Typography is an element of study in visual communication design related to letter. One of the most uniqueapplications of typography is the combination of letter with sound (onomatopoeia). Typography of onomatopoeiain visual communication design can be found in comic. The font with its own characteristic is combined withthe sound effect and then visualized as a part of text in comic “Tigan Ngasak Batavia†by Bengkel QomikSurakarta. The problem discussed in this research is how the role of typography onomatopoeia in comicanalyzed through sound classification and semiotic approach of Roland Barthes that is denotative andconnotative. The method of qualitative research used includes interview, library study, and document. Theresult of research is that typography onomatopoeia has a function as the story determiner. The dividing ofsound source classification and sound effect in comic is completely spread. Not all of the sound effectpresented in comic “Tigan Ngasak Batavia†shows the original sound. It exactly becomes the attractivenessand stabilization of comedy when the conflict takes place. Typography onomatopoeia in “Tigan NgasakBatavia†has a very important function that is helping audience to hear by eyes. It shows the proof that text incomic has a strong power in conveying messages.Keywords: typography, onomatopoeia, comic, visual communication

The article is the research result about the form of cukli craft in Rungkang Jangkuk, village of Sayang-Sayang, Cakranegara, Mataram City, Nusa Tenggara Barat. The research problems include the existence orthe appearance as well as the development of form in cukli wood craft. A term of cukli means a process ofholing or picking a bit of the wood surface to insert the seashells that is formed in accordance to theornament style wanted. The research uses qualitative method. Interactive analysis is used for data stabilizationand exploration then compared with the related data in accordance to the research aim. Interpretation analysisrefers to the development of the form of cukli craft especially in Rungkang Jangkuk area. The creatingprocess is precisely influenced by internal and external factors. The form of cukli craft has many benefits aswell as function values that meet the buyers’ taste. The product of cukli can be categorized as a craft thathas aesthetic values which uses technique of cukil in the making process. Cukli craft becomes moreinteresting for the actors and lovers of the classical ethnic model that it gets to be an image of Lombokculture and it becomes more developing in its form as well as ornament. The article of “Keberadaan Kerajinan Batik Kayu Krebet†(the existence of Krebet wood batik craft) is theresult of a research to know the existence, various products, and the process of wood batik. The methodused is descriptive qualitative that describes a phenomena. The research uses historical approach while theresearch location is Krebet, Sendangsari village, Pajangan, Bantul Residence. The research problems include:1) how the history of wood batik in Krebet area, and 2) what the various forms of wood batik in Krebet area.The research is supposed to give a description and literature contribution concerning wood batik craft thatbecomes one of the batik arts developments in Indonesia. The result of research shows that the existence ofwood batik craft in Krebet area appears through the impressive history. Before the wood batik craft appears,there have been developing a leather and wood craft in Krebet that is mask and wayang klithik popularized byGunjiar, Kemiskidi and Anton. In 1990s, the wood batik craft in Krebet got the development in coloringtechnique that is batik technique on wood by Windarti. The craft development in Krebet is influenced byinternal as well as external factors among other things are the craftsmen and the agents’ will to support thecraft existence. The wood batik craft has a function as an aesthetic element, practical function, and as toys.The practical function can be changed into aesthetic element because of the aesthetical decorations inbatik.Keywords: craft, wood batik, Krebet

This research aims to learn the correlation between painting activities and psychological needs to the teens.There are two variables in this research covering painting activities as the independent variable and psychologicalneeds as the dependent variable. The correlation technique of Product Moment Pearson is used to know thecorrelation between painting activities and the psychological needs to the teens, while the calculation usesthe computer program SPSS 15 for windows release. Subject of this research is all active students of thePure Fine Arts Department in Institut Seni Indonesia Surakarta. All data that is collected covers 61 subjects.The measuring instrument that is used is the intensity scale of painting activities and the scale of psychologicalneeds. The result of this research shows the coefficient correlation (rxy = 0,746; p = 0.000), it means thatthere is a significant correlation between the painting activities and the psychological needs to the teens.Meanwhile, the determination coefficient of the correlation is R2 is 0,556. It means that the painting activitiesgive the effective contribution to the psychological needs to the teens as much as 55,6 % while the rest of44,6 % is determined by other variables.Keywords: painting activities, psychological needs.

