Abstract

There is notable inadequacy in the amount of Yoruba Language content being offered to learners, which could impede their self-sufficiency. It thus appears that the methods and instructional materials stipulated for Yoruba Language Curriculum are not adequately used to impart knowledge to the pupils. This study, therefore, examined the qualifications of teachers teaching Yoruba Language in lower primary schools in Osun State; assessed the availability and usage of instructional materials in teaching Yoruba Language in the lower primary schools and ascertained the appropriateness of the methods being used as stipulated in the Yoruba Language curriculum in the study area. These were with a view to providing empirical information on the quality of teachers teaching Yoruba Language, the availability as well as usage of instructional materials and the appropriateness of the methods being used at the lower primary schools in Osun State. The study employed a descriptive survey research design. Three research instruments were employed in this study namely Yoruba Language Teachers’ Questionnaire (YLTQ), Yoruba Language Instructional Material Checklist (YLIMC) and Yoruba Language Teaching Method Observation Checklist (YLTMOC). Data collected were analyzed using percentages and frequency counts. The results showed that majority (62.8%) of the Yoruba Language teachers possessed Nigerian Grade II Teachers Certificate and the National Certificate of Education (NCE) as their educational qualifications. The findings of the study also showed that most of the instructional materials that were available in the schools were not adequately used by the teachers teaching Yoruba Language in the study area The study further revealed that methods used in majority of the schools are appropriate as prescribed by the National Policy on Education (2013).Keywords: Yoruba Language; curriculum; lower primary; instructional resources

Abstract

There has been a concern that discipline styles adopted by the teachers may have far reaching effect on the emotions of their learners with its consequences on teaching and learning. This study examined school discipline styles as correlates of learners’ socio-emotional stability in primary schools in Tsafe local government area of Zamfara state Nigeria. Three null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Corelational survey research design was used for the study. The population of the study was 50160 pupils and 841 primary school teachers. The sample size was 400 pupils and 200 teachers using stratified sampling techniques under Yaro Yamane’s formula. The instruments used for data collection were Questionnaire tagged School Discipline Style Questionnaire (SDQ) and Socio-emotional Scale (SeS). The instruments were validated by the experts. The reliability of the instruments was ascertained using Chronbarch alpha which yielded coefficient indexes of 0.6051 and 0.6040 respectively. Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMCC) statistic was used in testing all the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance.  The study revealed that authoritarian and laissez faire styles of discipline are detrimental to socio-emotional stability of pupils in Tasfe LGA, Zamfara state while democratic discipline style promotes socio-emotional stability of pupils in primary schools in Tasfe LGA, Zamfara state. It was recommended that, the school authorities should allocate quality time to both pupils and teachers on discipline as education is more of discipline than academic excellence. And explore the potentials of adult and non-formal education such as workshop, campaign and public talk for the use of democratic style and against authoritarian and laissez faire discipline styles.Keyword: discipline styles; socio-emotional stability; non-formal education

Abstract

The role of the teacher in the teaching-learning process is crucial for facilitating students’ learning.. However, there is a dearth of literature that incorporate socio-economic status such as parental (qualification, occupation, education, income), teachers' factors such as (qualification, work attitude and competence) and gender as they predict students’ academic achievement, particularly in economic concepts within the field of Social Studies. This study therefore investigated socio-economic status, gender and teachers' factors as predictors of students' academic achievement in economic concepts in Social Studies. The study adopted cross-sectional survey research design. Questionnaire was the instrument used to collect data from 350 respondents drawn from five senior secondary schools in Ibadan, Oyo State. Seventy students were selected each from the five schools drawn from Ibadan North local government areas of Oyo state. Data collected were analysed using chi-square and t-test at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the data analysis showed that there is prominent association between socio-economic status and students' academic achievement; there is significant relationship between teachers' factor and students' academic achievement and there is no significant relationship between academic achievement of male and female students in economic concepts in Social Studies. Based on the findings, it was recommended parents should improve the conditions of their home environment to suite the purpose of their children performing better in school work while teachers improve their method of instruction to address various personality traits of students. Keywords: Socio-economic status; Gender; Academic performance; Teacher’s factor

Abstract

The study determined the frequency at which children trafficking and child forced labour activities are being practiced in Osun State, and examined the vulnerability of children trafficked and exposed to forced labour in the study area. In-depth interview was held with 10 senior members of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development (MWACD), Director General, Deputy/Assistant Director General and Confidential Secretary of National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Person (NAPTIP) and One Divisional Police Officer (DPO). For the quantitative data, 240 copies of semi-structured questionnaire were administered to respondents selected through convenience sampling, from 12 locations in the three senatorial districts. Three instruments were used for the study; namely Forced labour Activities Checklist (CLAC) Osun State Child Trafficking and Labour Control Regulation Questionnaire (CLCRQ) for vulnerability indicators and Detection Strata Interview Guide (DS-IG). Also, the Osun State government is making effort to bring about a drastic reduction to the issues such as awareness and time-to-time sensitization. Results on the factors predisposing children into vulnerability Osun State revealed that factors such as poverty (x ̅ =1.30), poor parenting (x ̅ =1.32), ignorance / illiteracy (x ̅ =1.35), and parental economic benefits from the act (x ̅ =1.59) frequently predispose children into vulnerability of child trafficking and forced labour in Osun State.
