Abstract

In the Indonesian context of language learning, at least three languages are dealt with, namely local languages or verna-culars, Indonesian, and at least one foreign language, prin-cipally English. In this multilingual context of language policy, the article is addressed to the issue of how, in such a context, language learning is enhanced in a complementary and mutual fashion. A triadic model incorporating three (meta) languages is exercised, and, by the help and use of the internet and ICT, mutual and complementary recourse to the three languages: vernaculars, Indonesian, and English is encouraged, not only for the sake and success of language learning per se, but also for the benefits of maintaining vernalucars, building stronger (linguistic) nationalism, and mastering the English language.

Abstract

Presenting convincing arguments to defense a standpoint in an argumentative essay was one of the problems of English Department students of UNP. Convincing arguments based on pragma-dialectical framework are those which do not violate any of critical discussion rules. Violations of these rules are known as fallacies. This present study aimed at analyzing types of fallacies mostly made by the students in their argumentative writing. It was expected that by knowing these fallacies, students would pay more attention on the strength of the defense presented, and minimize any weak arguments. It was revealed that violations of critical discussion rules done by the students mostly related to their lack of ability to provide adequate evidences and facts to support their stands.

Abstract

Lately, the strengthening role of English within multilingual societies has led changes which urged teachers to use innovative ways in teaching in order to prepare students to be a better communicator. ICT has been known as potentially powerful enabling tools for creating that innovation. One good example is by using Word to Sentence (WtS) Bingo board integrated with computer to play a game in improving junior high school students’ speaking skills in fluency and accuracy. This game is played by students in groups. Each group has their own board (5x5), two sets of cards (12 nouns and 13 verbs), and a marker. They stick each of the words freely. Then, they have to mark every word mentioned by the computer as the ‘word caller’. To get the score the group is required to create sentences orally as many as they can in two minutes at the time they say ‘BINGO’ whenever the marked words create a line diagonally or vertically or horizontally. Last, they have to compose a short text by using some sentences they have made before. The winner is the group who gets the highest score. The computer is used as the ‘word caller’ in order to help students in giving the model of pronouncing the words correctly and make the game more interesting. Through this way they can practice what they have learned cooperatively so they have more confidence to speak in more relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

Abstract

English language teaching in high schools in Indonesia is carried out based on a nationally compiled curriculum which tends to be standardized and prescriptive – one for all (Widodo, 2016). In reality, the situation in which English is taught and learned is highly complex, due to the interaction of a number of variables, such as political, economic, and geographical factors, as well as the school, the teachers, and the students (Richards, 2002). Therefore, in order to teach successfully, the teacher, as the implementer of the curriculum, needs to interpret this policy creatively in accordance with the situation and context in the field. According to Matsumoto (2009: 160), creativity is “the capacity to produce new art, ideas, techniques, or other products which are useful, aesthetically appealing, meaningful, and correct within a particular field.” In this paper, I will explain the different forms of the teacher’s creativity in teacahing -- the knowledge and skills of the teacher in selecting and applying the appropriate teaching strategies for transforming the lesson (Huizinga, Handlezalts, Nieveen, and Voogt, 2013). In addition to broadening our understanding of the concept of creativity in the teaching of the English language, it is also hoped that this paper will provide input for teachers in the implementation of their pedagogical duties in the field.

Abstract

The gap between digital immigrant teachers and di-qital native students is inevitable. Prohibition o1 using gadgets in the classroom resulted in decreasing students' enthusiasm and participation in classroom activities. Therefore, this research was carried out. It',rvas based on the difficulty that the researcher as a teacher faced in engaging student to reach the targeted outcomes. LINE application was choosen for this investigation since it is applic, gble for smartphones and tablet computers as well as personal computers. The said application is also considered as one of the most frequent social network messengers used by these teenagers students in communicating with each other and it enabled the teacher to fit into students' place. Observation of l7 students has revealed that incorporating LINE was increasing not only the engagement of the students toward learning, but also their language skills. This is because the real-life collaboration existed among the students and the teacher. It was amazing to see how these young digital natives thrived on technology mediated by their gadgets. Meanwhile, the digital immigrant teacher, hardly struggled with adapting it. Although the lack of technology skills of the teacher sometimes slowed down the process of engagement, the teacher still managed to be in line with the students. On the contrary, there was so much temptation in misusing the gadgets for distracting purposes, which also turned out to be another problem to come to grips with. Despite those predicaments, employing LINE indeed worked well for engaging 'gadget-freak' High Intermediate students at LBPP LIA Pekanbaru.