Wayang performance can be used for the sake of ritual ceremony ruwatan. The story of wayang performanceruwatan lakon Sudamala comes from kidung Sudamala. The literature work is sacred. Besides in literaturework, Sudamala story also can be seen visually in the relief sculpture of Candi Sukuh (Central Java) andTegowangi (East Java). The research problem is how the integration of dramatic elements in lakon Sudamalapresented by Ki Purbo Asmoro. The purpose of the discussion is to describe the dramatic elements in lakonSudamala. Lakon Sudamala is researched by using textual approach from the dramatic structure as well asthe treatment elements. Based on the approach, the result found is that the presented structure hasn’t beenas strict as the balungan lakon of the palace tradition even it can be a new treatment presentation. The onenight wayang performance is not anymore treated traditionally but it presents a creative treatment of thescene. It can be seen from ginem that the chosen words is suitable to the characters’ characteristics,pocapan that only uses short words, and the presented janturan that seems to be a kind of janturan alit thatis janturan that its expression is relatively short.Keywords: wayang performance, Sudamala, tekstual, dramatic structure

The article an effort to browse and convey the creativity problem of Nuryanto in creating the Dramatari (dancedrama) Ramayana. It conveys every factor that makes Ramayana interesting so that it becomes the inspirationof various forms of performing arts. It also conveys how the adaptation process of Nuryanto towards Ramayanastory that it becomes a genre of dance drama performing art. The research also describes analytically thecreative process of the creation. The method used is qualitative with historical approach of performing artsand sociology. Ramayana by Nuryanto is created in 1998 started from the concept of dance drama. In pouringhis work, Nuryanto bases on the idioms of Surakarta traditional dance treated by new pattern of treatmentwith double casting concept, multi characters, as well as creative and innovative. The minimalist costumeand the different structure of presentation have made the work strongly exist in every performance. DramatariRamayana by Nuryanto is really an interesting work for it always presents a different treatment and differentcreativity process in every performance since 1998.Key words: Ramayana dance drama, tradition, creativity, genre

Advertising is a tool to convey the information about a thing or goods. Advertising is usually popularizedthrough a media includes electronic as well as printed media like radio, television, or printed advertising.Advertising is supposed to persuade or influence people to use or utilize the things or goods. Advertising isdesigned by sophisticated technology so that it can be easily accessed by public. The research aims to findthe kinds of language styles in the advertisement of the kid formula milk. The milk consumer in Indonesia isvery high. For the reason, then, the agents of advertisement try to make language style designed by picturesand interesting models in order to influence people to choose the milk. The research uses descriptive qualitativemethod. Descriptive research aims to make a systematic, factual, and accurate description about the facts,characteristics, and the relationship between the researched phenomena. Data source in this research usedocumentation technique. The result is the kinds of language styles used in the advertisement of the kidsformula milk including hyperbola, metonymy, personification, and sinekdok. All of the kinds of languagestyles mostly dominate the advertisement in the kid formula milk.Keywords: advertisement, milk, formula, the kids, language style

Teak wood is a natural plant that thrives in Java island. People in Java, historically for a long time, have usedteak wood as the raw material of various buildings, meublelair, and the craft of carving. Teak wood givescontribution to Javanese people not only in economic aspect but also in the social, religious, art, and culturalaspects. The film “Java Teak†is an effort to show discourse of teak wood contribution to Javanese people inorder that teak wood is placed as the important thing in the development of Javanese culture. Indramayu Panji Mask is a mask dance greatly developed in West Java, especially Indramayu. Historically,people in Indramayu, for a long time, have used Indramayu Panji Mask as religious dance, entertainmentdance, and dance for wedding ceremony. The contribution of Indramayu Panji Mask in Indramayu is not onlyas an art aspect but also as social aspect, religious aspect, and the culture itself. Film “Topeng PanjiIndramayu is an important media to contribute Indramayu Panji Mask for people in Indramayu so that panjimask becomes the important part in the development of Indramayu culture.
