Abstract

Literacy leads students to academic success. The power of literacy does not only lie in the person’s ability to read and write, but also in the person’s capacity to apply these skills effectively for connecting, interpreting, and discerning the intricacies of the world. The purpose of this study was to describe various learning activities in grade one Ellipse Class. The study was descriptive, in which the researcher described the phenomena in the setting without attempting to make inferences or causal statements. The study was conducted at Budi Mulia Dua Pandeansari Elementary School in Yogyakarta. The instruments of this study were observation sheets, documentations, and interview protocols. The participants of this study were ten students and two classroom teachers of Ellipse Class. The results show that there are interactive activities which are able to promote students’ literacy development such as reading activities, diary writing, project-based activities, and story writing. Literasi mendorong kesuksesan akademis siswa. Kekuatan literasi tidak hanya terletak pada kemampuan sesesorang untuk membaca dan menulis, tetapi juga terletak pada kemampuan seseorang untuk menggunakan ketrampilan-ketrampilan ini secara efektif untuk menghubungkan, menginterpretasikan, dan mengurai kerumitan dunia. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menggambarkan berbagai kegiatan di kelas yang dilaksanakan di Kelas Satu Ellipse. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif, peneliti mendeskripsikan fenomena di lapangan tanpa berusaha mencampuri fakta yang terjadi di lapangan. Penelitian ini diadakan di SD Budi Mulia Dua Pandeansari Yogyakarta. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan berbagai instrumen diantaranya lembar observasi, dokumentasi, dan pedoman wawancara. Subjek penelitian ini adalah sepuluh siswa kelas satu Kelas Ellipse. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ditemukan berbagai kegiatan interaktif di kelas yang dapat menunjang perkembangan literasi siswa diantaranya kegiatan membaca, menulis buku harian, kegiatan berbasis projek, dan kegiatan menulis cerita.

Abstract

The students at the Second Semester of English Study Program of FKIP-UIR Pekanbaru have problem in reading comprehension. The aim of this research is to find out whether Online Reading Resources has significant effect towards students’ reading comprehension in extensive reading class. The design of the research was experimental research which focused on quantitative approach. The participants of the research were the second semester students of English Study Program of FKIP-UIR Pekanbaru. There are two classes as the samples of this research; experimental group and control group. Each of the group consisted of 31 students. The instruments of this research was reading test. Experimental group was provided with pre-test, treatment, and post-test. Meanwhile control group only given pre-test, and post-test. The finding showed that the mean score in pre- test was 57.25 and post test was 78.07, the improvement was 20.8 for experimental group. Meanwhile for control group in pre-test, the students got the mean score 58.07, and in post-test got 64.67, improvement was 6.61. It could be stated that there is significant effect of online reading resources after getting treatment. In calculation of analysis tt (t table) on the level of significant 5% found 0.361, and to was 7.1. It could be seen a comparison was 7.1>0.361or (to>tt). It means that the null hypothesis is rejected and alternative hypothesis is accepted. It can be stated there is a significant effect of students’ reading comprehension in extensive reading class after using online reading resource in teaching and learning reading at the second semester of English Study program FKIP-UIR Pekanbaru.

Abstract

Teaching English productive skills was considered to become the most difficult lesson, the students needed to have good pronunciation, master structure, discourse and the social context of cultural competence. Besides, speaking and writing were difficult, more effort was required on the part of the students and lecturers. It was not enough for the students to listen only. This research tried to explore the strategies used by the lecturers and their influences in developing students’ cognitive academic language proficiency by working on students’ English productive skills. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. It consisted of only one variable, which the researcher wanted to explore the description of strategies used by the lecturers and their influences on students’ English productive skills at English study program of FKIP UIR. In this research, researcher only focused on exploring the strategies used by the lecturers and describing the influences from those strategies on students’ English productive skills. The result of this research showed that there were some strategies used by lecturers in teaching English productive skills at English study program of FKIP UIR, they were: (1) in the speaking classroom; Buzz group, think-pair-share, circle of voices, video recording method. (2) in the Writing classroom; collaborative writing technique. All of those strategies were suitable for teaching speaking or writing and gave description for reader to increase students’ English productive skills.

Abstract

Field-based learning has long been used by teachers to enhance students learning. Futher, Field trips are recognized as important moments in learning; a shared social experience that provides the opportunity for students to encounter and explore novel things in an authentic setting. The need to develop an effective environmental education program ranks as one of the major challenges facing education in the next decade. This paper is focused on analyzing the effectiveness of field trips strategy on students’ writing descriptive text for a group of 30 students of second semester of FKIP UIR Pekanbaru in academic year 2016/2017 who were selected by using random sampling. The data were collected by giving test (pre-test and post-test) This study used experimental reseacrch, used by the Mann-Whitney U t-test. The normality of the test was analysed through Kolmogorov-Smirnova..The instruments used in this study were lesson plans and writing descriptive text tests. Regarding the data analysis, mean, percentage and Mann-Whitney U test scores for the dependent sample were employed. The result of statistc indicated that the asymptotic significance of less than 0.05 (p = 0.00 < 0.05). it means the students’ ability in writing descriptive text increased significantly after learning with fild trip strategy.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know the teaching and learning activity in implementing the 2013 curriculum. This research is based on a preliminary study of the implementation of the 2013 curriculum in some junior high schools around Pekanbaru by observing and interviewing English teachers. This research is qualitative. Researcher use observation sheet and interview to know the learning activities in SMP Negeri 23 Pekanbaru. Based on the research findings, first, the stage of teaching and learning process in the classroom, the teacher has not been able to carry out the ideal teaching step; second, professionally, the curriculum implementer has not received training from the government to support the teaching and learning process in the classroom and the last available resources and media Not yet supported. By doing this research, researchers hope that the government does the right training for all English teachers in applying the 2013 curriculum.

