in direct quotations to produce news texts. There is motivation in the production of the news text, namely that readers are led to provide a positive image on news.okezone.com as an active and existing media in voicing justice.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to describe the structure of news texts on detiknews.com about Habib Rizieq's return to create groups during COVID-19 pandemic. The method used in this research was a qualitative research method. The data were collected from detik, which was available online. The headline of the news entitled “Wanti-wanti Satgas Corona Saat Kepulangan Habib Rizieq Bikin Kerumunan”, “Detik-Detik Kepulangan Habib Rizieq”, and “Insiden Orang Meninggal Hingga Pingsan di tengah Penyambutan Habib Rizieq” in which those highlighted the returning of Habib Rizieq which then caused crowds of people in the midst of the corona virus pandemic, were analyzed in this researcg. This present research employed three-dimensional structures text in CDA developed by Teun A van Dijk approach which consists of micro structure, macro structure, and super structure. The results showed that micro structure includes thematic with topic elements in the first and second news of Habib Rizieq's return illustrates how the appeals given to the public regarding the returning of Habib Rizieq by officials and parsons. Superstructure refers to how the news is structured with the scheme. Habib Rizieq, who acts as the main actor, cannot be doubtful but the crowds that will occur involve many people. Meanwhile, macro structure consists of semantics with elements of background, detail, and intent, which tells the events and background of the news about Habib Rizieq who returns to Indonesia and causes the crowd of many people during pandemic of COVID-19.

Abstract

Language is something learnt from the earliest stage of human life that continues until adulthood. Therefore, to further learn about how important literature in early stages of human life is, an approach towards children’s literature is needed. This study aims to analyze a work of children’s literature with a Systemic Functional Linguistics approach. Ideational, Textual, and Interpersonal meanings are analyzed from the short story “Jack and the Beanstalk” accessed from https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/short-stories/jack-and-the-beanstalk. The researchers use a descriptive qualitative method. The story is broken down into individual clauses which are then analyzed using SFL in tables as shown below. The result shows that the majority of the text used material process and topical unmarked theme, which indicates that the story is simple but concise. The story itself, although simple, tells a magical fantasy tale, which stimulates children’s imagination to the fullest.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the realization of textual metafunctions and the types of themes that are dominated in speeches about mental health on the TEDxSalem YouTube channel entitled 'Why you should take a break: Prioritizing mental health in schools and brought by Hailey Hardcastle. The method in this research is qualitative with a content analysis approach. The data was obtained from the speech text and the data were analyzed using Halliday's Theory by considering the data analysis steps proposed by Gay et al. From the results of the analysis, it was found that the realization of the textual metafunction in Hailey Hardcastle's speech was applied. Found 105 clauses in the speech. And in those 105 clauses, there are themes and rhymes that mediate messages to their listeners. So it can be concluded that based on the textual metafunction perspective, the speaker tries to attract the listener's attention to focus more on the message of what is being said, and gives a lot of statements to tell the listener his confession that mental health should be considered the same as physical health and preferably starting at an early age.

Abstract

This study discussed texts and images in Aquaman Movie using a multimodal discourse analysis by Kress and Van Leeuwen's (2006) theory. The objectives of this study are to find out how the texts and images modes are used in the movie and how is the meaning of the text related to the meaning of the image. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The source of data in this study was taken from Aquaman Movie. The data was collected through downloading, reading the dialogue, watching, screenshotting, selecting and coding the data based on the theory Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006). The result found the text and image components are used to know and identify the meaning contained in the Aquaman movie, which aims to provide information to readers and viewers through the modes displayed in the movie. The texts and images mode explain each other’s meaning and show related and non-conflicting meanings so that, can be easily understood by the public. Abstract

This research deals with the meaning of beauty through language metafunctions in cosmetic advertisements. The theory used in this research was the theory of language metafunction by Halliday dan Matthiessen (2004) in their book entitled An Introduction to Functional Grammar. The method applied in this research was a descriptive qualitative method. The data collection methods and techniques used are the listen and note method. First, the researcher listened repeatedly to the utterances conveyed by the advertisement figures and advertisement voice actors. The utterances that have been listened to are then recorded in the data collection sheet on the laptop. The data that has been collected is then presented in the table provided. The table contains data and types of language metafunctions contained in cosmetic advertisements. The data is presented in a table and then analyzed using the theoretical basis of language metafunction by Halliday and Matthiessen (2004). Based on analysis, it was found that the meanings of beauty conveyed through language metafunctions in cosmetic advertisements include smooth and soft skin, thick and beautiful hair, very thick and long hair.

Abstract

This article will show that there are strategies and features present in arguing. This paper explores these aspects applying discourse analysis to the isolated data. The data are in the form of transcripts of arguing taken from the American TV Show Euphoria involving teenage characters with the exception of one adult character. They are then examined using conversational analysis and ethnographical analysis to explore that in addition to the intentions of arguing, background attributes of the conversation such as the participants’ age, region, and relationship with each other can affect the word choice, sentence content, and sentence structure that are utilised in arguing.

Abstract

This research is intended to analyze texts, images, and music in Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy music video on youtube.com using a multimodal discourse analysis by Kress and Leeuwen. The objective of this research is to find out how the texts, images, and music modes are used and integrated meaning among them. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The researcher used a multimodal discourse analysis theory by Kress and Leeuwen (2006) to analyze the texts and the images, and the theory by Leeuwen (1999) to analyze the music. The source of data in this research taken from “Bad Guy” music video by Eilish’s YouTube account, and the secondary data taken from the notation sheet by musicnotes.com. The data were collected through downloading, copying, watching and screenshotting, and identifying the data based on the theory. While the techniques analyzed the data were presenting, describing, interpreting, making data display, and concluding. The researchers found that the selection and use of these modes are not only to create a work that is aesthetic and attractive to the audience but also to convey the message and ideology of the producer and composer through visuals.

Abstract

This research aims to find out multimodal semiotics in Sarimi advertisement. The data were taken from Sarimi ads which published on YouTube. The data then were collected through watching, taking screenshot of visual object, and note-taking techniques. The theory used to analyze the data was multimodal semiotics proposed by Ansety & Bull (2010). Based on the analysis, it was found that Sarimi ads has multimodal semiotics, namely linguistic, visual, spatial, audio, and gestural. Linguistic mode is in the form of declarative sentence. Visual mode comes from two packs of Sarimi noodle. Spatial mode can be seen from the position of Sarimi noodle in front of the advertising characters. Audio mode is from the singing of the advertising characters. Meanwhile, gestural mode refers to the movement of advertising characters while carrying bowl of Sarimi noodle and their expression who enjoy to eat Sarimi noodle.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research focuses on the analysis of English Cohesion applied in student’s writing of sixth grade of Dynata Elementary School located in Denpasar. The aim of the research was to know the language acquisition achievement. The theory used to analyze the achievement is English Cohesion proposed by Halliday (2014). The data were taken from student’s worksheets of sixth grade of Dynata Elementary School. The method used for the research is qualitative, library research by emphasizing syntagmatic and paradigmatic. The result of the research shows that the students are able to use English as communication tool. It can be seen from English cohesion application which is used to cohere the text. Personal reference is the most use in the text, Conjunctions used in the text indicate the chronology of events. Lexical Cohesion is also found in the text. However, grammatical errors are also found in the text. Nevertheless, the errors made by the students are not categorized fatal, but understandable.
