Abstract

The transformation of former red-light districts into public spaces presents a complex policy challenge because it involves social, economic, and moral dimensions. This article analyzes collaborative governance and social innovation in the transformation of Burnik City in Situbondo Regency using a qualitative approach through interviews, observations, and document analysis. The research findings indicate that cross-actor collaboration functions as a social infrastructure enabling spatial change; however, this collaboration does not occur on equal terms due to the influence of power relations and the roles of key actors. This transformation yields social innovation across three dimensions: meeting social needs, transforming social relations, and community empowerment. Although it has succeeded in shifting stigma and boosting economic activity, the resulting innovations remain partial as they have not yet been strongly institutionalized. Furthermore, spatial transformation also has the potential to create new forms of exclusion for certain groups. Sustainability challenges related to institutional frameworks, participation, and the environment highlight the need for institutional strengthening to ensure that social innovations can endure in the long term.

Abstract

This article reviews Diplomasi Gelombang Korea (Hallyu): Aktor, Media, dan Dampak, analyzing Hallyu as a strategic soft power instrument. The book systematically maps the ecosystem from historical roots to the digital 3.0 era, highlighting the synergy between state and private actors. While offering a comprehensive chronological narrative, this review interrogates its state-centric framework. By integrating “success without design” and non-state agency perspectives, the article challenges the portrayal of the government as an omnipotent architect. Furthermore, it explores the evolving role of fandoms as independent referees and the causal link between exploitative business models and Hallyu’s global competitiveness. Ultimately, it emphasizes the need for a more nuanced understanding of ethical contradictions within contemporary cultural diplomacy.

Abstract

The implementation of digital services through the Smart Kampung website represents a pivotal strategic innovation by the Banyuwangi Regency Government to decentralize and enhance public service delivery. However, the efficacy of these digital interventions is fundamentally contingent upon the website's usability, which directly dictates the quality of user experience (UX) and the overall success of e-government adoption. This research performs an exhaustive usability analysis of the Smart Kampung platform using the ten heuristic principles established by Jakob Nielsen. Employing a descriptive quantitative methodology, the study surveyed 73 active users within the Banyuwangi community using a 20-indicator instrument. The results demonstrate that while the platform excels in aesthetic minimalist design (92% satisfaction) and maintains a strong alignment with real-world conventions (78%), it exhibits significant deficiencies in flexibility and efficiency of use (50% disagreement) and user control and freedom (46% disagreement). These findings suggest a rigid architectural framework that may alienate advanced users and lack intuitive recovery mechanisms. The study recommends the integration of "emergency exits" for erroneous actions and the development of specialized features for expert users to foster a more inclusive and effective digital governance ecosystem
Social Inclusion as a Counter-Radicalism: A Study on Traditional Religious Institution in West Sumatra Muliono

Abstract

This research explores social inclusion as a countering radicalism. The value of social inclusion stems from local community traditions, centered in the surau, and plays a vital role in fostering inclusive behavior. This study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing in-depth interviews and participant observation as data collection techniques. The results indicate that, first, West Sumatra is one of the regions susceptible to radicalism. Second, the traditional value system within surau religious practices serve as an effective medium to counter radicalism due to their inherently inclusive core values. Third, the values of social inclusion are manifested in the mamakiah tradition, which is cultivated among students (santri) within the surau. Surau is more than just a place of worship; it is a traditional religious educational institution and the central hub of the cultural system for the people of West Sumatra. The social inclusion found within the religious tradition of mamakiah underscores a significant value within the context of urban society. This study confirms that social inclusion stemming from local values serves not only as a preventive measure but also as a transformative approach to building moderate awareness. This is essential to counter radicalism, which has evolved alongside socio-political dynamics that have now permeated the field of education
Urban Resilience under Global Pressure: A Political Economy Analysis of the US–China Trade War and Its Impact on MSMEs in Indonesia Alia, Mandra Nur; Pratamasari, Annisa

Abstract

This article examines how the US-China trade war reshapes the resilience of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesian urban economies. While existing studies primarily focus on macroeconomic consequences of global trade rivalry, this study situates MSMEs as socially embedded urban actors operating within spatially uneven market structures, informal economic networks, and localized consumption systems. Using a qualitative political economy approach based on literature review, policy analysis, and illustrative urban evidence from Surabaya and Jakarta, the article analyzes how global supply-chain disruptions, import competition, and financial tightening affect MSME sustainability at the city level. The findings demonstrate that MSMEs function not only as economic units but also as neighborhood-based infrastructures of social resilience that absorb labor displacement, stabilize household income circulation, and maintain local economic continuity under conditions of global uncertainty. However, adaptive capacity varies across urban spaces depending on infrastructure access, institutional support, and market connectivity. The study argues that MSME resilience should be understood as a spatially embedded relational process shaped by interactions between global political economy restructuring and localized social adaptation practices

Abstract

Urbanization, a prehistoric concept, has evolved to encompass various dynamics influenced by technology, population growth, and lifestyle, significantly affecting a community's cultural heritage. The study uses satellite imagery from Google Earth Pro to assess the impact of urbanization on Kaleiçi, Antalya's historic district, revealing an increase in new constructions and loss of green space since 2004. The study used Matlab-based temporal comparison of satellite imagery to analyze the effects of urbanization in Kaleiçi over 20 years. Roland Barthes, a cultural theorist, encouraged architects and planners to combine semiology with urban theory. Barthes' semiotic theory was applied to the study of Antalya's old city, Kaleiçi, indicating that efforts have been made to conserve Kaleiçi, a city of historical and cultural value, despite changes in its meaning, much as Barthes' metaphor of the Argo ship. Over the last two decades, Kaleiçi has seen a slight (5.6280%) increase in new structures, reflecting the authorities' effective balance between expansion and preservation of the area's distinctive semiotic character. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge concerning the consequences of urbanization on cultural assets and provides valuable insights for future conservation programs.