Abstract

Various studies on teaching and learning reading in Indonesia have been conducted. In order to know the strengths and the weaknesses of the studies, a thorough study is needed to be conducted. This article is based on a critical analysis on teaching and learning reading in Indonesia for a study “a Case Study on Two Indonesian Learners’ Extensive Reading in English Experiences towards Developing Reading Competency”. It aimed to answer: (1) What were the strengths and the weaknesses of the studies on teaching and learning reading in 2003 to 2013? (2) How were the studies similar and/ or different from the current study”? The critical analysis was conducted by studying twenty articles from 2003 until 2013. The studies were analyzed critically in terms of the strengths and the weaknesses. The findings of the analysis are; (1) The strengths of the studies on teaching and learning reading in 2003 to 2013 were in terms of the topic of the studies indicating that learning English in Indonesian context and the studies on extensive reading were developed gradually. The weaknesses were in terms of the focus of extensive reading and the variation of the research design. (2) The studies were similar with the current study in terms of the concept of extensive reading and the research design. This condition might be considered as an opportunity for the following researchers to conduct a research about learners’ experiences on extensive reading. It is suggested that that teachers, lecturers and the policy makers on language learning concern about how extensive reading is implemented.

Abstract

Abstract Motivation is an important thing in the classroom to make the learning runs well. By having good motivation, students will give more efforts to achieve their desired goal for example getting a good score. There are some factors influence students’ motivation. Two of them are learning style and reading strategy use. Brown defines learning styles as the way in which someone’s perceive the information or knowledge in learning situation. It has to do with someone’s characteristic in learning. It can be visual, auditory, kinesthetic or etc. The learning style which belongs to someone can be different from one to each another. The way someone (student) in learning, might also have particular strategy that influence motivation especially in learning English. The students who are aware of applying language learning strategies will get a helpful way in learning the language. Learning strategies are specific actions taken by the learner to make learning easier, faster, more enjoyable, more self directed, more effective, and more transferable to new situations. In order to improve students’ motivation, pertinent questions about students’ learning styles and language learning strategy in learning English need to be addressed. The research was conducted in STIBA Persada Bunda. The instrument used in this research was Questionnaire. Based on the results, all of Alternative hypotheses were accepted. First hypothesis, there was a significant correlation between learning styles and students’ motivation in learning English. Second hypothesis, there was a significant correlation between language learning strategies and students’ motivation in learning English. And the third hypothesis, language learning strategy gave more influence than learning styles

Abstract

This study investigates the correlative aspects among three variables; reading interest, guessing words meaning in context mastery, and reading comprehension. It comes up in analyzing the theories and results of some studies that reading interest and guessing words meaning in context mastery would or would not contribute to reading comprehension. It indicates this concern is being confered now on. To achieve this purpose, it is designed as correlational study, where it took the fourth semester students English Study Program of FKIP- Islamic University of Indragiri as sample. Two kinds of instrumentations were utilized; questionnaire and tests. While analyzing the data, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment statistical analysis. Its findings reveal that the correlation coefficient was rxy=0.817, which was categorized as high correlation. Hypothesis testing aslo determined that critical value of rxy was greater than critical value of ttable in significant level 5% (0.817>0.374). It was evidently proven that there was a positive correlation among the students’ reading interest and guessing words meaning in context mastery toward reading comprehension. Then the determination coefficent is 0.667, which means the students’ reading interest and guessing words meaning in context mastery contribute 66.7% toward reading comprehension. It infers that who wants to have better in reading should have better in reading interest and guessing words meaning in contexts mastery.

Abstract

The main goal of the study was to investigate the effect of using educational multimedia in dictation on students’ listening comprehension at MA Darul Hikmah Pekanbaru. This was a quasi-experimental research which involved control class and experimental class. The population of the study was 175 and the sample was 52. The instrument of the study had been tested its validity and reliability by conducting try-out test two times. The instrument was given in control class and experimental class before and after giving treatments. The treatments were only given to experimental class meanwhile in control class remained using the conventional teaching technique. The data were analyzed by using indipendent sample t-test and paired sample t-test then the effect size and improvement were calculted. The result of the study shows that both control class and experimental class had improvement of their listening comprehension. But, the improvement of experimental class was much higher that control class was. The improvement of listening comprehension in experimental class was 43,2% but in control class was only 11,5%. In short, it can be concluded that the using of educational multimedia in dictation provely could improve students’ listening comprehension.

Abstract

Being able to read in English is very important. Success in reading is the most necessary because it is a basic tool of education. Based on the syllabus of Islamic Senior high School Hidayatul Mubtadiin (MAHM), it is hoped that students should comprehend monolog texts in narrative, spoof and hortatory exposition forms well. After doing preliminary observation at MAHM, some of the students of the second year still had low ability in their reading comprehension. The dominant factors influencing their low reading comprehension are the lack of vocabulary and teaching strategy of reading comprehension. From the two of dominant factors, the researcher is interested to investigate about teaching reading comprehension. Thus, the researcher conducted a research on the effect of Multipass strategy on Reading comprehension. This research investigates students’ reading comprehension taught by using multipass strategy at MAHM Siak Sri Inderapura. The design of this study was Quasi-experimental research by post-test only. The subject of this research was the second year students of MAHM. The total population was 42 students, and the sample was 42 students. Data were collected by using a test. Then, the data were analyzed by using t-test formula. It was found that there was a significant effect of using multi pass strategy on students’ reading comprehension at MAHM.
